My previous dog has rescued my grandmother twice, with no training at all! My grandma used to live with us and was sometimes unsteady on her feet, she would go for short walks around the block and once she fell over at the end of the street and couldnt get back up. My dog kept on whining out the front window (something she had never done before) until i took her outside and she took me to my grandma. I have no idea how she knew, grandma was very softly spoken and I dont know how she would have heard her from more than 10 houses away! Years later we had a similar incident happened with grandma falling over in the backyard and she kept running between grandma and me until we we could rescue her~ Current dog has only been useful at teaching me to pick up after myself as otherwise she will steal my socks for attention :P

i personally wouldnt have an aversive on (prong collar) if there was any chance that I could get frustrated enough to use it! I train mostly with shaping... I used to get frustrated until I tried to have people shape me to do simple behaviours (and tried on other people) - it is incredibly difficult even getting someone to lift their left hand or walk in a circle with marking and rewarding behaviour - i'm surprised that our dogs manage to learn anything at all when people can barely do it! Trying it on myself made me realise how hard it would be for them - so if my dog is not getting something, I: reward her effort and attempts, make it even simpler/take it back a level of difficulty go back to doing something she is great at praise her for working so hard for me when i don't even speak her language am just grateful she's wants to play my silly games and learn tricks with me, give her a cuddle we play tug/fetch and i think about how to break it down to even smaller components, or get the right level of arousal (thinking is harder if youre too excited) before attempting again Oh and letting go of the "rush" to train something, progress not perfection! Theres a quote that says "if a flower doesn't grow, you correct the environment, not the flower"

Theoretically you could bring eco-friendly bags or a washable box to the butcher when buying the meat? Depends on the quantities and where you buy it~

Haha @Scrappi&Monty she is always just a little bit cheeky! Monty must have been in the Christmas spirit a bit early Me too @JulesP I think the one i go to right now definitely would, but they would actually end up being more expensive/time consuming than the patties right now!~

A little bit of an update: she has transitioned to mostly big dog barf patties and is loving it! She still gets raw meaty bones each week and some additional tasty bits and bobs occasionally (sardines, cottage cheese, eggs) and a tiny bit of dry food I have to actually pick up her food bowl when she's done as otherwise she keeps jumping on it and then looking at me expectantly to fill it up again - she never really used to be into dry food unless it was in a treat toy or if she was doing tricks for it~ One happy dog!

I wash my dog in the shower with the removable shower head For her face i reduce the water pressure slightly, gently hold her (long floppy) ear down and spray on her muzzle gently then shampoo and rinse in the same way. For the top of her head i try to direct the water down her neck and move her ears forward out of the way slightly. She loves having a shower and hasn't had any ear issues with this method - but if she didn't like water on her face id probably try the face-washer and diluted baby shampoo method?

Sorry @PossumCorner that wasn't meant to be a slight against ALL pet carers - I am also a professional pet carer btw~ I, personally, do find it hard to trust someone with my dog after hearing such stories - the above lady from Signal Station Dog walking has 4.6 stars on Facebook (only 5 reviews though). IF i was looking for someone i would want good reviews, insurance, pictures and trust - but even in regards to pictures: I was at my local park a few weeks ago with my dog and a lady came in with a van of 6 dogs (none of which were hers), she let them run around in the park for no longer than 6 minutes, did less than 1/2 a lap of the oval, all while taking photos and angrily yelling at dogs to hurry up then bundled them back up in the van... I'm pretty sure the owners would have received 'happy snaps' of their dogs at the park and probably paid for a lot longer than 6 minutes of park time! (yes those are assumptions) I definitely don't think all pet carers are like that! I just think choosing one you trust with your dog is not easy

What is the difference between pet meat and human meat suppliers? Ive only seen one so far and its a bit far to go every week~ Is it just regular meat that has been frozen past the human consumption date? or is it a different quality of meat (more hearts and less muscles)? Does it have preservatives or additives not allowed for people? I occasionally buy Mowgli meat or mince but i cook it within hours and only keep it for a few days in the fridge

oh wow that is quite cheap... the one near me has cheap(ish) bones? about $2 for a bag but theyre not very meaty ones or $4 for two meaty bones (two lamb necks or marrow bones or spine) i'm not sure about the price of offcuts as they arent displayed - the $10 a kilo stuff is referring to thighs drumsticks and mince type meats

Thank you everyone - at the moment i think i'll go with the Big Dog patties and my usual additions of bones/veggies/yogurt etc good ideas @Scrappi&Monty If i was doing it myself from the supermarket id blend and freeze it or would go to a regular butcher that cuts/minces it for me~ May i know how much you pay on average for raw meat per kilo? The big dog patties ($7.56/kg) are actually cheaper than the butcher near me! where even chicken starts at about $10/kg...

So i think Big Dog Barf it may be for now - if i toughen up then maybe i'll do raw on my own down the track! One question about these: they have ground up bone in them already, so can you still give raw meaty bones (for dental health) as well as patties or would it mess up the ratio of calcium/phosphorus etc?

yikes 'elbow deep in meat and offal' is really not selling it to me right now! I am a bit of a sook and will probably faint if i was dissecting organs /cutting stuff up myself - so was hoping that i'd just buy 65grams of liver and pop it in the bowl and not think about it! as always... a little bit too optimistic!

hmmm i was hoping to get the overall calculations right, buy once a week and then add it to her bowl as I go along, mixing it up week to week? (This is basically how I feed myself too) I’m just not one of those organised people who will prep and pack meals like parents do for kids… (i may do it once or twice and then forget about it)

My dog is 9.6kg, 1.5 year old and I’d like to transition her to a “mostly” raw diet now that she’s past the main growing phase - would someone be able to check through my calculations? Currently she eats a good quality dry food (taste of the wild, ivory coat or meals for mutts), supplemented with raw meaty bones (mostly lamb necks or chicken drumsticks), raw vegetables, cooked eggs and some treats (salmon fudge, ivory coat, blackdog, or cooked meat). Her ratio of fresh to dry is probably somewhere between 15%: 85%. I would like her to have the ratio 80% fresh, 20% dry. I’d still like to maintain some dry food as I can’t always take raw food when going away camping and she loves treat/puzzle toys. She has always been pretty squarely in the middle of feeding charts so I’m guessing that she will need 2.5% of her body weight but I will adjust it if need be~ So according to my calculations: for a 9.6kg dog, at 2.5% x 7 a week and 80% of diet = 1.34kg of raw food a week. As it is, in addition to her dry food she currently eats about 2 eggs a week, 2-3 carrots a week, an apple and either 400grams lamb neck or 200g of chicken drumstick (alternating most weeks). First, do I include the fruits/vegetables and eggs in this 1.34kg? Two eggs ~100grams Are the fruits/vegetables just considered extra? (id say she eats 200grams of carrots, an apple (80grams) and small bits of other fruits/vegetables over a week - should I reduce them? Currently giving them to her because she seems to need extra fibre (otherwise she gets anal gland issues) and she likes them. Secondly: bones - so for 10% bone, she would need ~130grams of bone a week According to a calculator lamb necks and chicken drumsticks are around 30-35% bone. So 400-460grams of raw meaty bones a week should cover it? Third, liver and other organ meats: 130 grams a week…so 65grams of liver and 65grams of whatever else kidneys? Two questions: 1) Can you buy this in such small amounts? (Sorry for the annoying questions I’m vego so never bought these things before ) 2) Can I give this over just a couple of meals at the beginning of the week? Or does it need to be spread evenly throughout? So theoretically if i include the eggs (and no vegetables) per week - i would need: 400-450grams raw meaty bones 100grams eggs 65grams liver 65grams kidney? 660-700grams of additional meat Does this sound approximately right to people who feed raw? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I disagree with calling 000 over such an incident but at the same time, most dog owners i've met are clueless about the rules of off-leash areas or public beaches where dogs are allowed. No control over their dog, not watching their dog and sitting on their phone, letting their dog jump on other people and animals, justifying their dogs behaviour such as humping or aggression or stealing from people (you shouldn't have brought treats to the park), letting dogs bully others, not calling their dogs away when asked etc We tend to avoid them at peak times and have a few where i feel owners are typically more knowledgeable and considerate and ask before letting their dogs come up to others (people and dogs) Most parks and beaches are just public areas even though many dog owners tend to think of them as "dog parks" or "dog beaches" and they are for everyone to enjoy, people with dogs, kids, people playing sport, people jogging, skateboarding etc not just "let your dog loose on the public areas" I'd also be all in favour of people passing a test before they can own a dog~

So sad and I hear it all the time~ whenever i mention I have a dog (that I adore and train and play with) and that she goes on adventures with me - people comment on theirs and its almost always so disheartening. "He's just untrainable, difficult to handle, he's an outdoor only dog because he's to stupid to know he cant piss in the house, my dog is dominant, he think's he's top dog because he jumps on me when i get home, I cant take him anywhere." Some people don't even play/interact their dogs other than to give them food, water and vet visits and then whinge that its the dogs fault for not being perfectly well behaved

This is going to be a really stupid question but is it all about recalls? Or is there other stuff in there too? I've got a 100% happy recall away from barking at possums in the backyard and away from other dogs/pretty much everything... (it took 2-3 calls though when we saw a rabbit when we were out exploring and once saw a mouse on the street - both of these are once offs) but i don't have rabbits/mice nearby to practise with at home...? Would it still be useful for such situations? Is Its Your Choice a separate program to Recallers or part of it? Ideally I would like Mowgli to choose not to bark at possums every night, she will definitely come back each time i call her but i end up just closing the doggy door after recalling her a few times. Once the door is closed she doesn't care about them anymore.
