As a breeder, you can ask the vet for a cover letter so you don't have to microchip until the pup is registerable with the local council or of a certain weight - some councils in Qld, that is 3 months and in some councils that is 6 months (at desexing time). I know my vet is happy to write a letter for toy breeds (not that I personally have an issue with microchipping early) and also if you have an unwell pup of any size. So, that would mean in Qld you *could* sell a purebred pup at 8 weeks, not registered and not microchipped - depending on special circumstances of course!
-
Yes you are correct however, the question then becomes "when" do they have to be registered? There's a lot of leeway there and I'm pretty sure that you can wait to register a litter for up to 6 months at least in Qld and in Vic it's 18 months!

All Time Favourite Grooming Range
t-time replied to Sagittarian's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm loving Isle of Dogs...SO EXPENSIVE but does the job I need done. 2nd for me atm is Laserlites and if the Isle of Dogs loses effectiveness for my dogs, I'll go back to Laserlites. -
Thanks Staranais - DOH - forgot the reason the OP didn't want to desex early and I was only thinking about pregnancy prevention

How Often Do You Feed Sardines And Eggs?
t-time replied to Boxer05's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
One day a week we have sardines mixed with regular food and one day a week we have raw eggs with regular diet. :D Young pups also get an extra egg meal of scrambled cooked eggs mixed with an appropriate puppy milk - they LOVE it! Big meaty bones one day per week, chicken or turkey wings one day a week. The other 3 days is a bit boring for them but I mix it up and often add an extra day of bones for variety. :D Regular diet is my own BARF-type mix with veges, leftovers, chicken frame mince and Eaglepack or similar kibble. ;) Oh - and shock horror!! - they also get a dog roll or pre-made balls occasionally. ETA: Even my most piggy dog won't eat whole fish. -
You will also find that bitches in season are NOT PERMITTED to be at dog parks or any other public areas. :D So maybe print that section of your local laws What about the Suprelorin implant?

Dogs Victoria Wanting To Take More Decisions From Breeders.
t-time replied to Steve's topic in Breeders Community
Steve what do non-VCA members do about this? Havanese hasn't changed but Tibetan Terrier age for breeding is going to be 18 months. This is an interesting age limit as previously you couldn't test for eye issues prior to that age (later onset cataracts etc) so I'm guessing "they" chose 18 months due to (voluntary) health tests? Like, how the heck did they just come up with "oh Tibetan Terriers - 18 months"!!!!! :D I mean most of the other dogs in the 18 month section are large breeds! With all the recent advances in DNA testing and other available health tests, there is no reason why you shouldn't mate a younger TT bitch other than adequate maturity - something that most breeders should be able to assess themselves surely?! :D -
There are also a few good websites to source shampoos & conditioners/doggy stuff in general - check the "Marketplace" here on DOL. :D For availability to pet owners, Aloveen is great and top of the range :D But there are many, many other brands which show people use :D I'm another who also uses J&J No More Tears - particularly on my bubbas

Your puppy could just be "snorty" but regardless, I recommend that all new puppy buyers get a health check for peace of mind. Mention the snuffles to the vet and say you would like that checked out in particular.

Oh Steve! You poor thing! That's just terribly sad.

Anaesthetic Reaction, How Common?
t-time replied to Bundyburger's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Tibetan Terriers get "Anaesthetic Idiosyncrasy" - my vets have been informed and Rappie would know, but they use one of the newer-generation anaesthetics?? Not sure which one..... Just a comment really But I haven't heard of many reactions so this post jumped out at me Hope your boy feels better soon -
Oh, sorry for the misinformation then I thought Woolies were doing standard pricing across Australia

I feed minced chicken frames as a regular part of my dogs' diet. It's got offal, bone, fat and meat and they've got other items to *chew* whether it be bones or kibble. Fish, veges and eggs and less so, fruit because most of mine don't like the fruit - love their veges though! I don't see much value in feeding regular premium grade human stuff as there's no bone, generally for humans, the mince is "lean" and my dog mince has offal which the human mince doesn't. My dogs have had whole hearts etc and they think they are toys to lick! It's a waste of money as they end up lying around the yard stinking and covered in ants and dirt.

Skinless chicken breast is $7.60 at Woolies this week

The bitch has gone to a relative of the workmate who intends to whelp her and then desex - naturally I have no definitive way of knowing that this is what will happen. I have recommended (via my partner) that they still contact the rescue organisations which have been suggested to ensure good responsible homes for the pups but at this stage, they would like to keep the bitch. The pound has been notified apparently, so if an owner comes forward, they have the contact details of the person now in possession of the bitch. I really appreciate everyone's input into this discussion and the lovely generous offers of a good home for this girl (and there have been quite a few!) This will be the end of it as my hands are tied as to what actually happens with this particular girl but for all the kind-hearted people who felt they could offer a home to this sad case, please remember there are equally needy dogs out there looking for homes and those who are PTS each week for lack of a home.
-
Chill pill! No further info at this stage. Waitin g for my partner to come home to see if there's any more to the story today.
-
WOW! I was really shocked to see 5 pages this morning! ;) Firstly, I am reporting what I know - the bitch was found by a workmate of my partner and what I have posted is all the information I have at this stage....my partner called me from work to see if I could help or had suggestions, hence the post here. There have been many good suggestions and offers of help - thankyou SO MUCH to all those people! I don't know whether or not the pound would PTS after 3 days or 7 days - We are in Moreton Bay RC but I don't know where the workmate lives. My parents, also with this council had a miniature pony turn up in their backyard year before last and the council were notified and they said my parents could do what they wanted with it!! Lots has changed with Animal laws recently due to the amalgamations....... Vets guessing the age of a dog - perhaps it *is* an older but a smaller-type Lab - don't know....apparently no chip and by all accounts very pregnant. So that's it! I will let you guys know what happens once something is sorted out.
-
I've passed on the number so hopefully yes, Annie can help out.
-
I'd take her on too - if I didn't already have a houseful and a litter due Vet. The took her to the vet when they suspected she was quite pregnant. Really hoping I can find her a nice place with someone experienced or else at least get her proper care - obviously the people who found her have already gone to some length to find the owner and take her to a vet........this is just a sad situation. Thanks so much for the contact! Is this Blacklabrador here on DOL?
-
A pregnant Labrador girl has been found and it is thought she is approx. 8 months old. The "finder" has contacted the pound who says they will put her down; RSPCA reckons they can't do anything WTF???!! I haven't personally seen the bitch, don't know if she's purebred (apparently the 8 month age suggested is from a vet) and we have no idea what has mated her..... Can anyone here take on this girl? I have suggested that the best thing to do would be to desex her (aborting the pups at the same time) but the real issue is that she is essentially a stray (not chipped) and gawd knows when she's due to whelp. What to do? Any ideas?

Thanks Dellcara. Thought that might be the case

Can anyone tell me if there were 750 dogs at the Marion Kennel club shows in Sth Aust over the weekend? Thanks in advance.
-
Yes, I have used it....I think it's not a bad food (nutritionally) but personally I found that my dogs go pretty stinky on it!! eg hair, general body odour and poo! :p I have other friends using it and finding it to be excellent. Just see how your dog/s go on it and take it from there.
-
Agree with the other posters - my pups always get chicken wings (not necks) - a lifetime of good dental care! ETA: Toy breed - 1.8kgs at 8 weeks - chicken wing takes all day!

Hey Norskgra I am just a little curious - removing a bowel section shouldn't affect what he can eat unless you're talking immediately post-op. I would be looking for another reason as why he can't eat fattier foods...pancreas? Or perhaps you just need to introduce the fattier foods more slowly into the diet? Just some thoughts
