Rule 4: No denigration of pure bred dogs Speaks for itself. This is a primarily a pure bred dog forum (ANKC recognised breeds) and was created to promote and discuss these breeds. If you don't think pure bred dogs make the perfect pets, then maybe this forum is not for you. I am happy to delete my comments, if they are not allowed? :) I thought this whole thread is classified as "unnecessary cross breed discussion" given its been done to death (rule 7) which is also banned though? -

Thanks everyone for all the tips – got the look I was after! :D Groomed her on the table this time with no issues I can probably take a little bit more off the top but she gets a tidy up every week or so (nails, paw pads and eye hair etc) so will do it then I think the main issue was the beard – when its short she looks very cheery (and I love it)! :) And if its long (and longer on the visor too) she looks a bit serious to me -

I know a lot of people with oodles (first cross, pet shop ones too, as well as multigen and reputable breeder ones), there are heaps of meet up groups for them and they have a lot of instagram accounts too :p But i havent heard of this disappointment at all...? everyone seems to adore their oodle, there are very few of them in rescues near me (which have a lot of staffys, greyhounds and bully breeds) and there are even waitlists for them, if anyone finds a lab x poodle cross i know about 5 people who have been looking in rescues for one and i will send send them the links~ :) Even the ones which arent completely "non shedding" and 'non doggy smelling" shed/smell very little in comparison to their non poodle parent and their owners still love them :) -
Not exactly a reincarnation story but my first dog died four years ago, her name was Lilly and we had her cremated and scattered some of the ashes in the garden and planted a peace lily plant there, it never flowered for four years and i was sure that it would just die so i tried not to assign too much value to it The day i brought my new puppy home a few months ago it flowered for the first time :) too beautiful a coincidence <3 not really a believer but I felt she was sort of giving me permission to move on because I had felt so guilty for years about gettting the new pup Your two are adorable! ????

How Do You Prevent Fears? Like Fireworks?
mowgliandme replied to mowgliandme's topic in General Dog Discussion
Mine seems to LOVE loud noises in general, pots falling, people yelling -she's there looking cheerful! In that horrible obedience class, the instructor decided to demonstrate a loud "uh ah" which was meant to be a correction, all the dogs turn around looking worried she's sitting there trying to see what all the fun is about...oops That's probably because we are very softly spoken in our house and the only time we would be even a tiny bit louder is if we are playing with her -

Thanks corvus :) shes not really a foodie so doesn't tend to get very excited over it? (but still likes working for it though) she gets more excited with playing with toys/or a ball...? Apart from that shes very mellow so i think id have trouble getting her too excited -

I agree with sandgrubber too! I'm not saying these are what you should do/should have done etc - im was trying to find out if there is a way to prevent them? :) At some point its out of my control (my dog can have a bad experience when im not even home) and genetic too i have found the treats for calmness or obedience when seeing new distractions is more for her being able to work with me in all settings and neutralisation rather than a "phobia preventing idea" -

Yep i got that one after your recommendation! :) did that with her a while back but she was very neutral to all the noises on there at the time, may have another go at it today though -

We do the same thing with thunderstorms - so far she doesn't care at all about them! :) Funnily enough she is really good with loud crashing, banging noises, renovations and motorbikes etc the couple of times she's barked have been at really quiet noises, like a door slowly moving and when the shower head sometimes slowly moves down and a few drops of water come out? Showed her both the things and she stopped barking and it hasn't happened again so far - I may play sound CDs super quietly if it continues though -

Thanks everyone :) she's pretty happy, confident and calm 99% of the time! Ive found it pretty useful so far in terms of neutralising her to some things too, so she doesn't bat an eyelid at bikes, scooters or prams etc She does very occasionally get a fright and bark at odd noises but seems to be mostly if they catch her completely by surprise or if they're really odd noises that even i haven't heard before! She also went through a fear period where she barked at random things that have been around for ages...like a pot plant in the garden or the bag of dog food, but she stopped and explored it if i went up to it and said "thats not scary is it?!" in a happy voice :) Oh no - i've heard that even with great socialisation they can switch down the track at certain things - heard of few dogs doing that with thunderstorms as they got older -

Thanks for the tips showdog :) yeah i agree the visor and the beard are the main differences for the face shape She pretty much did stay still for the whole time, I think she only moved away once and then she came straight back :) She's very happy for me to hold her by the muzzle or beard hairs and will also rest her chin in my hand until released so i think shes pretty easy to keep safe while being groomed? My aim for her is to love grooming - it didn't take me much longer than 2 hours ...maybe 15 minutes or so longer but the hair drying took the longest (and then having to vaccuum the house :p) , everything else was pretty quick- think i may need a better hair dryer :S I will progress to the table next time with mirrors though now that shes comfortable with it all! Re: hair texture type...its normally a wavy fleece, but its pretty straight after being blow dried (in the first picture) second/third picture is a few days of adventuring after the groom because i forgot to take one that day -

karen15 I'll look into if the Geib blade will work on my andis clippers - sounds like its the best one! :) I havent quite figured out which shape i like most yet...i probably prefer the look of the more pyjama leg (straight down) but she gets pretty muddy when we go camping so its not the most practical for us, so she's got a bit more leg shape this time (bit drumstick like) but i'm totally smitten by her and think she looks good all the time :p Ive also got a table that i can use for grooming in the future but i really wanted her to have the option of moving away in case she wasn't liking the clippers -
My puppy isn’t really the fearful type and I’m probably an overly positive socialiser…so if theres something new she hasn’t seen or heard before - I try to give her treats before she has time to react to it and form an opinion of it So right now there are fireworks going on, she's getting treats for either working with me on obedience/tricks or for just ignoring them. We do the same thing with sirens or even dogs on the street because a lot of dogs near me are very vocal and reactive and i don't want her to try to join in on the idea of lunging, barking and pulling at the leash to get to them. (Which she doesn't - she looks at me whenever theres a dog now) Is this what i should be doing or do you do recommend something else? I just want her to grow up to be a very happy confident dog that isnt scared of fireworks and thunderstorms or anything else for that matter :)

Thanks Gruf <3 ... i even have plastic scrubs - the things you remember afterwards! I groomed her on the floor over two days (because i was just getting her used to clippers and standing still first)...ended up having to vacuum the whole house too because i let her run around while i packed up Im really looking forward to next time now that i've got a little bit of extra smarts :) Time to redo the washing! -

Another grooming question...how do you get all the clipped hair off your clothes? I put the clothes i was wearing when i clipped her in the wash with my other clothes and now theyre all covered in dog hair too but most of its stuck on the grooming pants - in hindsight i should have at least brushed the hair off but it didnt occur to me at the time And one more :D I still want to get a blade #30 for next time (used blade 10 this time) any brand recommendations? its a Andis agc2 super speed clipper, and Wahl stainless steel attachment combs...is Oster the best (then i can have one thing of each brand!) or will andis or wahl be better because they match my other grooming equipment? -

Wow thanks so much for the annotations and photos Gruf! :) Will do that as soon as i give her a bath- right now its soo hot so she is being a sandy wet puppy jumping between the sand pit and her clam pool - definitely don't want sand in my brand new clippers -

She really is. To be honest I don't notice much of a difference between the two head shots. I think you've done a great job especially with making her comfortable with grooming. Well done! Thank you - she is a little cute! :) Counter-conditioning and desensitisation are my sort of speciality... so she is in love with all the grooming things and will come running if anyone is cutting their nails (I used human nail clippers on her for the first few months) or if i pick up her toothbrush, scissors, combs and now hair clippers  -

That would be awesome Gruf...yep ive got all the blade combs (8 of them :p) Ive only done her face with scissors so far - will have to put on my brave hat to use the clippers on her face - the first pic was done entirely with scissors (not by me though) -
So ive had my first go at grooming and im pretty happy with the body - its not perfect but it was both mine and her first time with clippers (she was beautifully behaved and loved it!) ~i've since tidied up the bit near her back right leg in the photo where she is lying down :) Im having trouble making her face the shape i want it How can i make her face more round like the one sitting near the door without the bandana? I think its too long looking at the moment...Ive probably cut off too much from some places and too little from others but cant figure out how to make it look like that again

I Know This Has Probably Been Done To Death...
mowgliandme replied to poochmad's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think there is always going to be a divide here, on this forum in particular because it is a purebred dogs forum. However I think the main reason people promote purebred dogs is because of good breeders who know what they are doing. The ones with health guarantees, pedigrees, lifetime of breeder support, breeders that socialise the puppies well and know what they are doing: breeding for health, purpose, temperament and conformation. This is the main reason I advocate people stay away from pet shops and puppy farms and most cross breed breeders. But having said all that, there is not enough of these well bred puppies for the demand (either pure bred or cross bred) so there is going to be people who exploit it and keep dogs in horrible conditions, and breed unsocialised, unhealthy dogs etc until people are made aware of the differences... In terms of marketing to the general public: I think there should be more of a push for good breeders, breeders who do things like puppy culture, there is an amazing thread of a breeder doing everything wonderfully with Rottweilers! :) I don’t think its fair to blame a good breeder for the obvious spike in popularity of Rottys after her amazing puppies go out to represent them in the world. If crappy back yard breeders or puppy farms start breeding rottys because of these beautiful examples we definitely wouldn’t blame the breed or the breeder, like we are doing with oodles. -

I was just trying to say that most people aren't really that fussed on whether they are ever recognised as a breed or not :) I definitely agree on the distinction needed though between those two types of breeders, i also object to the conditions that mass cross breeders keep their dogs in! -
I Know This Has Probably Been Done To Death...
mowgliandme replied to poochmad's topic in General Dog Discussion
I doubt oodle owners really care about whether its called a labradoodle or if the cobberdog gets recognised as a breed or not – the breeders seem to care about that the most. I also doubt that they're super interested in fancying up their dog by using a designer name, its just easy to use, its just slang and most people that ask about a dog understand what it is rather than explaining its “multiple generations of Labrador retriever and miniature poodle crosses with some spaniels in there too” By all means hate them and consider them ugly... but I think they’ll be popular whether purebred owners hate them or not, but they are less likely to be abused dogs if there was more of a push for reputable breeders. The breeder of my puppy actually encouraged us to sign the purebreddogs.org.au petition saying that she supported their values. -

mowgliandme replied to poochmad's topic in General Dog Discussion
I second this too :) i have one too (cobberdog/multigeneration australian labradoodle/and i'm not fussed if you call her a mutt/anything else for that matter!) and i don't believe anyone could describe her as stupid or untrained or nutty I spent at least 5 months researching breeds and and 4 months researching and contacting breeders (i exposed a few puppy farms while i was at it too) There are breeders out there who are breeding for the betterment of that "type of dog"/breed (even though its not an official one) just like some purebreed breeders. They also health test extensively, socialise the puppies, do ENS, arent puppy farms, take into account temperament before breeding and choosing a home for a puppy, will rehome the puppy if the owner cant take care of it, really care about which homes their puppies go to and provide a lifetime of ongoing support as well as genetic guarantee. etc.
