Has Anyone Had To Amputate A Dogs Leg?
Over It replied to Mushaka's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi L&L My first thought was also a shoe or wrapping the foot to protect it and encourage usage - however IMO this will only work BEFORE he is fully into the habit of lifting his foot/leg. Otherwise it will take longer for him to realise its not as painful to walk on his leg. Other than that - if you know how much the amputation will be, could you compare it to re constructive surgery? My sister's dog got out of her yard and hit by a car. Everyone thought she'd have to have her back leg removed - however I ended up asking if it was possible to try reconstructing her hip and leg first. The dog ended up coming from Bundaberg down here to Brisbane and she had her surgery here with my vet. It was a success (lots of glue/staples/pins and permanent metal brackets drilled into her bones) as well as 6 months with a metal brace and pins on the outside of her leg... The hard part was keeping her activity down while she was in her pins & bracket... whenever she would run she'd kick the back leg out to the side and hobble along on 3 legs. She has fully recovered, outside uglies were removed and to look at her now you wouldn't know she has pins/braces on the inside. It was a success and only and extra $150 more than the amputation. Its a thought you could consider and discuss with your vet. Good luck with whatever you end up deciding -
That's an awesome job Freckles.... Well done

Check out the website. They have an evening primrose shampoo and a couple of other shampoos and dietary supplements for dogs with skin conditions. Check out the testimonials too - there is a great shot of a dog that was suffering from a skin irritation - he looks so much better now ETA: Link

No chance They had previously shaved the pants off ALL my dogs (as groomers do to pet dogs to prevent dags, etc) and after this time I had explained to them they are show dogs and to PLEASE never clip them ANYWHERE without my permission. When they shaved the pants, they had also done the underside of my CKCS ears I only ever took them to the groomers if they needed a bath, I didn't have time, etc... I always groom my dogs myself for the Show Ring. For whatever reason, they thought they were doing me a favour. He always had light knotting in his tail, however I always brush him every second day at worst (he likes to roll around on grass, bed, gardens, driveway, anywhere! and this causes knots) I comb the knots out quite easily (though it can be time consuming) there would have been no way it was matted. Oh well - too late now... I just have to try and focus on fixing the problem (I ordered my Royal Jelly Shampoo yesterday )

Thanks guys - will try tonite... I'm a bit of a n00b for PS

What ??? Why on earth would they need to use clippers on a BC at all ? I KNOW :p Needless to say I was very vocal when I saw it (they know I'm a Breeder/Showie). And we've never been back despite their offer of free grooming for 3 months, etc. He had such a nice tail :'( now it looks really short and makes his body look box-y.

Is LSA the linseed mix? From memory is it Linseed, Sunflower & Almond? If so what ratio/where to buy, etc?? Last year the "groomers" (I use the term loosely) used the clippers on my BC boy's tail... it still hasn't grown back to its original state... will try the shampoo though (Thanks )

HELP PLEASE :p I'm making a pic to put on some stubby coolers for my Dad (uber Army guy) and this is what I have so far... but my problem is that the Hat doesn't line up with the Face (nose in particular) Does anybody know how I can rotate it or "tweak" it to make it look more natural?? Thanks to anyone who can help! ETA: That is the best "Body" I could find - if anyone has something else I could use I'd be forever grateful

When To Start Basic Training
Over It replied to Kaos Central's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
We start training our puppies before they leave for their new homes... and any other pups that come to live with us - training starts from day one. Especially if you have a very confident, outgoing pup like our new BC who is trying to pull the ropes! They're like little sponges - the more you can get in the better you will be in the long run (as long as you aren't expecting too much or flooding the poor little baby!) We start out simple and once they start to get the hang of what is expected (the point when we begin to introduce a verbal command) we can start the learning phase of a new command. Then we can mix the commands up and really test the pup. The key is to be patient and give plenty of praise - always end on a good note and reward every attempt that is closer to the final goal.
