  5. LOVELY puppy. . . . would love to know the bloodlines (as with Nekhbet). . . . sigh - guess I will just have to admire him as he is :D Cairo1
  6. Believe it or not, that image was taken in broad daylight!! I edited it in Lightroom and simply shot the sliders from side to side and this is the outcome!! Sometimes it pays to get radical :D
  7. I had some fun last weekend with my Canon 7D. I also had some fun playing with the sliders in Lightroom!! That is how I go the Silhouette image of Banzai (the black GSD). I also liked the one of Imba shaking. . . . Anyway, enjoy! :D Cairo1
  8. Hmmmm, one year old entire male. . . . . Firstly, unless you are intending to show and breed, I would desex him. He obviously has some herbs about him and it is really important to prevent the behaviour from continuing. Each time he succeeds in these behaviours, the harder it becomes to extinguish them. I believe that he needs more spacial management in that he should not be allowed to go where he wants and when he wants. When he is out and about, supervise! If you can't supervise him, feel free to crate him or put him away in a pen. I would also be much more vigilant in his behaviour in relation to the cats. From now on that should be a no go zone. I also believe that he needs some obedience training so that he is more respectful of you. Your leadership skills may also need a shake up ;) Monday; buy a crate (if you don't already have one) and a book on clicker training Tuesday; desex him and while he is at the vet, clean the areas where he has urinated with a vinegar-based solution (not ammonia-based) Wednesday; begin his training program and ensure that he is either supervised or crated/penned Thursday; re-introduce him to your cat, reward appropriate behaviour and give him time out for bad behaviour Friday; read up on 'Nothing In Life is Free' and think about how you could use it in relation to your dog Saturday; log on to your local dog training club's website and read up on your requirements and on Sunday; join up!!! and then practice, practice, practice :D Does this help? Cheerio Cairo1

  10. Sujo, are you SURE you can't have one of each?? You could save a greyhound AND have a whippet. ;) I love sighthounds (used to have borzoi) but now have GSDs. A LOT more work and not quite the gentle nature that sighthounds have. . . . . I do miss them. i don't envy you your choice. . . it's a hard one!! Good Luck Cairo1
  11. Well a month or so back I saw the most amazing dog friendly house ever!! Sadly it was a new house because these breeders had theirs burnt down in the recent bush fires in Victoria (St Andrews). Anyway, the features that really appealed to me was that the kitchen, which was at one end of the house, had a large granite counter which divided the kitchen/grooming and whelping room. At one end was a 'stable door' ie a half door into grooming room and underneath the counter were three 'bays' where you could put XL soft crates to put dogs in after grooming or just to 'be with you' when you were in the kitchen. The kitchen also had large windows into the grooming room. The other thing these folk had done was go to second hand sales and bought an enormous mirror so that they could groom in front of it!! It would have been at least 5' x 6'. These people had Airdales and they were really well set up. So my advice would to think about where you could conceal crates (if you are a crating person) and make them a built in facility. Cheerio Cairo1
  12. ;) I wouldn't dare suggest you get another one but I do dare to suggest you can make them REALLY easily!! I bought some bridle leather 6ft lengths and made four for my borzoi. Your local leather suppliers should also be able to supply the clips. I still have mine and they are now nearly 15 years old - I love them, they are soft and pliable. The fancy 'plait' is also easy to do!! I worked it out from another lead and I would be happy to show you if you go down this path. Respectfully Cairo1 :D
  13. Wonderful! Thank you for the vote of confidence! As I mentioned, I used to feed them years ago but worried when I saw piles of fine neck bones tossed up a few days later. . . . Yes, it isn't unusual but those bones were sharp and I did wonder if they could do any harm. I am able to get them in bulk and I know that my current crew will love them! Once again, thank you for your comments! Cheerio Cairo1 :D
  14. Hi All My canine members have increased somewhat and I am considering going back to feeding turkey necks for breakfast. I used to feed them regularly but often the girls would later throw up a selection of neck bones. I was not sure if this was a good thing or not? My vet did say that turkey necks were good but I am after a few more opinions. I know they are nutritious but the bone bits worry me a little. . . . Thanks for your time and looking forward to hearing your views. Cheers Cairo1
  15. I have only just come upon this thread and I thought it was interesting reading. I have a very large 10 month old German Shepherd boy and I mean LARGE. I also have a neck problem so I have elected to walk him in a halti (a Black Dog one). It is great for every day walking but I have noticed that it increases the level of frustration when meeting other dogs. I have found it to be completely counter productive in relation to socialisation. So, bad neck or not, when I am introducing him to any dog, I take the halti off. In a general sense though, I will continue to use it together with positive reinforcement until I know that he will not pull. So far it's working. :D Cairo1
  16. I am so glad to hear that your doggy is doing well. My experience has been bad. I have lost one dog to HGE and seen another go at the vet hospital where I worked for a while. It was a horrible death in both cases. I understand that it's a bug that lives in the soil and can be picked up anywhere. Fortunately it isn't that common. Best wishes for you and your dog! Cairo1

  19. Well guess what???? After heading off and looking at the above mentioned blogs I was also impressed with Big Honey's blog. I thought nothing more about it and today I decided to go into Newcastle and explore the area a bit. I am on a 'road trip' from Tassie and am only here for about 10 days. Anyway, I head up to Nobby's Lighthouse taking photos and on the way back I noticed a girl trying to photograph a great dane down on the dog beach. I thought I would photograph her photographing her dog and then something occurred to me. . . . . could that possibly be Honey? I stretched my legs and trotted off to join the lady and the dog at the beach and found them sunning themselves out of the wind. I approached the owner of the Dane and found that she looked a little Oriental - surely not, it couldn't possibly Big Honey and her mistress??? And it WAS!!!!! I can't spell her name but the lady was wonderfully friendly (with an awesome English accent) and we chatted for ages. We talked dogs and cameras (she has a Canon 7D like me) and walked back to the cars. So what a coincidence! Me on a road trip from Tassie, see a blog on DOL and the very next day meet the characters in question in a strange city. It definitely made a sunny day, sunnier!! Thought I would share. . . . ;) Cairo1
  20. Hello Vic Dolers I am looking at finding a board and training facility for a couple of weeks to look after a newly acquired 6 month old GSD. I am travelling and will be returning home mid July. I am not happy with her current accommodation and she could definitely do with some basic obedience training. She has a great recall but the rest leaves a lot to be desired. Any ideas?? Pro K9 (Ernie) is unable to help at this time so I am looking for other options. Thanks to all Cairo1
  21. Hi There!! I have two black shepherds and I would like to give you some suggestions. Please PM me Cairo1
  22. Nooooo, really?? I didn't think Django was up for that kind of sport!! He has obviously been watching too much TV :D I am pleased to hear he let the water rat go. . . . they are gorgeous little creatures and although quite common, very rarely seen! My three - yes, all three - have gone from rabbits to chickens More work on my hands  Cairo1
  23. Hello There! I recently discovered something about Stainless Steel Bowls that might help you! I have two Shelties (neither of them a shrinking violet) however, they hate the SS because if they have their collars on, the metal name tag bangs on the rim of the bowl and they HATE that. It must be a really harsh sound to them. . . . Now I simply leave a big plastic salad bowl for water. This may not be valid for you but it was something that took me a while to nut out!! Regards Cairo1 :-)
  24. Have you tried using a 'fill in' flash?? Cairo1
  25. They did an interesting study in Russia many years ago in selecting for tameness. They kept the human friendly cubs and continued to breed with them. One of the interesting aspects of the program was that those that were friendly started producing colored cubs ie black and white, with white increasing with generations! It appeared that there was a color gene attached to the 'tameness' factor! I can't remember all the details but if you care to look, you can find the short documentary on Youtube! It is fascinating viewing! Cheerio Cairo1
