Waiting for confirmation, but it is highly possible that Andy was an ex-rescue dog fostered by a DOLer, who is undertandably devastated. RIP Andy

So sorry PLP. I have had to make the decision too, it is awful and I cried buckets even though I knew it was the right decision. Sending you hugs.

Oh Hannah I am so so sorry. I just saw this thread, have not been on DOL much lately. I can't believe this, last time I saw a post from you he was home and doing ok. I am so upset just reading this, can't imagine how you are feeling. Many hugs coming your way, if there is anything I can do please just ask. RIP Digby, I never met you but I know you were a really special little man.

Yep depending on the dog it can be very hard to do. Luckily my greyhound that has the wound at the moment is the best for things like that, he will not flinch or move a muscle even though it must be painful. Mind you, the last couple of days he has started to try and run away when he sees me get out the bottle of betadine liquid.... but then when I get out some nice roast chicken or ham he comes back One of my fosters, a large wolfhound/dane type cross had a broken leg, had surgery and had external fixatures. I had to redress and clean that every few days, and he was THE biggest sook! I had to get my teenage son to help hold him dwn and I had to sit on him, while my daughter tried to distract him by feeding liver treats! Sounds like you are trying to do the best you can, I hope it heals up without too many problems.

Hi ISH, did the vet talk to you about cleaning the wound out every day? Some of mine have had puncture wounds nd tears in the past, and my vet has recommended giving them a really good clean out each day with either saline or betadine liquid. That is what I am doing at the moment with one of my greyhounds, he was bitten by another dog and had two nasty puncture wounds on his face, which after a couple of days became an open sore (took him to the vet who explained that the skin between the puncture wounds had died and come away ) He is on antibiotics, and as well as swabbing out the wound with betadine every day I am then smearing it with medihoney. My vet swears by this, says he uses it for horses that have torn pieces out of themselves on fencing. I used it before when my wolfhound Bree was desexed and had her rear dew claws removed, she managed to split open the stitches on both legs, so they had to be redressed and cleaned each day and the medihoney applied. They healed very well and quite quickly. Hope that helps! I would be taking her back to the vet for a checkup though.

I have several large breed dogs and am on a tight budget. I don't have time to feed raw, so they are on a dry only diet with chicken carcasses fed about once a week My dogs have all done well on Bonnie working dog (I pay $33 per 20kg bag) except one who has a delicate tummy and he does well on Supercoat, and one greyhound who I can't seem to keep weight on (have been trialling adding some things like eggs and cheese and fish to his dry). Sometimes I get Supercoat instead of Bonnie (slightly cheaper at $28 for 20kg) but the dogs do tend to turn their noses up at it. No difference in poos though. I tried Coprice once and found the dogs were doing HUGE (well huger than usual ) bright yellow poos - ewww! Went to the produce store yesterday and they asked me if I wanted to try a new brand - Dog Pro made by Hypro. I checked the ingredients and the protein to fat ratio etc and it is about the same as Supercoat and Bonnie, and cheaper - only $24 for a 20kg bag. (At the moment we are going through three 20kg bags a fortnight, plus a small bag of Supercoat for my little guy). I bought some and the dogs had it last night and this morning. They all seemed to like it, but I did't like the smell.... Has anyone else tried it?

I usually feed my dogs on Bonnie working dog, I have a lot of large dogs and they mostly seem to do well on it (only two have a different diet). I buy the 20kg bags, but sometimes get the Supercoat working dog food instead as it is a bit cheaper, but my dogs do not seem to like it much. I went to the produce store today and they asked would I like to try this new brand. I had a look at the ingredients and the % of protein etc, and it is roughly the same as Bonnie and Supercoat, but is only $24 per bag (I pay $33 for Bonnie and $28 for Supercoat). Anyway, all the dogs seemed to like it, but I thought it had a bit of a funny smell. Wondering if anyone else has tried it? It is called Dog Pro and is made by Hypro.

So sorry to hear I haven't experieced this myself, but from my reading here on DOL it appears that once two bitches start fighting there is often nothing can be done to stop them and they need to be permanently seperated. Not what you want to hear I know. Hope someone more knowledgeable comes along soon with some positive suggestions for you.

So sorry wizard1. RIP Merlin

Took my 17 month old wolfhound for her first hydrobath two weeks ago (yes she is too big for my bath now). She fitted into the hydrobath at the local dog groomers - maybe there are different sized hydrobaths?

That sounds good shmoo. Do you have a section on visiting pounds - eg washing hands between touching dogs, changing clothes after you leave, foot bath to disinfect shoes etc.

Puppy Training In The Southern Highlands?
Daisy replied to Wolfhound Lover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi WL, well we have more in common than just loving wolfhounds, we even live not too far apart - I am at Goulburn There is an obedience club at Goulburn that meets every Wednesday evening at the showground at 6pm (but it has been too cold for me to go for a while ) I believe that there is a group near Mittagong though, I will try and find out about it for you. -
I have a mastiffxstaffy girl who can clear 5" fences with ease, she doesn't climb or scramble over them, she sails over! I put up lattice fence extensions and she can still get over them. She now has a roofed run for when I am not home.

2yr Old Ex -racing Greyhound Girl
Daisy replied to bluecollie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Wonderful to hear how well she has settled in And good to see another greyhound convert Once you have a grey you will never be without one -
shmoo, maybe you could include advice for those that are unable to set up a purpose built quarantine area. You could work it something along the lines of "It is recommended that a purpose built quarantine area such as that described above be used, however if you are unable to build/access such a facility, the minimum precautions you should take would be....." In a perfect world everyone would have a purpose built facility, but the reality is that not all rescuers will have one.

I use the all-nylon ones and haven't had a problem with them loosening off. I use them for my greyhounds
