Wow can't say I have ever gotten offended by Oscar being called a whippet I explain he is an Italian Greyhound and if they look at me puzzled I just tell them they look like whippets but just smaller (though he is a biggy iggy). He gets lots of compliments when we are out including an older macedonian lady who stopped us on a walk last week - she just loved him and told me about the dog she used to have when she was a little girl back in Macedonia who looked very similar to him, though bigger (so yep another whippet ) He has been mistaken for a girl on a few occasions too, one instructor at the local obedience club used to call him a she every single week. Oscar is a reasonably masculine name isn't it????

I get the baby greyhound or whippet query with my iggy all the time. Most people haven't heard of an italian greyhound before. Just have to say though that Oberon is just gorgeous

Please Make Sure Your Dogs Are Okay In The Heat
CBL replied to InspectorRex's topic in General Dog Discussion
Mine too They hate water! Yep mine too. Lilly will occassionally hop in our if we fill it up for her. At the million paws walk last year we stopped with our 3 for a drink at one of the stops along the route. Lilly had a drink and then popped her front feet in the bucket and just stood there Figured she must have had warm toes -
I'm so sorry to hear this RIP Flash

How Does Your Dog Let You Know What They Want?
CBL replied to mutt lover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I can barely see Patch all day, but come 5:30ish he suddenly appears and follows me everywhere - its dinnertime! He will also put his head in my lap and just stare Oscar is the really demanding one. He will whimper, bark and whine when he wants something and if he is really frustrated by me not throwing a ball to him he will jump and push me with his paws. -
Our greyhound Lilly has a mild heart murmur - the vet thinks its about a 2 or a 3. We were just told to look out for signs such as tiring quicker and not wanting to exercise (though she is a greyhound so thats pretty standard!) plus coughing etc. We are thankfully not at the stage where medication is necessary (and hopefully will never get there). We tend to find the heat knocks her more than the other 2 dogs - but she is black too so that doesn't help!

Oooh Lilly would look good in hot pink!
-
They are amazing aren't they? Just skin on skin.
-
Touch wood we have never had a major graze, injury or skin-split yet - however it is bound to happen. Little nicks around the feet and legs is common here though. We have had the greyhound/iggy scream of death before - its not nice, but like others have said, it only happens when they have a fright. The amount of noise that can come from a teeny tiny iggy is amazing
-
Patch comes up relatively calmly for pats, Lilly gets super excited, sometimes gets jumpy and then runs off to grab a toy to show you (but she won't give it). Oscar will run at you at 100 km/h and launch - he usually connects at stomach height. He may only be 7kgs but it feels like 50!
-
Patch does the spin-zoomies too! Its hilarious ;) We also always think we must grab the camera and get footage of it.
-
5 pm is usually zoomie-time in our house. Oscar will do laps of the backyard alone or beg Lilly to chase him. When she does we supervise and will step in when they get too carried away. Patch loves doing zoomies through the house and consequently my floor boards have seen better days.

Ear Infection Getting Worse With Treatment
CBL replied to no longer registered's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poor little thing - sound to me like she needs to be seen by a vet. I would be taking her to a different one. Where abouts are you, maybe someone can recommend another one near you? -
I don't know your dog so I couldn't say. But I know mine and if he was shying away and crying when I scratch behind or touch any part of him, I'd not be satisfied at putting it down to a behaviour issue. Perhaps your Vet is right and is a very good Vet at reading dogs, but if I were in your shoes with my boy, I think I'd be inclined to seek a second opinion. ETA: What's your dog like at touching any other part of him? What's he like when you restrain him by holding him? Does he "cry" like he did/does when you scratched behind his ears, even if he is trying to move away from you? If he does, then it is not an absolute that the ear issue relates to behaviour, but if he doesn't then I would even more strongly suggest that it is not a behavioural issue. Thanks Erny - lots to think about. If only they could tell us exactly what is wrong. The shying away is specific to when I touch his ears (moving his head down and away)- will check between his toes etc as well. Holding and restraining him is fine, the only issue is his ears. He has been examined now by 3 vets at the clinic - one of whom is a family member (and friend) and I know will do all he can to get the correct diagnosis. Will keep going with the pain meds and then see where we are. You are all giving me lots to think about - thanks so much
-
Hi Erny - the screaming at the vets was more when he was looking deep into the ear rather than just handling around the ear flaps - though he did do both. I have been touching his ears alot as the vet suggested in conjunction with the pain meds - I thought he was getting better about it, but this morning he is shying away alot and cried once when I scratched him behind one ear. I am starting to lean towards behavioural but I am not confident.

Just thought I would update this. Went back to the vets after 2 weeks of no improvement. The vet did a thorough examination and poor Patch screamed and cried However, the vet (and another) could find no reason for any pain and so we are wondering whether it is behavioural. He carried on most when I was in the room however when he took him to get another vet to look he barely made a sound (though was unhappy) - it could be that 1. he was putting it on to get sympathy from me or 2. he was so freaked out (very dialated pupils) that he didn't make much noise. So we are trialling him on painkillers for a week and we have to touch and play with his ears a lot. If there is pain then he should get better with us touching his ears, but if it is behavioural then there shouldn't be a change.
