  1. We had a chocolate guide dog puppy attend some of our puppy preschool classes. I had a look at this breeder's website. They're amazingly seal-like dogs - would be a little more interesting seeing them if they weren't carrying so much weight. And "rare short thick otter tail" (my bolding) is bewildering. Well there you go last I heard they werent using chocolates as they were just too happy go crazy labs.. *groan* god some people will tell you anything to sell a dog..
  2. I never expected to see such a controversial statement on this board. However, you express my views perfectly. Yes +1! You have my breed down pat as far as i am concerned  Apart from a few select breeders who dare to stay true to the standard the only place you find a decent dog these days is "byb". Its funny the range of practices here that are considered byb. So you can health test, be registered with ANKC but if the litter aint reg you are still a byb? I would take that any day over all these puppy farms that are being discovered First "byb good for nothing mongrel" shepherd died of old age at 15. Damn her non registered breeders for selling us a healthy and long lived family member  I really don't understand this point of view. The problem is that there are not just "a few" people doing this. It is rife. The fact is BYB will never stop. I don't think anyone disputes that but make it more socially unacceptable and minimise it as much as possible. I only have mutts, probably always will but I sure as hell would not be lining the pockets of a BYB or puppy farm for them and I certainly don't think anyone should be worried about a shortage of BYB mutts anytime soon. I agree, there are alot of byb, i only know a handful of doggy friends who have actually bought from registered breeders. The rest have been purchased from the pound or unregisetered, hence byb dogs. I guess for me personally, it is more the fact that i have had bad experiences with club with my breed and don't agree with what most reg breeders in my breed are doing. hence i find a breeder who still does health tests ect but does not show hence they are unregisted. This is how i find a dog that i believe is true to my breed. You see the thing is, i think public perception must change for byb to be seen by many as socially unacceptable. The attitude of most ppl i know is that pedigree dogs are overpriced and when you only want the dog as a family pet and not showing/breeding then the papers are not worth much to these ppl. I think it is also still a common point of view(dispite the good efforts of breeders) that the more pedigreed a dog is the more health problems they may have. So when they can pay in some cases $1000 dollars less they will, as many simply cannot afford 1500+ for the breed they want. I am not saying this is personally what i think, it is the thinking tho of my little group at our daily hangout  Just curious, if you have mutts where did they come from? The pound? Where did they come from before that? Most reg breeders will not breed mutts. Edit: To say, very sorry, thought you were replying to me. So sorry if you were not as you got my opinion instead  I agree to this.. I had a friend posting on facebook about looking for breeders of particular breeds.. she then said later on in comments oh I cant afford $1500+ theres a "breeder" at ----- who sells them for $550.. Breeder my ass, I linked her to here explaining the difference between her "breeder" and a real breeder, she found one she likes but I have a feeling she will go back to the cheap one simply because its cheap... Lets face it there really is NO money in breeding dogs at all and yet breeders seem to charge a phenominmal amount for a dog.. mostly to me it comes across as making a profit but correct me if Im wrong.. but what are we looking at cost wise if your bitch has a healthy pregnancy - food, worming, vaccine, microchip if you add that all up and divde by the number of pups surely even if you say added $100 each for your time if doesnt work out at $1200 a pup .. Just my thoughts but as I said correct me if Im wrong, I havent bred a litter before and Im only new to the show world so Im learning alot as I go Im all for purebreds and showline and everything.. Im looking into finally getting my own show puppy but I would say thats the thing that bogs me down the most is the cost of the dog.. You get what you pay for and thats fine... but the average family mum,dad and a few kids I dont think can understand why they pay that money when as pointed out they can go to a petshop or local newspaper or whatever and pay next to nix for a pup of quiet possibly the same kinda quality as a pedigreed purebred... I dunno just my thoughts here..
  3. Yep black too can bleach we have seen it in the poodles, they can go a greyish kinda colour..Okay here we are we have the timeline of the coat colour picture 1 was Jan 2011 about a month after I got him, pic 2 was march 2011 theres already a difference, and then the final pic was in full show condition in may of 2011 - we won a neuter in group that weekend :D You can now see why they are a PITA to show and keep in coat mind you I was only a novice showie and he was my first attempt at showing anything!! but in all the time in the ring with him there was only one other chocolate lab and that was his cousin or something.. when we didn grafton in may which was 6 shows in 4 days there were heaps of labs but he was the only neuter and the only chocolate all weekend
  4. Does sound steep 8 months not weeks?? Chocolate isn't 'rare' persae, is it? Age shouldn't matter, $3500 for a Lab is ridiculous! $1000-$1200 I would think Chocolate is about as rare as blue staffords, they're not popular in the show ring, so they don't tend to get bred for that reason, but then they became the craze That's phenomenal.. I know the main registered lab who was chocolate who I was showing was $900 or so.. Chocolates aren't rare at all these days but your right they don't show as well as they are a PITA to keep in condition due to their colour sun bleaching.. It took me many months of conditioning to get him back to condition to hit the ring and even then he still looked strange. Next to a younger. Chocolate who had been Uv protected his whole life... To me there is a genetic marker with this colour they tend to be more so crazy then your average lab.. As discussed there is a reason why guide dogs don't have them in the mix.. I loved the boy I was showing but never again would I go chocolate.. I'd be curious to hear this pups breeding if it's a "big named" lab breeder the people might think they could warrant more charging for it Oh that's really interesting Smisch, I had no idea about the sun bleaching! Don't suppose you or anyone has any photos of a lab with it?? You have my Facebook.. I'll link a pic here when I get on my pc but there are a few photos in flab and friends and he is a really pasty colour I'm talking like orangey-creamy brown

  6. I was gonna say my OH is a registered microchipper and we've done several litters of less then 12 weeks cos at 12 weeks generally the breeders have sent them off home.. I think the last litter we did was about 6/7 weeks of age..
  7. :D my brag for today!! Ella did her first agility class :) omg she was awesome 6 weave poles yay!! We have only just started weaves and have 12 done at a basic level so I was stoked!! And she also confidently ran 4 small sequences :) just so thrilled with her!! She's been working so well at home so this made my day.. And we didn't run off once which was even better!! Yay Ella
  8. OOOOh, I hope I get a chance to take photos of the lowchen. I try to get photos of as many unusual breeds doing agility as possible. And I agree with the bit about the fun. Cheers, For sure if you can get some good ones we'll be buying copies for her DOL profile as we are trying to portray the multi talented lowchen.. Which she very much is, just one quality we really want to get out there when we breed her is they're more then a pretty face lol, very much a family dog and a dog who wants to learn and do things with you as this little miss has shown me lol currently learning her weave poles.. We have a unique style but hey we're getting it lol :)
  9. You only need to register with dogs qld if you intend on doing something with the dog - showing, Agility, flyball ect. Good luck with the puppy and let us know how it all goes
  10. Thanks heaps :) got a week till I'm back at work so we shall see what we put together
  11. You won't be the only one I have the lowchen coming out who just goes from one mood to the next if I keep her in a ring I will be surprised lol.. Running her in march so I get a starting point.. I think the whole week is just gonna be a fun one of team smisch
  12. Would love to meet Denver, the next workshop is on Feb 5 before the Feb 26 trial. Be very wary of Tilba though she is such a naughty dog at dwd. Oooh we'res it at?? I have a trial the night before so I may not be up to it.. and wheres the trial at and how do I enter?? I havent been able to find anything for it and It gives me something to aim for with him he has a few simple lines.. so we'll see how we go worst that happens we pull LOL
  13. I would tend to maybe go an older bc, my boy is what appears to be a show x working and he has no end to his energy and is very bouncy even at 4.. An ex show dog or even one who didn't make the grade - too small, too big ect would be good they have been well socialized and for the most part reasonably calm as they are used to being crated and examined and all that jazz and they're over the puppy stage as well.. Just my thoughts :)
  14. Now you Guys have started something evil den has a few tricks that I can string together and now I'm going to teach him a few more lol so we can have a routine!!! God help us lol we may actually get entered for a DWD comp this year ETA: Found the first DWD comp for NSW.. dammit it clashes with agility but at the same grounds so lookss like we'll be multitasking have all hands on deck that day to keep dogs running and dancing lol.. I have a goal lets keep to it
  15. The k9 pro ones are run by Vickie here on DOL if I'm correct :) you won't get anyone better IMO she is a fantastic trainer and awesome competitor known her for many years she started me out on this sport lol :) oh well if we come up this weekend I'll come find you and say hi were out of the ring until we have something to show lol so waiting on pups to be born And. Breeders to contact us.. :) good luck and enjoy
  16. I have one up until now has worked great I just have a hatchback and the dogs travel in the boot due to crates. Only current issue is one side seems to be loosing and not holding in place but I'm yet to take a good look. Mines held up against a 30kg lab so I'm haPpy got sick of him bailing into the back seat when he was buckled in the boot
  17. I guess to me just making sure she is fit and generally healthy I would say your vet would have picked up on anything major such as heart and eyes and ears when you took her in for vaccines. Just making sure she isn't over weight or anything like that as that's not good on her joints. But apart from that sounding like a go :) where abouts are you? Have you found a club yet there's so many great clubs and people in nsw :) hopefully well see you out there one of these days. My little lowchen just got her championship title so she's following in the border collies footsteps and doing agility lol she thinks she is a border collie lol!! Good luck :)
  18. Leema that was. Never my intentions I just merely responded to a prior remark made in this topic as I said impatient me.
  19. Already on it :) just sent a nice email acknowledging that I got the email and look forward to hearing from the breeder soon..
  20. I dont mind that I appreciated the breeder sending me an email to acknowledge my email had been recieved but giving me a time frame means I am now anxiously awaiting and expecting a response, thats just me though LOL impatient is me
  21. Im pretty sure if its westielover with the kelpie flynn your talking about shes on holidays atm or according to her facebook posts she is.. If you need me to get onto her I have her on FB so just drop me a pm and Ill see what I can do :)
  22. Yep Im at that stage, emailed 2 breeders and rang a rescue. Left a simple message for the rescue about which dog I was ringing about and my name and contact number as instructed on the voice mail and nothing.. not even a polite call to say sorry the dog has been adopted was there anyone else you were interested in. The first breeder nothing... and the 2nd breeder I got an email the following night to apologize not answering my email sooner as she was busy and that she would get back to me the following day answering my questions.. so we're 3 days later then that and still nothing.. just bummed out at this stage, I dont wanna ring people as to me calling is a really eager think and shows a YES I WANT kind of effect and I dont wanna seem pushy as at this stage Im still deciding based on a number of things including the response I get from the breeder.. so Im gonna sit in my bubble and wait
  23. Isn't it 10 cockers at the moment??? Ummm yep .. I want to get a t-shirt that says 'I suffer from MSS.. Multiple Spaniel Syndrome' Hahahahah good on ya Holly!!!
