Toby is nearly 4 (althought acts like a 6 month old!) and is about 36kgs. He hasnt had any fits in nearly a week now so fingers crossed it was just hubbys slackness with his meds that threw out his levels. He isnt so bad now but when he was first on the Pb he was very lethargic. I asked our vet and she likened it to alchol in humans - when you first start drinking you only need 2 drinks to be drunk but the more you drink the more you need to get drunk and start to feel the affects. She must have been right as he isnt too bad atm. Poor bubba, some dogs seem to have the worst luck - we have one of those too. But you keep loving them and hoping for a miracle cure, there are so many times I have thought "I cant do this any more" but somehow the next day things dont seem so bad. Thanks I might have a word with them next time. Its not overly expensive but every little bit helps, plus I remember when Toby was on Prozac for his anti-social behaviour towards other dogs it was alot cheaper to buy it from the chemist with a script from the vet than to buy from the vet direct.

Saw this post and thought I would give you a bit of an update with Toby - our Staffy X who began having grand mal sieziers earlier this year (some of you might remember - i got some great advise from puggles and lillysmum). Well Toby is on 1x 100mg Ph morning and night - we recently had his blood levels checked an his is on the lower level so it appears we are only just controling his epliepsy, but good news that we have room to move. I am hesitant to up his meds untill he had more siezers as they make him quite lethargic. He had a fit this week, however this was due to my hubby being late with his medication, on the plus side he is comming out of the fits alot better. He barks ALOT but recognises who we are and isnt as freaked out as he once was. Remembering to give him the meds 12 hours a part is still difficult but we are getting their, its hard as we go out for dinner and socialise alot. Does everyone one Phenomax buy their drugs from the vet or is their a cheaper option? Hope your doggies are all doing well.

Thanks guys - I would always discuss something with my vet before giving it to my dog. Rather be safe than sorry. Might also try going back onto the BARF diet.

Thanks guys, we will be trying to stick to the 7 - 7 as strictly as possible whilst we are still in the testing of the medication - I might try to set an alarm on my phone so I dont forget. Its so great to hear about people going through the same thing. This morning we were both just in such a state, trying to clean up after him wondering how much longer we can do this for, especially since we hope to have a skin baby join us next year. We have new neighbours so I might go and get better acquainted with them - they have 3 dogs so they are obviously dog people! Just in case of emergencies or if we are away for the night. My OH's brother will be looking after the house/dog whilst we are away for the first week of our honeymoon and then we might have a friend or my mum come and look after Toby for the week after - we have tried several boarding kennels but none will take him as he is agressive towards other dogs. Im thinking about opening a kennels for special needs dogs!

The vet called back and she has advised to increase his medication to 1 tablet which i guess is 100mg twice a day. He is approx 36kgs. Then we go back in 2 weeks for a blood test to check the levels and increase if he is still having fits. So we will see how we go - everyone please cross their fingers for us. Thanks for all the info puggles you are a lifesaver. We do are very best to give him the tablets 12 hours apart but due to work commitments this is sometimes hard, do you have any tips? We normally aim for about 7am and 7pm however sometimes if we go out that can be difficult. Thanks again. Mel

Sorry I havent updated you all with what happened. Here is an update and hopefully someone might be able to provide me with more advise. We took Toby to the vets and he had blood work done - that came back all okay. We started him on Phenomav 100mg 1/2 a tablet twice a day. This went okay for a couple of weeks - he had a couple of fits but they were fairly spaced out (a week or 2 in between). Now he has started fitting again more frequently and more violently. He had a fit on Thursday morning (5am), Sunday morning (4.30) and again this morning at about 1am. This mornings was bad - he managed to knock over a dining room chair and pooed himeself. He seems okay this morning but vomited inside at about 7.30am. I have called the vets and they are going to ring me ASAP. I dont know if its because the medication isnt high enough or is his fitting caused by something else? Im so worried but I also dont know how much longer we can keep doing this. Lack of sleep is really affecting us and Toby doesnt seem to be happy at all. On top of that we are getting married in 5 weeks - there is no way I could expect our house sitter to deal with this while we are away - the clean up after a fit is repulsive.

Thank you frufru that helps alot. It did look like he was going to bite my OH when he first came around - but in hindsight we did the wrong thing by trying to get him outside, we should have just let him recover in his own time not pushing him around. And yes he is SO hungry - even more than normal.

We were woken this morning by a strage banging sound, ran out to the dinning room and found our 3yr old staffyx having a fit. He was laying on his side shaking violently, foaming at the mouth and had wet himself. This happened for about 2 mins. This was the first time this has happened. It was awful :D Aftter he stopped fitting my OH took him outside, he was a little shakey on his legs but seemed okay. OH went to pat him and he took of scared, started barking and running around uncontrolably. This lasted for approx 30mins, I didnt know what we were going to do as we couldnt get within 10mts of him - he actually climbed over one of our fences (just a small barier fence) to get away from us, he didnt know who we were or what was going on - its almost like his brain reset. I was so scared. After about 30mins he calmed abit, OH threw him a bone and then click - he was back. I called him inside and whilst he was still a bit flighty he seems okay. Now a few hours on he is okay, still seems very anxious and flighty but on the whole he seems okay. Do I need to make an appointment for a vet to see him or can anyone give me any advise on what to to do now? Because he is dog aggressive we really need a vet that makes house calls so that can be a bit expensive and difficult to organise but if needed thats fine.

I found adding a teaspoon of Missing Link supplement to my dogs food really improved his skin and coat - I dont know if it would help that much but might be worth a go.

Thanks Amhailte. Good luck with whichever one you choose. ;) I went to the vet last night and she has percribed Clomicalm along with alot of training for Toby. I asked about the hormone injection and she said that it would be a last resort due to the side effects and we would be better trying the Clomicalm first. I didnt ask what the side effects were. Fingers crossed this works, or helps, at $80 a month its not cheap!

Excellent Idea, we just brought a muzzle for Toby and as much as I hate the thing we dont get any dogs running up to us when we are on our walks. Its a very clear 'keep away' signal. The jacket is a very good idea.

I just thought just in case someone took it serious that i would scarifice my dog to the desensitisation program, you never know - people read things differently and they are not always taken in the same context in which they were written. Mana I wish I knew how to insert common sense into any dog with agression issues, but I am very clueless! Fingers crossed someone comes out with a "wake up to yourself' tablet for dogs

Big big bugger. Back to wishing for another quick fix and that my dog will wake up to himself. I came home today to find my new expensive sheets have been pulled off the line so I might take you up on that one Mana PS..just in case someone takes that the wrong way I would never actually hurt my dog.

If my dog won any ribbons I would hang them on the front door and take photocopies for around the home and take some to work as well! Is there a "most unsociable" ribbon by any chance?

Okay so the name of the hormone she thinks is Tardak? It didnt being with K after all I guess I am lucky in that Toby doesnt seem to mark his territory at all....he has only had a couple of accidents in the house as when he came to us he wasnt toilet trained. On walks he may go for a wee maybe once...but its normally quite obvious that he needed to go. Out in the yard I havent seen him marking places...just going when he needs to.

Thats what I thought to....but im far from anytype of expert. The implant might just make training a little more bearable. Just thinking out loud but earlier this year Toby was on a course of steriods for an allergy. I wonder if this would have had any effect on his behaviour as i know in humans sometimes it can?

Good to know that there is something out there that may help him, now I just have to search around for a vet that knows about it. The girl from work is from Melbourne and she absolutley raved about it (she had a dog agressive dog) she swears it was almost like someone had switched her dog...she went from having to muzzel him everytime they walked anywhere to taking him to the offlead parks.

I was speaking to a work colleague today who used to be a vet nurse, I was telling her about the problem we have with Toby (that he can be aggressive towards other dogs). She mentioned that there is a hormone implant that he can have which could help. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this? I called my vet and he didnt know anything about it. Thanks Mel

Oh I dont know...that sounds like a very sexy look to me The dog at work is a collie so with the longer hair he might be getting a reaction...something neither of us had thought of, I will ask him if he has alot of contact with the other dog. Im a fan of the Dyson too...have been checking them out on Ebay and trying to convince OH that i really neeeeeeed one, he disagrees but of course he would...he never does the vacuming!

I dont think he has them, he always has advantix or frontline every month and I checked him the other day and didnt see any? OH has a doctors appointment this week so hopefully he will tell us what it is. The place he works at also has a dog....im wondering if its possible he has brought them home??

Thanks guys, I bathed Toby yesterday and topped up his Advantix a week early. Also did a really good vacum of the house and we are getting the carpets and lounge steam cleaned in the next couple of weeks. Thanks Leenie those were really good suggestions, I dont like the idea of having the flea bombs as we have turtles and fish so would need to remove them before setting anything off...which involves moving a HUGE tank, so will be getting some borax and pepermint oil. I always wash his work clothes seperatley...they smell
