Looking to buy new puppy from breeder
teddybeans replied to flyers123's topic in General Dog Discussion
Actually I think this link may be more of use to you than the one I posted above https://www.dolforums.com.au/forum/62-dog-breeds-101/ I’m not sure what the difference is between the two threads but the posting look different and this one seems to have more coverage overall -

Here is the breed forum which may help you https://www.dolforums.com.au/forum/51-breed-sub-forums/ If you don’t know what breed you are after, maybe if you indicate what temperament of puppy you are looking for, people here can give you suggestions. This can help you narrow down the perfect breed for you and you can do your research. -

You should decide on the breed first and ask yourself does the temperament suit your lifestyle. For example, some dogs require a lot of exercise and if you are not a person that is active, then it’s not a good fit. If you have people in the family that has allergies then you probably want a dog that doesn’t shed etc. Personally, I would get a dog from a reputable breeder - I think there are registered breeders somewhere in this site but I can’t tell you where so perhaps someone else can help. The likes of gumtree and petstores, breeders may not be breeding ethically so I would stay away from those. A good Breeder will ask you the same questions and pick a pup that suits you, some won’t even let you chose, the breeders are close to the temperament of the litter so they are probably best to tell which one suits you. You also have a say on whether you want a boy or girl, temperament can be different. Its a long time commitment (and also an important one) so don’t take this process lightly, do your homework so there are no surprises later on. Don’t rush into it. this forum is great for finding out what the breeds are like and you have many pet lovers here that can answer your questions. good luck -
I’ve lost 2 dogs to cancer...undecided about another
teddybeans replied to Bluefairy56's topic in General Dog Discussion
I had two mutts, lived till around 14. Fed them supermarket dog food and table scraps, this was when we knew no better! Survived to 14 without any issues. Now with my two boys, they are on super premium dog food, no table scraps, they are now 9 but has had surgeries to remove lumps and bumps and has had dental issues. So I think it’s hard to know what to expect and because there is emotionally attachment, it hurts when it’s time to let go. -

I agree, it’s something that you don’t completely get over but must expect it being a pet owner. That and also when they are sick and you are helpless. -
This https://www.dailypuppy.com/potty-train-puppy-using-vinegar-water-1017.html you can make your own - it’s natural ingredients so should not harm. I haven’t tried it before but know someone that has and seems to work for them.

Oh is it? My boys don't really need a muzzle. I just put one on once in a blue moon when they are licking their paws. And because they hate it, it usually don't last on their muzzle more than a few minutes before I give in and take it off. -
Harness or Collar, what do you use for walks?
teddybeans replied to Animal House's topic in General Dog Discussion
I use the gentle leader harness. I often get comments from people who has never used the gentle leader harness that’s it’s such a weird design because the lead attached and swung in from the side which is the whole point to stop them from pulling? i find it works better for my two than just the regularly collar and leash -
I find clothes pegs are no strong enough for the foiled dog food bags especially the 20kg packs that I get my boys. The bag is also very rigid. Sometimes I use those stationary clips but also not strong enough. i resorted to to just folding the top of my 20kg bag and use packaging tape to close it, in addition I put it in one of those black Bunnings bin and close it with a lid. Recently I switched to meals for mutts which come with a snap lock at the top of the bag. Genius idea! While the snap lock is good, after a few times it loses the snappiness and I can’t to precisely seal it properly . I would like to see a kibble company introduce one of those slider locks at the top of the bag, that would be so useful

Recommended Vacuum for Pet Hair (Great Dane Shedding)?

Found it -
My aunt lives in Chicago where it snows every year. She has to put boots on her boy before walking him because of the salt they put on the ground for the ice. He doesn’t seem to be bothered and constantly gets praises from walkers commenting on the nice boots

Yeah some coats in the store are so thick and bulky and looks terribly uncomfortable, I don’t know why anyone buys those.
-
Oh I’m sorry to hear that. Schnauzers are such sweet dogs. So intelligent. Even if you say I’m biased

Recommended Vacuum for Pet Hair (Great Dane Shedding)?
teddybeans replied to bensonwillow's topic in General Dog Discussion
There was another thread on this forum regarding something similar but I can't find it now. I own a dyson myself and swear its the best vacumn cleaner out there. I've used to buy a hand held from the likes of target and they just lose suction after a few months. My dyson i've had for many years now and no sunction lost. I own a hand held, vacumn stick and also the full size vacuum cleaner - all dyson. If you want to save a bit of money, look for an older model, they do the job. I recently saw some very good deals on the dyson ebay site. Given its EOFY, there is likely to be some good deals on the older models. My dyson isn't "animal model' specific. -
@Kazm your babies in your avatar are gorgeous by the way! From one schnauzer mum to another
-
mine loves the hairdryer too. But hates being blown anywhere above the neck. So usually after a bath, I have two schnauzers that are completely dry from neck down and wet from neck up

I have a friend who told me she feeds her dogs fish oil vitamins. The human kind. Are there any benefits of doing this? My boys are on fish protein kibbles and gets 1 to 2 cans of sardines a week.

Yes this! Don't know why they are so afraid of putting one on. Once its on and they don't mind it

what kind of muzzle do you recommend for dogs with beards. I use something like this one - https://www.amazon.com/Small-Muzzle-Downtown-Pet-Supply/dp/B003MROHZW but its horrible for my schnauzers and they hate it. -
haha. I don't think mine are afraid either. But they don't like it. They HATE putting on their sweaters. I don't know why. It makes them so warm, but they run away everytime they see me hold it.

ah okay~! thanks for that. Both are gorgeous regardless :D
