  1. I wasn't going to but i'm thinking of bringing Loki, my GSD. I'm unsure whether I should leave him at home because he is such a basket case or if I should bring him because he is such a basket case I would love to see if Steve can give me some info on how to build drive in him. My other problem is that my crate is currently occupied by Nova as she is recovering from surgery. So I dunno yet.
  2. Like HR I take an enormous amount of pride in being a part of ADT. I believe his comment was based in this Kelpie-i and not intended to be in any way disparaging. Not the case at all. As you are probably aware, Erny and i have both recommended 4Paws to people here (and in life beyond DOL) and will continue to do so if we think it more suitable to them for whatever reason.
  3. So is the planet K9 in Nth melb the one that was in lilydale, run by Nicole Beasley?
  4. Planet K9 in Nth Melbourne? Did they move or is there another by the same name? Last time I checked Planet K9 was in lilydale which is outer eastern suburbs.
  5. I'm only at Heidleburg occasionally but next time I will be on the lookout for any basenjis! Back before I was a trainer I used to train my own dog with ADT twice a week and definately found it beneficial.
  6. Missing the point? I thought it was a question IE asking for our thoughts
  7. Couldn't agree more! If your pup gets plenty of raw chicken then he should get enough calcium. Do you give him water straight from the tap?
  8. I got mine from a pet shop in Boronia. I have seen them for sale at mega pet warehouse in Ringwood also. I have a rottweiler who can (and does) chew through just about anything, but the Orka is still completely intact despite sporadic gnawing
  9. Yes! The orka is a BIG success at my house too
  10. Have heard it can be a calcium deficiency.
  11. Don't leave any toys around K9, or just not the ones you use for training?
  12. Or you can do the NDTF course and learn that there is no such thing as purely positive reinforcement. Plus you will learn to train all the dogs that don't respond to +reinforcement. If I had a dollar for every idiot that told me my GSD was untrainable because he wouldn't take food treats.... Seems to me that the only person looking down their nose is you and I must say I'm shocked, I didn't think you were like that.
  13. Yep I never lend books they mean too much to me and i never get em back.
  14. I'm not into retrieving so you probably do things a little differently to me. I see what you are saying about wanting satisfaction to come from you, but isn't providing toys and playing giving them satisfaction? I think that if there is something that rewards your dogs more than you, like a toy of some kind, then not using it in training is just selling yourself down the river. I would however, ensure that the only time the dog got to play with that toy was when I provided it and called the shots as to when it was returned. So rather than leaving them around the yard, they only get them from you. By not using toys, many dogs tend to make their own entertainment, like you describe your dogs picking up sticks etc. I wouldn't want that, because the they are getting the satisfaction exclusive of you. I'd only play on my terms, not when the dog brought me something and demanded it.
  15. What is your issue with toys just out of interest?
  16. That's why I suggested the Burch and Bailey book. How dogs learn goes over operant conditioning, explains all four quadrants of the motivation matrix, covers extinction, jackpotting, marking, fading, chaining etc all in a very clear and concise manner. Packed full of information, but still an easy read for a novice
  17. And I'd just like to add that Ann has the most beasutiful sibe that I have ever seen Sorry I didn't get much chance to talk tonight, but you will be in my class next week most likely
  18. When you say he won't eat it, how long won't he eat it for? Try mixing a portion of mince with his normal food and gradually increase the mince and decrease the normal food. Don't pander to him, he won't starve himself to death. If he turns his nose up at what you offer, give him 10minutes and take it away. Feed nothing more until the next meal time. Before I switched from supercoat, Loki would starve himself for days. It was normal for him to only eat 3 meals a week and he wouldn't take treats no matter what they were. I couldn't walk him everyday or he would lose too much weight. Now he eats anything he can. Eats out of the garbage, steals off the bench etc etc. He's actually almost overweight! When Robert Holmes advised me to switch I thought it might make a small difference to his behaviour. WRONG! The difference was huge and it was obvious to everyone who saw him.
  19. I'm not exactly sure what you mean LL. Do you mean that you repeat the sit command when the dog is in the teaching phase?
  20. I don't have a stay command. The use of a release command negates the need.
