  1. Why don't you contact the companies which do Frozen Semen transportation? :D There is a heck of a lot of paperwork associated with transportation of semen and the tank falls under some special category for air travel due to the liquid nitrogen ( = bomb!!! ) - much easier to get experienced people doing the paperwork. Alternatively, you can "share" tanks I understand, making the whole exercise a lot cheaper.
  2. :D Not necessary very rude Mysticview has similar ideals to mine when it comes to the sale of a puppy Once you have made the decision to sell to a particular person, the puppy is paid for and gone to their new home, you can only hope that as a dedicated breeder, you've done your best and provided the new owners with as much info and offers of support as you can. The rest is up to your puppy buyer and here's hoping your instincts were right and you chose a good one! Why? My Pet puppies are never sold on Main Register - always Limited with a desexing clause - and if I've made a mistake about the show potential of a particular puppy then too bad for me.
  3. Meant to say as well - while in my circumstances and my rarer breed, it's not uncommon for the market price of a pup to be different, I do think it would be unusual in a more common breed where there is a "set" price in place for that particular breed. Hope that makes sense?
  4. Well - shoot me! Personally, I won't decide on a price for my pups until I can figure out what quality they are; what sexes and colours I've got and yes, what other breeders are charging atm. This really varies in both my breeds and naturally I want to sell the pups at MARKET value. If I set a price a lot higher than other breeders then the likelihood of sales is minimised in an already small market. If the price is too low, people might think they're dealing with Woolies! If I get a female chocolate puppy - once again, I *can* charge more as the market demand is much higher - it's not like I can actually breed for a chocolate in my breed and if it's already here and I don't need that pup for my own purposes, then why not ask (and get!) a decent price for it? (I've only bred the one choc Hav and she *is* in a show home.) Ditto for particolours which everyone seems to want. Sorry but I don't see that as being a crime! I don't have a hard and fast rule about show potential puppies being more expensive - in fact - in some cases, the price has been less as I'd prefer a pup to be in the ring! Limited register pet puppies generally need more back up support, more questions, more grooming advice - how do they join a puppy school, when should I give puppy a bone, puppy has the runs what do I do etc etc. Matching pups with suitable homes is of utmost importance but I'm still going to sell pups for the price that I want to.
  5. Congrats! Welcome to the world lil' bubbas!
  6. Is Dani showing signs of being in labour? If there is no puppy within the next hour, I would be seeking out another vet quick smart. I'm with Ellz - I don't like green although a little meconium tinge in a bitch who is whelping ok is acceptable to me. Where in Qld are you Rose Red and maybe I can suggest a vet if I know of one in your area.
  7. Thanks Flick Mac - I was purely going by the information offered by the OP - I'm no scientist! But that's interesting that the tapetum is indeed responsible for the night vision! :p
  8. She would have minimal pigment in her choroid and you'd have visible blood cells making her eye reflection more red. Lacey would be similar to Coconut as I notice she has liver/dark brown pigment so her red blood cells behind her eye would also be more visible. This has nothing to do with how much tapetum she has :p The *amount* of reflection has nothing to do with the *colour* of the reflection. A smaller tapetum would be indicated by a dull reflection or no reflection in which case, yes, the dogs' night vision might be worse (although do note that the words "probably improves night vision" as what is quoted so tapetum might have nothing to do with night vision!!). But you are getting pigment and colour confused with tapetum. To make it simpler for you prolly break down the paragraph you bolded. The colored reflection from the eyes of dogs comes from a layer of tissue at the back of the eye (the choroid) that contains blood vessels, brown pigment cells, and, in most dogs, a shiny cell layer (the tapetum) covering mostly the upper half. This tapetum probably improves animals' vision at night. It may be yellow, green, blue, orange, or variations in between those colors. So the tapetum is the usual source of a dog's eye reflection. Some dogs, though, have very small tapeta or none at all and they show a very dull reflection or none at all. In other dogs, especially dogs with certain hair coat colors (liver, orange-brown) or with blue eyes (irises), very little pigment is present in the back of the eye and the blood vessels that are normally hidden by this pigment are visible and make the reflection bright red. Hope that makes sense! :p
  9. Although I tend to agree with Abigail, you might want to note that competing dogs (whether agility, obedience or conformation) still have to be vaccinated....and very few clubs allow titre tests for antibodies.
  10. Well, don't take what I said as "gospel" LOL - I could be wrong but it makes sense to me.
  11. Agree with other posters here. Personally, I would wait until the babies have their vaccinations and just do Mum at that time. If you vaccinate yearly (although as mentioned every 3 yrs is now recommended) - the vaccination does not have to happen EXACTLY 365 days since last time! :D So, give or take a month?? No problems.
  12. As quarantine areas are considered "Federal", Dangerous Dog laws do not apply. If a dog were to bite someone that's a local/state matter....unless the dog is prohibited breed. My take on it only.
  13. I don't know the answer BUT I think it depends on whether the product is going to be sold or whether it's for personal use? If it's for personal use, pretty sure you would only have to fill out a customs declaration but for sale is different (the part I don't know about ) WHAT ARE YOU GETTING???
  14. Thankyou Miranda! For staying on topic....if you guys want to have the desexing debate, please go elsewhere OP - I do agree with Miranda. The bitch is either stressed or excited with the new dogs in the environment so it's best to stick with your current arrangements and keep your girl separate. I may have missed it but how old are your foster pups? And are they staying to be raised with you?
  15. Ta! I'll also pass this on when I speak to her tomorrow night.
  16. There are quite a few obedience-titled Tibetan Terriers considering they are not a common breed - also good at Agility, doggy dancing and we even now have a dog with an Endurance title! They are highly intelligent but like all Tibetan Breeds, they are independent thinkers which *can* sometimes be challenging when it comes to Obedience - they get bored with constant repetition and need a bit of variety. GREAT with children and no problem with cats or other animals *if they are introduced properly at a young age* Not yappy but will certainly alert you to a problem - a good inside/outside dog who are happy to romp around outdoors but like cuddles with their family. An extremely loyal breed - their family is their world. Non-shedding but a clip 3 - 4 times a year will keep the coat manageable for a family situation. Very good family dogs!
  17. Growing up, our Newfie girl was gentle with everyone but a salesman turned up one day and there was NO WAY she was going to let him in the gate - she meant *BUSINESS* barking ferociously and charging at him repeatedly, peeling off about 8 feet away and then charging again! Dad couldn't stop her - she was dead-set something was wrong about this guy he had to leave..... Now months later, we found out that the police had pulled up this guy along with a few others and they had a map of the entire suburb (actually 3 suburbs) with "X marks a dog" and the homes either side of the dog property also crossed off......every home without a dog or a neighbouring property with a dog, was BURGLED! I would say that Newfoundlands are very protective when they absolutely need to be. :D
  18. Breeders should be grooming their puppies from an early age. Not saying the puppy will be *used to it* but a long-coat breed should definitely have the experience of grooming well before going to a new home. What about a Tibetan Terrier?
  19. I was surprised to find that you are supposed to pay a yearly rego fee on stored semen but I suppose once you sell it or if the dog passes on, there has to be some sort of registration in place
  20. Beat me to it SK. Tuck in a mattress protector or make a couch cover out of mattress protectors. Then put your regular covers over the top of that. :D You still have to wash the top layer but the underneath can be left for a while until it gets REALLY grubby! Alternatively, you can fork out for full Scotchgard - I have a couple of lovely old chairs with velvet covers - they are Scotchgarded and the dogs can even eat their bones on them and I just wipe the seat.
  21. Firstly - I haven't exported frozen semen but somewhere in the back of my mind, I think you do have to provide an export certificate. I've just spent a bit of time checking through the rules this morning - different for each state - and I can't find anything pertaining to exporting semen, only importing - but I do know that if you have semen frozen here in Australia THAT is supposed to be registered. If you import semen there is supposed to be a "true copy of pedigree" provided to register pups resulting from imported semen. It's a start. :D Would be very interested to hear the eventual answer.
  22. :D Oakway - Havs *are* related to the Bichon family but I'm assuming the OP is talking about a Bichon Frise How is the mum going bubumelon?
  23. Ditto for my sister who had a major scar on her face following an accident. Vitamin E capsules, break them open and rub into the scarring - work wonders! You'd never know that sister had a 23cm scar on her face! :D Bio Oil sounds interesting...what's in it Sas? Those photos are really impressive looks like a different dog!
