I had wondered that too, whether he just doesn't like them being touched - he really does his best to get away from me when it is time for his ear drops. When you lift up his ear he immediately pulls it back down. So I have wondered if I am overreacting, but then I would hate to not investigate it and have him in pain No he hasn't been put under - but I guess xraying and a closer look is the next step.

but both ears? I think the next step will be an xray so that would show up.

Our vets have long suspected that Patch has an allergy as occassionally he will yelp when we give him a scratch behind the ears and he will duck his head when we touch them (and one ear would be a little pink). I had tried a couple of different antihistamines but it didn't seem to do much. Last week his ears were obviously quite sore - pulling his ears away when we lifted them, yelping more often (rather than just once in a couple of months). I took him to the vet who could see no obvious signs of inflammation or infection (they did swabs) and they were nice and clean. The vets were stumped as to what it could be and suggested I try another antihistamine and dermotic drops in his ears (which the poor bugger hates - he runs when he sees the bottle). Its been over a week since the vet visit and they are showing no signs of improvement. I will be taking him back this week but just wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

Thats terrible to hear Vickie

Yep thats definitely a baby koel The inbuilt knowledge that they must have is amazing

That internal drive to turf other eggs out is just fascinating isn't it! I also love the cuckoo - fairy-wren arms race that is happening now, just amazing... Great photo Ripley I always wonder what must go through the mind of an adult trying to feed a baby that is growing larger than they are

I LOVE the site CBL!!! I have been using it for a few years now, and I have found it invaluable in identifying birds. I am not a member, maybe I will go & join now. One thing I would like to see is a couple more photos for each bird...as some species are so simlar that it is hard to ID from a single photo. Unfortunately in some cases we only have one or two photos - we are always keen on getting more :p One feature I want to build into the site is the ability to click and enlarge the photo. Once we get things fixed up on there I will be reminding members that if they have suitable photos we can use then we will always welcome them!

Can't believe I missed this thread! - Ripley - Birds in Backyards has a Koel survey running so let us know when your boy is around :p Vicki - so glad you like and use the Birds in Backyards website - are you a member? We are going to be giving it a facelift soon and I want to work on the Bird Finder a bit - it needs some tweeking. Great photo btw and how lucky are you to have a fan-tailed cuckoo around! I am very jealous!

I have a poo-eater here (will only eat the others though). There have been a couple of incidents when it hasnt agreed with him - it is truely revolting. The worst was when he threw it up all over our bed - on Xmas eve no less. I immediately took the doona to the drycleaners and apologised for what they were about to encounter

My guys are on the fresh mix and look great I did try them on the maximal but it was too rich for them.

I spoke to the owner via PM a couple of times to check in and give some advice on toilet training and potentially allowing him inside (plus some links to information about the iggy personality). Last I heard he was still sleeping in the garage but did have a heated bed and coat and was allowed to spend some time inside. The husband was doing some training with him. While they had decided not to sell him, there is an add on gumtree that I am assuming is the same dog. I did encourage her to keep coming back here and letting us know how he is going.

I give it to both my greyhounds. Patch has arthritis in his back hips/legs and he improvement in his tempremant since he has been on it has been amazing Prior to giving it to him we were finding he was being very grumpy with the other dogs and generally very quiet and withdrawn. He is now much happier and is playing a lot more I have given them jointguard as well as the human form (with chondroitin) and had both powder and tablets. At the moment they have tablets and I just pop them in with their dinner.
-
Our greyhound Patch does this too - every time he gets anything with bone like necks or wings he vomits up bits the next day.
-
Glad he is OK IggiePiggie ;) Oscar actually handled his vacc really well but he was microchipped by his breeder so I don't know how he went there. He had his annual vaccs a couple of weeks ago but was fine except for a bit of local swelling.

My Lilly has a heart murmur (grade 2 or 3) and our vet seems to think that heart problems are very uncommon in the breed. In fact, greyhounds tend to be one of the 'healthier' breeds going round according to him. Yes, they are definitely one of the healthier breeds. Part of the reason I recommend them to so many people. Sounds like heart problems are on the decrease then Lilly's heart murmur is a bit of a blessing - she was always going to live with us when she finished racing, but because of it she arrived on our couch a little early  Our 2 are very different in personality. Patch is the calm, serene boy (though his zoomies consist of him spinning in a circle on the spot), he subtley comes over for a pat and does the 'greyhound lean'. Lilly is younger and much more 'in your face' - she is our velcro dog who loves nothing more than to be whereever we are. She jumps, counter-surfs and loves to lick everyone and everything.

Healing thoughts for Sweep - hope you are OK Shmoo :D

IggiePiggie I think you may need to start taking him out (or to a place in the house that is his designated toilet place) at regular intervels so you can reward him for going in the right place. Iggys are notoriously difficult to toilet train but I know Oscar wasn't as bad as I was expecting - but then I could never get him to love his crate.
-
Doesn't matter whether it is clippers or a dremmel, Oscar hates it - he has never been hurt during it, just hates having it done, consequently his nails are always a bit too long. It takes two of us to do it, me to grab and clip and the OH to shovel treats into his mouth.
-
Thanks guys - I certainly stop him whenever I catch him, and when he has his coat on he doesn't touch it - but after a while his coat drives him mad too. Will apply some salty water and betadine and if he continues to pick at it then he is going to have to sulk with a bucket head.
-
Oscar has a small gouge in his side (Patch told him off but accidently connected with him as Oscar was on his blind side). It heals over, but then he licks it and picks the top off again. I was hesitant to put anything on or over it to try and keep it dry and aired but is this the best option if he is opening it up again once a day? Its not showing any sign of infection so far but I don't want to give it the chance to either.
