It's interesting that several GSD breeders/trainers have told me that desexing a male GSD only reduces male to male dog aggression in the presence of a bitch in season and otherwise has no effect. They have also mentioned that male GSD's of hard nerve and stranger aggressive when desexed have become skittish and handler aggressive/fear biters with unpredictability???. That may be, dog to dog individually but I highly doubt this across an entire breed. Any entire breed.

Maybe the dog was being chatty? Some dogs "grumble" yodel growl" for attention. It might not be aggression at all. She is lucky her dog didn't react to her smacking it's face. I have had the pleasure of looking after a couple of very aggressive (human/animal) dogs both desexed. So i am not a big believer in desexing equating quick fix.

Things can only change when we accept the problem and fix it. Great article. -

Supercoat Puppy Vs Bonnie Puppy
arawnhaus replied to ButerflyGirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
This sums it up for me,though I give meat and other.Tried the major premium foods and didn't see any improvement or difference other then price.Science diet did produce wonderful teeny tiny stools though. Bonnie is definitely my preferred choice. -
I only wash mine if they look/smell like they need it.No unnecessary bathing here.

Where Can I Buy A Good Leather Muzzle?
arawnhaus replied to jesomil's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Schweikert, Leather basket weave muzzle would be an idea, they make quality items. However, it is a bit steep if you require a "just in case muzzle".. -
I have thought about using it, haven't got around to it as yet but will definitely get some one day. ATM I have a product called sprint oil, it is pretty good for coats etc my dogs haven't gained extra weight from it but I have heard it being used for that before. Might get some today.

So sorry to read this Pandii. I feel for you and your children, he will be watching over you still, just from a different place.

I have used both products on dogs who had it Introduced at a young age,no problems whatsoever.I prefer goats milk but give cow as well.

I fed my dogs the Bonnie working dog for a long time and they did well on it, but the formula seemed to change and it wasn't as good. At six months of age I wouldn't worry about feeding her the working dog; many large breed dogs are better off with the adult formulas even as small puppies. Currently I'm feeding my dogs the Ecopet dry food which; $34 for 10 kilos, so probably more at the expensive end. I've also fed the Supercoat working dog, which is a decent food, but seems increasingly difficult to find at feed stores. I only found out the other day, they made a dry.Must try it some day.

If you're feeding tuna, sardines etc they'll get Omega 3s from the fish. Vegetable oil is a good source of energy and fat which many dogs require more of during colder weather to maintain body weight. And Woofbix is as good as any other of the cheaper dry foods, better than most in fact. Also good are the You'll Love Coles Dry Food (Chicken and Rice for preference) and the Woolworths Select Dry Food. But I'm another sworn Great Barko/Uncle Albers devotee. Dogs do great on it (some of them TOO great) and very rarely do they turn their noses up. Coats are shiny and no great difference in stool production that I'm aware of. Me too. I find one of mine gets a bit heavy on it so I change now and again to Bonnie working.Mine are also rmb's fed with other stuff.

Do You Feed At The Same Time Every Day?
arawnhaus replied to Winterpaws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
me too. -
Take her out to explore as much as you can, but carry her and park close by so you can go for little adventures and not be walking far. For the purposes of socialisation she should be out from 8 weeks old, but with caution and you carrying her or just sitting down at a bench with her next to you. Everybody has a opinion on when is too early/late for young puppies to get out and see the world but with what you have done, she sounds just fine from it, so cut out the 3 km walks please and carry or sit quitely and let her observe her new surroundings from a picnic bench. She is looking Beautiful and Loved by her photos! Thanks for the update! I am glad you are not frightenend off dol by everybody's opinions I guess that is bound to happen with all the people here! Best of Luck.. ETA Remember her outside time is for showing her the world not exercise.

Great to watch and learn from.Awesome. -
Okay I understand now,you bought her sight unseen fair enough. I highly recommend she get to a vet, you see she could need assistance with whelping and currently she may not be strong enough mentally/physically with the demands of raising a litter. She will also need her offspring taken care of and checked at birth, how can this be done if you cannot even get to"capture" her? I would carefully consider if this bitch should whelp at all given she is fragile. She could be in the very beginning of her pregnancy therefore not too late to abort. The vet will be able to advise after they see her.Lure her to you via food and loop the lead around her neck. Please get help. On a side note here, you know she will transfer these negative behaviours towards people in her litter, then you will have numerous fragile dogs on your hands.I don't think that is something you want. All her pup's will see, is a worried mother and naturally they will learn to fear humans. Please seek out a vet.
-
Tricky situation to be in if she is pregnant. She needs security and good food for her and the potential litter she has growing inside of her.She needs to get to a vet ASAP for a check up and diagnosis on roughly when she is due and so forth. Can you raise a litter? Keep feeding her and plenty of fluids, she needs attention, how could you take her home given she is this nervy? Please get her to a vet.

I like Rottis -- I rent to a rotti breeder and have a few Rottis as regulars in my kennels. But there is no question that the breed makes a good guard dog or shutzhound. And there's no question that a Rotti who is managed or trained in a way that brings out the protective instincts of the dog can be a danger. Also no question that people -- and security firms and police squads -- who want a big, frightening guard dog are likely to choose a Rotti. People who prefer the macho image are likely to look for a tough Rotti to put over their tough bitch, and there are some dubious animals out there who carry the dominant black and tan from Rotti in their bloodlines. There isn't an easy answer to this problem. I applaud the Rotti breeders who are aware of the problem and are careful with pup placement and emphatic on the need for training. . . . and careful not to allow their boys to be used by irresponsible BYBs. I hope they can uphold their breed's reputation well enough to avoid BSL. But it will take work. On the other hand, I had a Rotti break control from its owner, cross the street, and attack my dog (female Labrador) and impart some bad punctures. This happened in Germany, the dog was a slim but muscular farm dog and the woman walking it was a bit frail (weight ratios can be pretty meaningless). I think the public should be protected against such dogs, and understand why some politicians use breed as a handle for legislation. The best answer is not to give them the excuse. Denying the problem because your Rotti is a sook -- and most of them are -- is not going to make the problem go away. Excellent post.
