  1. Perhaps it's just a long-coated breed thing but I supply grooming equipment in my puppy pack - face comb, detangler comb and a PP pin brush :D
  2. Agree with Missymoo though naturally, we are not vets! Generally, a dog "skipping" indicates some level of patella luxation. The vet can simply manipulate the kneecap to see how much movement there is in the joint and advise you of your options.
  3. What makes you think that the breed has to shed or is worse for allergies, just because it has a double coat?? There are several breeds with double coats which are non-shedding and low allergy as a result!!
  4. You say it's particularly when he needs to go to the loo....so is it his backside that's itchy? Is he running his bottom along the ground? ;) Diet sounds very good so unless it's an allover itch - I'm baffled! Bottom scooting is a whole other thing. More info about where he's itchy please!
  5. The ACV is supposed to help change the PH in the water. I have long-coated breeds and I'm using it in an attempt to keep tear staining at bay. Along with eye cleaning regularly, it does seem to be having some positive effect on my girls. (I figured it can't hurt anyway! ) Been using it on and off for as long as I've had dogs (many years!) and it's only been about the last year that I've been using it intensively. You do see the cloudy stuff in the supermarket occasionally - look more towards the shelves with the balsamic vinegar etc Or else health shops always stock it. Sometimes you can pick up really raw ACV for horses in the produce store - it's not as processed as storebought human grade stuff but it sure looks HEALTHY! I use ACV diluted 50/50 with filtered water and I clean the ears fortnightly or more often if there happens to be a problem or particularly grubby ears . I will also dunk their hairy lil feet in it if they are licking their paws!
  6. Thanks Lappiemum. I'm glad a Victorian found the thread!
  7. Puggy provided the link but doesn't know the details! No need to have a go Gareth....I didn't miss the bolded part of the query but yes, it was unclear, which is why I asked which part you didn't understand.....are you also interested in the show training? ;) Dogs Vic might not necessarily run the show classes themselves but they will know where the classes are held or who to contact to find out! Alternatively, you or the OP might like to post in the Showring and there's bound to be someone Victorian in there who knows where to go and who to contact. ;)
  8. Gareth, I think what Puggy posted is pretty self explanatory!! ;) You have to be a member of your state organisation to show a dog. The canine assoc of that state runs show training - usually once a week - most local Kennel Clubs also have show training. Puggy provided a link to the Dogs Victoria website so that the OP can check it out. What don't you understand??
  9. Ashlin - you said that she wees on command - are you giving her the command when you're out and about?
  10. Absolutely use the cloudy ACV with the Mother in it! The Mother is what makes it so good and wholesome ;) My dogs get ACV in all their drinking water, I add a capful to their food every day, I clean their ears with it - GREAT STUFF! White vinegar just doesn't cut it for me - interesting that a vet suggested it but maybe they hadn't heard about ACV? ;) The ACV (or any vinegar) will not sting unless there are open wounds or scratches in the ear. :D
  11. Not a new treatment lucky pup! A great old-fashioned remedy! It doesn't work for everyone but yes, I've had success with it in the past.
  12. Yes Baby Dragon - actually I washed 3 of my dogs in it yesterday! Been using this product on & off for many years now and it's fantastic as an added extra to keep those ticks and fleas away. I use it in low tick season to give my guys a rest from Advantix for a few months. As soon as I start seeing ticks - back on the Advantix. BE warned - it is not a product designed for complete protection against ticks. But does a good job of killing what might be on the dog (fleas in particular - you can just watch them crawl out and die!). You're absolutely right - it's a bit much to be washing your dog every 3 days with the stuff! So I tend to use it once a week or fortnightly when I give the girls a bath. Once again - I do not use it as full-on tick protection.
  13. Leave your puppy in the crate with papers for the entire trip. ;) Plenty of time & opportunity to start proper toilet training when you get home. I wouldn't be putting a new puppy on dirty "unknown" ground before you even get a chance to get her home! You will probably find you have a whining puppy for the first hour of the journey and then she will fall asleep. Tip: Take some baby wipes! If she poops in the crate, just stop the car and clean up the mess so you don't get stinked out! (And a plastic bag to put messes in.) Have a FANTASTIC day!!
  14. My guess is he's hungry and there's nothing in his tummy! Typical Lab! There is another very similar thread in the health/nutrition/grooming section about Vomiting Bile. Check that out for some answers as well! (The clear stuff sounds like stomach juices)
  15. Oh yes Erny, I see what you mean upon reading the OPs post again. Apologies to the OP. What are you wiping her face with? Irritation or mites sound the likely issue.
  16. Teething (I'm assuming this is a puppy because of the kibble) Tear staining always gets worse around teething time. You do have to clean the eye area every day to keep the face looking clean Maltese in the showring have their faces done EVERY day and usually more than once! You can purchase all varieties of eye cleaner from a pet some or try the camomile teabags as suggested
  17. Couple of things - even though you are cooking the egg, it could still be that. I always feed my dogs egg but I have one dog which can't even tolerate it if it's an ingredient in kibble! Try the egg for brekky instead of at night and see how that goes. You will be able to gauge the reaction to the egg if you just try the cooked egg by itself and see if your puppy vomits. The other thing is, I personally wouldn't be putting a puppy on a low fat diet - not yet anyway. Puppies need a higher level of fat in their diets (generally speaking) and I think you should try and eliminate other foods before going low-fat in a growing pup. JMHO. Next thing that occurs to me is that your puppy might actually be hungry! Vomiting bile indicates there is nothing in his/her tummy to throw up! If possible, start feeding puppy smaller meals more frequently even if it's just for a few weeks to try it out. Good idea to leave snacks at night for the pup, some kibble or something so the tummy isn't empty in the morning. Just some ideas to consider before getting drastic about food allergy and spending a fortune at the vets!
  18. Same here Poodlewrangler - Frontline is absolutely useless in my area.
  19. No, the dosage sounds fine - he just reacts badly to it... And your other poodle doesn't react badly. Who knows why but I definitely wouldn't be trying it again on the dog that reacts poorly.
  20. Hi Poodle proud, Yes, all 3 dogs mentioned were fine. The reaction was only temporary and after 24 hours, they were back to normal. Like you, the owners used the product for a second time to rule out coincidence but the same reactions occurred. Dogs having seizures is not a good thing! I've found the Killtix collars to be very good. Could your poodle wear one of those instead? They are a lot cheaper than Advantix and seem to work. If your baby is being irritated by the fleas actually biting, try diluting some Fidos Flea and Tick Shampoo in a spray bottle and squirt some of that on the area (base of tail is so common!). Hope this helps.
  21. Short answer is this....yes dogs can have a bad reaction to Advantix. I know of 3 dogs where this has happened and incidently they have all been Bichons or Poodle mixes. Exactly the same reaction as your dog. So don't use Advantix on your Poodle. There is an info number on the box and you can contact the manufacturers and report a bad reaction. Your vet should also report it to the manufacturer. Curious why you changed products when the other was working? Or was it because of the extra tick protection afforded by Advantix? There are alternatives if it was for the tick protection (like a tick collar or daily checking for ticks) and there are plenty of products on the market which will cover for fleas effectively. I love Advantix and it's incredibly effective for my dogs but yes, like people, some dogs can suffer an adverse reaction to certain drugs.
  22. Well, I'm an Advantix lover STILL after now, hmmm....4 years approx. I'm in an extremely bad tick area and I haven't had any issues with ticks or fleas EXCEPT when I've gotten slack about application. I also like KILLTIX collars as they tend to be a little better in the water/swimming dept. Oceanaussi - you have short-coated dogs. The absolute BEST way to prevent ticks is daily inspection of your dog and pull them off when you find them. Me, I have 7 long-coats. I do run my hands over them daily but it's easy to miss a tick, hence the tick chemicals I choose to use. If you are really unhappy about the chemicals, treat for fleas when and if you need to and inspect for ticks DAILY.
  23. Methinks the Borzoi bitch needs some training! I'd do some very supervised play with the Salukis in their coats and as soon as the Borzoi starts trying to go for the coats, give her a good strong "no" and perhaps remove her from play "timeout" LOL until she gets the idea that it's just not acceptable. Worth a try!
