He should be ok. Just make sure someone is home with him just in case he vomits it back up. Probably best to feed smaller necks or mash them up until he learns to eat them properly.

Nutro has a normal puppy and a large breed puppy food. Normal puppy with chicken or lamb and rice has 26% protien and the large breed puppy with chicken has 28% protein and large breed puppy with lamb and rice has 27% protien. Thanks for that Norskgra

Does anybody know how much protein is in Nutro Puppy? Do they just have the 1 puppy formula or is there also another one particularly for large breeds? Am tossing up whether to raise my next litter on Nutro or Eagle Pack Large breed, which i have been happy with and it's only around 23% protein.

My girl recently had a hot spot. I initially cut the hair around the spot, bathed it in malaseb and applied betadine for the first 2 days. Then i tried Apple Cider vinegar ..... didn't improve, but certainly didn't get inflamed/infected. After that, i used Lucas' Pawpaw ointment which completely cleared it up within around 8 days. Have heard that Curash is really good as well.

Same here - while I do have a vet that is only 5 minutes from my door step (Monash is a good 45 minutes away in off peak traffic) which I use for vaccinations and less serious stuff such as nicks and scrapes - I use Monash for the more serious stuff. They make you feel so at ease and take the time to explain things clearly. They also dont give you "worst case scenario is the only scenario" opinions when looking over your pet like my local vet does. Ray Ferguson and Mark Fowley are fantastic and I couldnt recommend them highly enough. I've now seen all the vets at Monash at one time or another and i think they're all just wonderful. I go to Ray with any difficult problems, but certainly have lots of faith in all the others as well.

I've had to take my young Golden to the Hallam after-hour vets several times and found them to be fantastic with emergency situations

Feeding A Overweight Golden Retriever
goldielover replied to animallover12's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
He is overweight, but he's also quite a big boy by the look of the pics. I'd ditch the mince and just give him dry and some bones (not anything too fatty) -
I recently used ACV on my goldens hotspot. It didn't heal it, but it did stop it from becoming inflamed and infected, which is the main problem. I then used Lucas' Paw paw ointment and it has now completely healed.

Ditto, can not agree with Miranda enough and not only Ray who is increasingly in greater demand and at the same time decreasing his hours but also the other vets at this clinic. Michael Bell at Craigieburn VC is also excellent if that is better situated for you. Ditto again. I live in Narre Warren and Monash is around 20 to 25 minutes from me and i wouldn't go anywhere else. I've seen Ray for repro problems with my girl and i think i've seen almost all of the other vets there and i can't recommend them highly enough. I just got my girls vaccinated there. The first is $73 and then decreased for each additional dog. They do a very thorogh examination as well.

Poor Connor . Sending lots of pawsitive thoughts you way ad good luck at the vets!

Oh my god, marcosmom... i'm very sorry to hear about your puppy. That's just awful

More than likely the puppy will grow out of it. However, i would have something in writing from the breeder as to what you have agreed on. I have bred a puppy that had what turned out to be an innocent murmur (detected at 3 weeks and then gone at 6 weeks already), and i removed the pup from sale at the time, and would have kept her here until i knew what the problem was had the murmur continued. I guess i'm trying to say that i would be wary of forking out $900 without some sort of written assurance from the breeder that you will be able to return the puppy or get some sort of compensation/discount should the murmur continue.

oohhh, what a cutie! I agree with the others, we NEEED more pics!

I've recently switched from EP Natural to Eagle Pack Holistic and am very happy with the results. I also feed a bit of raw as well... chicken necks, meaty bones, raw mince, yoghurt, cottage cheese, sardines in oil and the odd egg. I do add a couple of things at times, such as Kelp, Omega blend and Apple Cider Vinegar.
-
I've noticed the same with Supercoat... mountains of poo and smelly farts! . Also, smellier coats as well. I've recently tried Optimum and still a lot more poo than EP.

If you're going to get into the nitty gritty, I'd look at scores a few generations back and not just the sire/dam and great sire/dam, but also their other offspring and their siblings. This can take quite a bit of research. If there is an on-line database of the breed you're interested in, that may be a start as most will have a vertical pedigree option as well. There may not be all of the scores, but then at least you can ask around.

I'm not 100% sure, but i remember reading that Optimum is made by the same people who make PAL? I have a bag of it here and i started to mix it in with their Eagle Pack until i realised that the size of their poo's had quadrupled and were no longer firm. I also did some costings and because i would have to feed twice as much Optimum as i would EP for the same size breed/size of dog, there is very little cost saving. However, i can't really say how my girls did on it as i had only just started to mix it in.

What's Happened To Eaglepack In Australia?

Yep, i had an email along the same lines as the above post by InspectorRex. I have enough for around 2 months or so, so hopefully it will be available by then. -

Thanks for the PM Amba. Have also emailed you. Definitely agree with Inspector Rex - my girls do so well on EP and hoping that it reaches our stores soon! -

That's also my concern InspectorRex. One of my girls will be mated soon and i wouldn't like to change her diet. Also a shame that i more than likely won't be able to raise the pups on EP either. Not a lot of point if puppy people won't be able to buy it either. Do they not have any smaller bags of the one you bought? Until they get more in? I'd look for a place that sells it online, or maybe switch to another easier to obtain super premium food like Nutro or Natural Balance. Not sure who sells Nutro in your area, but priceless pets sell Natural Balance on their website - make sure in "special instructions" you ask for the Puppy Blend one though for your girl in whelp. -WithEverythingIAm They didn't have a lot of smaller bags either, but will check it out again today when i return the large bag. I've thought about Natural Balance as well, so that's an option. I haven't seen Nutro around here yet, but will keep my eyes open. -

This was the Lamb and Rice, and it was full price. I've decided to just take it back and i'll have to find something else to feed the girls, which will mean changing their diet abruptly as i only have around 2 days worth of EP left -

I've just come from my local PetStock at Cranbourne in VIC, and there are only about 4 large bags of EP there (all different holistic varieties). I've checked a few other stockists around here and they're all in the same boat. PetStock said that they're not expecting another shipment for 2 months. Apparently it's sitting on the wharves (which is a problem EP have had in the past). It's very disappointing. I've had to fork out $116 for a 15kg bag which is 3 months past it's use-by date (yep, i tried for a discount!). I've emailed the Victorian rep, so i'll let everyone know if i get a response. -
I teach young puppies to eat them by holding one end of them for a few weeks until they've got the hang of it. Might be more difficult with an older pup or an adult dog... greater risk of getting your fingers bitten off LOL
