Is There A Greyhound Rescue In Brisbane?
CBL replied to a topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
GAP Qld would be my first port of call I think - otherwise Friends of the Hound might also cover Brisbane but I am not sure. Some greys would cope just fine in this sort of home - I know my Patch is fine left alone and he is great with kids - very tolerant and calm - kids gravitate to him (but she can't have him ). My girl Lilly wouldn't cope as an only dog though. Any good rescue will match a dog to her needs. -
I use their auto delivery too. I had one bag that was supposedly delivered but never arrived. They took it up with the courier (as their system said they delivered it) and sent me a replacement bag for free.

OMG how have I not seen tiny pony before now He is beyond adorable! I have had flashbacks to my demands for a white pony when I was little

Yep Oscar acts like he owns the place here at home. Anyone who comes over is sussed out for a few minutes and then given a ball to play with him. Outside though, he is much more reserved and prefers to stick close to us. We have also had issues with other dogs offlead rushing him so that has not helped. The greys behave beautifully with him, really they let him get away with murder. I very rarely have to step in if play is getting rough but that is very rare. He actually thinks every greyhound he meets must be his best friend. Definitely not for everyone but I absolutely adore my little man and he adores me too - he is the one who is SUPER excited to see me when I come back from being away, even if it is just an overnight trip. Krislin she is absolutely enchanting, I can see why you are smitten. The seal colour has really grown on me (or maybe I am just seeing better quality ones around now).

The preliminary assessment done on dogs before they are accepted into rescue is a behaviour assessment, not a temperament assessment. It is to record how the dog behaves when put in certain situations. From that, it is possible to gain an insight as to whether this dog is likely to act undesirably in some situations it might be faced with in future. It can rule out dogs that show dangerous behaviour, and help rescue gauge how 'easy' the dog is going to be to manage in foster care. But it isn't foolproof, because like people, dogs might feel and act differently at different times. Then while dogs are in foster care, over weeks their true temperament emerges and can be recorded. Depending on what the carer does and whether they follow a formal program, all sorts of things can be learned about the dog, and the dog will get basic training to improve its manners generally. The better the standard of foster care, the easier it is to match a dog to the right new family. Breeds differ, but in greyhounds, you need two weeks before the dog is comfortable and settled enough in a home to show its normal temperament. If the dog is not settled within that time then a deeper investigation needs to be done into the dog and the carer's management. Part of responsible and ethical rescue is documenting behaviour observations at all stages. The history needs to be asked for and recorded from the person surrendering the dog, the behaviour assessment needs to be recorded, and any undesirable behaviour while the dog is in foster care also needs to be recorded. All of this history needs to be made available to the adopter. If there is any aggression towards people or other serious problems known, the dog should be withdrawn from sale. Disclosure of issues to the adopter does not limit the rescue's liability for adopting out a dangerous dog. I totally agree with the above As Greytmate knows, we adopted our Patch through GAP Qld (though was a slightly strange circumstance). When we adopted him we got his foster care book - which was filled out by each of his foster carers (3) and documented how he responded in a variety of situations (to the vacuum cleaner, to other dogs, being left alone etc). It is such a great resource. It showed how they had assessed his behaviour and that each home exposed him to similar and also different situations (one home had caged birds for example). I admit I also love going through the book every so often and looking at how he behaves now and how that compares to when he was in care. In most cases it is spot on with what he is like now ('has difficultly distinguishing concrete from grass ').

Oh Kylie I am so sorry
-
I have a poo-eater (Oscar) - but he won't eat his own, he eats one of the other dogs (Patch but not Lilly). We have tried giving all of them pineapple but both Oscar and Patch threw the pineapple up! I am at a loss of what to do. Oscar has a sensitive stomach and this certainly isn't helping - and there is nothing worse than cleaning up vomit full of dog poo I can't always be there to clean it up immediately (though I try to). Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

My guys LOVE munching on carrots. They get at least 3 or 4 a week each.
-
I am so sorry Teebs My heart sank when I saw this thread, Atlas was one of the special DOL dogs - one we all feel like we know personally and we all love.
-
edit - my mistake (got the surname wrong). My sympathies to his family
-
There are a lot of ribs showing but then mine have looked like that in the past too - especially with this colder weather, they drop weight so easily. I personally prefer my greys on the ribbier side than on the chubby side. Mine LOVE an ice-cream too. Seems to be a favourite treat amongst a lot of breeds, not just greys :) I have one who devours the whole thing in a couple of bites and another who ever so delicately licks it and takes forever! edit - asal you are right on looking again lots of muscle definition rather than ribs in that shot

Thinking of you and cookie today. All fingers and paws crossed here for good news
-
I have been lurking in here, willing little Cookie to get better. Yet again you are doing such a brilliant job k9angel
-
apparently they were best friends and both surrounded to a pound due to a marriage breakup. The iggy is 11 and the grey is 6.
-
Oh you got them! I kept thinking of Oscar and Lilly (who are best buddies) being stuck in a cold pound somewhere
-
Ms James - that groups isn't running anymore. The current Iggy Rescue now runs out of NSW but coordinates across states both in taking in dogs and in adopting them out. PM dogmad or indigirl as they run the rescue group :)
