I have tried a bag to see what it was like but whilst the dogs enjoy it, I was dissapointed with the product after soaking it as per the manufacturers instructions. All I ended up with was water in a bowl with the food floating in it! I thought it was meant to reconstitute which to me meant I should have ended up with the product in its pre-freeze dried state. I have to say that probably a 1/4 of the bag was just dust also and this still didnt absorb any water. Maybe I got a dodgy bag, would be interested to hear how others find it reconstitutes.

Unfortunately they are no longer imported into Australia and havent been for quiet a while now.

Chicken Affecting Hormone Levels
k9katz replied to Zali Lane's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Nope not in America, hormones are not approved for chickens there either. -
Our old boy Bennie also got a Kong stuck on his jaw just like your dog, we were on our way to the vet when he managed to pull it off with his paws but we couldnt budge it before that. I have found the Everlasting fun balls to be the best toys in so much as they are VERY hard for the dogs to damage and being a far more flexible material, if they were to get their jaw inside one of the holes ( and this has happened with mine from time to time) its easy for the dog to pull it off.

Here is an article that you can give him, although he should already have it by now. It came out yesterday. http://www.apvma.gov.au/news_media/news/20...on_position.php I decided to just have the C3 this year on my dogs and my vet was more than happy to do this for me, even though he doesnt routinely do it for his clients. I just asked, he also gave me the vaccination certficate stating their next booster was due in 3 years time.

I wonder if you are thinking of Orijen? Artemis is imported from the USA and has never had any recalls whatsoever. You can be assured that the quality of the ingredients in the entire range of Artemis Pet Foods are exceedingly high, all proteins are human grade and every batch is subjected to the most stringent quality control parameters. Most importantly, with regards to Australia, NONE of the products are subjected to Gamma Irradiation or treatment of any kind. Judith Strachan. Artemis Pet Food Australia.

Hhmm sounds to me like her current diet suits her just fine. Not every dog is a guts over food or has consistently hard poops. With the miriad of problems GSDs have I would count myself lucky at having such a healthy dog.

Hi Chocolate, The recommended feed guide for a 10kg dog is approx 135g per day so if you bought a 13.6kg bag it would cost $1.189 per day. $1.32 per day for a 6.8kg bag and $2.20 per day for a 1.8kg bag. ( all based on RRP) The feeding guides are however just that, a guide. I suggest feeding the recommended amount for two weeks whilst monitoring the dogs weight and then adjusting accordingly. Each dog has a different metabolism so it is important to go by how the dog looks as some may need more and some less. Hope this helps:)

Can you pm me the stores you would prefer to buy from and I will follow up with them, even if they wont stock it maybe they will just get a bag in for you on a regular basis. I'm sure we can sort something out to keep them on it:)

Ill give pro plan a look but the pet supply shops more or less say its not up to them to chase the food its up to the company to (Artemis Australia) contact them and coming from a similar industry i agree if you want your product out there you have to push it ... Anyway I have 2 bags at present and when they are getting low if there are no stockists out here California Natural it is......... Thanks for the views on the food I'm sorry you feel this way Dave, and sorry that the Pet Shop feels that way also. Its a shame your dogs are going to have to give up a food that they obviously do so well on. We do have a postal service for customers who cant obtain our food in their local pet store, and I have offered to post the food to you directly, we ship food all over Australia to places as far as Alice Springs and outback WA. For those people who cant accept delivery at home we ship to their workplace, as will any of our online suppliers. Our aim is to make sure that every dog and cat in Australia can be fed Artemis and there are also certain pet shops that we will just not put our food into. Judith -Artemis Pet Food Australia.

Both Fresh Mix Adult & Fresh Mix Maximal are equal in quality, the only time 1 is better than the other depends on the needs of a particular dog.If you have chosen to feed a BARF diet and adhear to the principles of that then you should choose the Maxiimal. If you are happy to include some quality grains in your dogs diets then you could choose the Fresh Mix Adult. You could even alternate between the 2 diets. I also wanted to mention that the single, most common cause of softer stools that a few dogs have experienced when eating Artemis is caused by over feeding. Simply cutting back 1/4 to 1/2 a cup per day alleviates the problem. The fact that Beet Pulp is not included in the Artemis range should not be a factor, Beet Pulp is a moderately fermentable fibre that is added to give bulk to the stools, Artemis chooses to use chicory root instead of beet pulp which is also a moderately fermentable fibre and prebiotic to promote digestive health but will still promote smaller firmer stools. I hope this info helps.

Veggiedent Recall In Australia By Vibrac
k9katz replied to CooperDog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would like to see a blanket ban on all irradiation of pet products and ingredients whether they are imported or produced here. -
What I meant was to make sure that you dont skip days, if the jabs are due 1 week apart, then make sure it is 1 week exactly and not 1 week and 1 day. I presume that different programs would be similar. For example with the SPOT one you build up the amount you give every other day for the first 15 days and then the spaces get further apart as you go from each set ( 3 to complete the course) until the maint is monthly. All was done through my vet. Non invasive and cheaper than intra dermal. Blood is sent to the USA for assesment and anaylsis and includes food allergies, intra dermal, I believe, does not, hence the need for food elimination diets. Here is the website for the SPOT http://www.vetallergy.com
-
Started 28/9/07 ....still on the maint schedule and will continue lifelong as I would not want to go back to how she was. Like Elfin, I have a different dog today, happy and hairy LOL. My girl Trinta has to have 2 vials of the treatment so 2 injections a month due to so many allergies. Did you end up doing the blood test ( SPOT ) ? My vet says he has much more success with this than the intra dermal which is interesting. My main advice to you would be to be absolutly vigilant with the timing of injections, especially at the beginning. Best of luck with it all. Trinta has also been eating Artemis for 9 months now and has had no problems despite having some ingredients in there that she had tested positive to. The only reason I tried the food was because I knew that if she did react, I could simply stop the food. I had tried her on raw but she just didnt do well on it.
-
Or maybe it was me:) If you look back at my previous posts you will read all about Trinta's allergies and how well she is doing on the injections. As others have said, not all dogs will respond so well but its certainly worth the try if it gives your dog even 50% relief. I believe you need to foolow the course exactly for the best results. Which blood test did you have done as the one we did (SPOT) gives you food allergies also.

For example in giant breed pups, we grow them nice and slow on low-mid protein %, grow too fast and you may end up with growth issues. In small-medium sized dogs I'm not sure they have the same issues with protein levels as pups? The original poster did not say if her dog was a Large Breed Puppy, merely that she thought she was feeding too much protein, however it seems to have sparked a debate about too much protein in the growth stage of Large Breed Puppies. For those who are interested in some factual information, read this link and follow up on the actual studies that have been performed. http://www.sonic.net/~cdlcruz/GPCC/library...d%20puppies.pdf

I would be interested to know why you think you are giving too much protein? It is not so much the amount of protein that is a concern but the QUALITY of the protein. The higher the quality of the protein, the more digestable it is and therefore the dog's system does not have to work as hard. The liver processes the protein and the waste is filtered through the kidneys. It stands to reason that if you feed a diet high in poorer quality protein then the dogs system could be put at risk from the extra stress needed to process the waste. A diet that is high in quality, highly digestable protein will put less stress on the dog. Bottom line, a food that has a protein content of 30% and has an 85% digestabilty, will be far better for your dog than a food that has a protein content of 30% and has a 50% digestabilty.

Epiotic Ear Cleaner Whats A Better Alternative
k9katz replied to mokhahouse's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I found that Epiotic irritated my dogs ears so switched to Bayer Clean Ear Solution which is derived from natural materials and contains no alcohol. It is great for routine ear cleaning, is non irritating to mucous membranes and non - allergenic. -
Up until a couple of years ago Interceptor did heartworm, and all intestinal worms EXCEPT tapeworm. When they changed it to Interceptor SPECTRUM it then included tapeworm also so all bases are covered. It is possible that the notes you have kvb were written before the product was changed and that is why they were giving a 3 monthly tapeworm tablet I suspect. Sentinel SPECTRUM does the same as interceptor but also includes flea control ( note it will only prevent fleas from breeding, it wont kill adult fleas if they are already present) So to sum up as far as worming control goes, both products cover heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm Also worth mentioning is that Canimax covers all these worms also but not the flea control and their recommended dosage is every 6 weeks whereas the others are monthly. Hope that helps.

Another Question... Best Cooling Mat?
k9katz replied to Kelly_Louise's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Another vote here for the cool champions. I have both the mat & the coats and they work a treat for my Shepherds. I tried a gel filled one before and when the dogs laid on it, gel ouzed out of the stitching seams! Yukky & heavy as hell. After squeezing out the cool champion, wipe with a towel also and its important to make sure the correct side is to the dog. Mine never get wet from using them. -
Hi there, I've done you a comparison using grams as that will give you a better guide, the products have different density so 1 cup of 1 weighs more than the other. Feeding Guides Eagle Pack Senior 332 grams per day Artemis Maximal 324 grams per day Artemis Medium/Large Senior 310 grams per day All the above based on a 32kg dog. Days Bag will Last Eagle Pack Senior 45 days (15kg bag) Artemis Maximal 42 days (13.6kg bag) Artemis Medium/Large Senior 44 days (13.6kg bag) Cost Per Day - Based on current RRP Eagle Pack Senior $2.76 per day Artemis Maximal $2.66 per day Artemis Medium/Large Senior $2.37 per day Hope that helps you I've included the Artemis Medium / Large Breed Senior for your reference also.

Elimination Diet (for Allergies)
k9katz replied to sandgrubber's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Actually my vet really wanted me to do the blood test as he had already had sucess with others, the food was only an outside chance. Once we got her on the desensitizing injections she made a tremendous improvement. She is now also able to eat a dry food without side effects and is a different dog. No cortizone now or polaramine and a healthy coat and happy dog. -
Elimination Diet (for Allergies)
k9katz replied to sandgrubber's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A food elimination diet will only work if your dog is ONLY allergic to food. I have a dog who had severe allergies and I did an elimination diet, feeding her only Hills ZD and NOTHING else for 8 weeks. It didnt make a scrap of difference, would you think then the dog had no food allergies? I had the 'spot' allergy blood test done and it came back with all sorts of food allergies along with many grasses and environmental allergies. Just eliminating the foods she is allergic to would not have helped as she was still reacting to other things. -
If using bins to store food, its always advisable to wash the bin out each time before emptying the new bag in. When you get to the bottom, there are always some crumbs that will have oils etc on them which eventually could go rancid and taint the new food. It stands to reason that if you keep topping up with new food, the old stuff could eventually ruin the whole lot. I cant understand why its going off if you are keeping it in the bag though, that is odd.
