i like the sound of this, would like to here what people opinions are about training methods etc. As a dog trainer i use both reward based and check chain training, i beleave every dog is diffrent, and certain training methods suit certain dogs. I feel nomatter what kind of method u use it needs to suit the dogs temperment, etc u wouldn't use hash correction chains on a timid or shy dog, or trying to only use food, toy rewards on a aggressive, very strong willed dog or stubbon dog. not to mention a dog that couldn't care less about the food ur got to give them. but one thing i beleave is PRAISE nomatter what u do the outcome in training should always be injoyable and fun for both dog and handler. For exsample a dog that will not walk on a lose lead, owner does not have the strengh nor the power or voise to get this dog to listen. put on a check chain, make sur eu teach the owner the right way of using them and then get stuck into to some training, make the dog unterstand, be strong use the voise etc, but at the end of any command negitive or rewarding always PRAISE the dogs and play with them after training, so they have good outcome and are happy wanting to learn next training session. At obed club, when i am training my own dogs, people are always saying to me what a smart dog, how do u get him to work so well etc, i tell them it is about the handler.....u have to be confident in ur dog, be happy, excited, full of live, use ur voise if i can't here someone saying goodboy from the other end of the oval, ur not beening loud enough....get ur dogs up and happy, willing and waiting for the next command. Some thing i notice at dog club, is when the intructor is talking to the hole class people just stand there and let there dog do whatever, barking, wanting to play with other dogs next to them, breaking from sits etc......instead of letting them get out of conrol or get bored use that time wisly, i put my dog into a sit stay, drop stay, stand stay or practise healing around me on the spot or just practise watch me...any thing to keep them busy and making them realize that they are working which means actully that for the hole hr ur dog should be listening, obaying and injoying working for u. if there not u a simply not keeping them enfuziastc(sp?) about training. and after the training session is over, play with ur dogs make a huge fuss of them. I get my young boy to give me a high five for a job well done and jumps into my arms.....he love it and always injoys his training sessions. I hartly ever see any one do this with there dogs after training they just all walk to the club house and head for home, and people wonder why they can,t get there dogs to injoy and obey in dog training. sorry for the long post, i have a bad habbit cheers sam

well i have worked with animals all my live apart from working with my partner doing landscape gardening for about 3 yrs( our own business). I haved worked at zoos, with wildlife which apart from dogs is my other passion.....,dog kennels, pounds, lost dogs home, kennels again arrr the list goes on...... but i have learned alot and now am currently trying to run my own business called Wagalot pet care, dog training, dog minding, walking, doggy day care etc,but trying to get my busines up off the ground and successful is hard work, lots to pay out( insurance, atvertising etc) and not much profet...... i don't think there are too many jobs out there working with animals where you get paid a good wage....... its the passion not the money ya in it for........shame really would be nice to get paid lots for something you love doing my friends and family are pressuring me into a job in customs(really would like to work with the sniffer dogs, but i think it is pretty hard to get into unless you aer employed by customs to start with....... but i am umming and arrring.....is this what i want to do or to i want to keep my business going and inprove my training skills by doing the Delta course..... ohhh i don't know....... sorry if i have hijacked cheers Sam..... ps: any one know much about working with sniffer dogs?????????
-
yep i am also thinking about doing this course....... being wanting to do it for years but the price keeps putting me off.......about time i bit my toung and just fork it out cause i know it is a very good course and know a few people that have done it.. at the moment i am trying to run my own pet care business part time and also thinking about trying to get into customs or this course......can't seem to make up my mind what i want to do????? cheers Sam

just a little note...... when using on wounds on animals i have found the skin can change colour, pinks, orange, redish, purpleish and back to pink again....... this is normal, so if you thing the wound is looking a funny colour as it heels, don't be to worryed ........ hope it works cheers Sam.......
-
yep i thing the staff is wonderful I am a wildlife carer and use on wounds all the time, some very bad cases too, such as a possum with its tail half skined, had too stich the skin back where it had been ribbed and then put medi honey all over the hole tail and cover it, had to clean the wound, put honey on, and re dress the wound 2 times a day. with in a few weeks the dressing could come off and the wound was starting to heel.. the little possum loved to eat the honey as well dear little thing. I also get exma and put on my self and works wonders great stuff Sam....

Personal Training: Recommendations
wagalot replied to Tarka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hello all I am not in NSW but in Melbourne, and i do in home training. I have been training dogs for over 10 yrs and are a member of northern obed club. I do puppy training, threw to behavour problem training, i am based in the western burbs but cover all melb metro area......I am only a fairly new business but i garentee you will be happy with my style of training( positive reward based training and trick training) If i can help, give me a buzz cheers Sam......... [email protected] -
yep this is a good thread, always trying to think of new things to put in the kongs. One i really like(or should i say the dogs like ) is cheese, bits of smacko, liver treats and dog kibble, soak in a bit of boiling water or put into micawave(but i don't have one). then put in thr frighe for awhile and waller...... another one is VIP meat role and liver treats or smackos and small teeth biccies al mixed together and then harding up in the frezzer. Sam....

if you all think they are so good please explain why they are banned... and don't tell me its just cause they look nasty... Some of you have asked why i use check chains. Well i don't use them to pull the dog around i use food or toys to get the dogs attendion and praise when they stop pulling i find you only need to give the sightest tuck on the lead and the dog will respond, this is based on beginner dogs. if people find that these prong collors work for them, because there dogs are series pullers, thats great go ahead and use them. but for young dogs that are just learning the art of obedience i find they are unnessary. another reason for check chains or what i use the most nylon soft correction collor, is perly so dogs don't slip ther collor off and get away from me, when your out walking other peoples dogs you have to be very carefull that nothing happens to them and walking dogs on normal collors can be scary if they get off.
-
sorry i don't like them, and yes i have seen and tryed them. I am a dog trainer and have been for over 10 years, i have and always will use positive reward based training, i do use check chains, and yes if thay are used the right way thay are fine. but if you jurk your poor dog about then its going to do some damage to me PICHING, PULLING AND JURKING :scaredyour poor dog about is not positve, happy training.
