  1. Not sure - I would probably try ringing "All Natural Vets" at Russel Lea and asking them. www.naturalvet.com.au or 9712 5844 Please let us know if you do.
  2. Is this similar to the one you have TB? http://www.petsplus.com.au/pet-shop.asp?id=684
  3. Many thanks for that - I'm just disappointed that I didn't get to go as I have been led to believe that it might be one of the last times he travels out here, but I could be wrong. You might be interested in his loose lead walking technique is on his website.
  4. I heard him speak at the APDT Conference in 2007 and was surprised (but pleased) that he was more "old school" than many people's "purely positive" image of him suggests - I got the impression that he was very purely positive at one point, but has evolved since then. I unfortunately wasn't able to make it this year - would you be able to expand on the things I've quoted above? I'm afraid I do not understand what "instructive" reprimands are? Did he say why he is pro to putting the cue before the behaviour when luring? I've been pondering something similar recently (since I dabble in clicker training, I've been taught to get the behaviour first) but have found recently that my target (tin lid) has become my cue and I'm having trouble getting a behaviour on command and am wondering if it would have been different if I started with the command first... but then think, well, if I do that, perhaps my command will be associated with a "less than perfect" form of the behaviour than I want... then I just think I think too much! Care to share his other "less controversial" techniques you're going to try??? Please??? Doggie dictionary??? Are these commands that the dog knows, or is it something else?
  5. I think a lot about this, but also a lot about my timing - exactly what am I rewarding. I see owners who bribe, I see owners who under reward, but my biggest gripe is owners who's timing is so far out that they are actually rewarding something that they don't intend to, ie., dog sat quickly and straight, but owner fumbled that much or wasn't paying attention that the dog had gotten up before they got the reward, so the owner inadvertently rewarded the dog for getting up. I understand that it happens to all of us, but with some people, they are so consistent in it, I believe it is a problem.

  8. Can you help work a miracle for a sighthound???
  9. In Sydney Pet Care 2000 (Taren Point definitely, Yagoona, I think).
  10. I know that we've had a couple of similar threads, but hope that someone will answer this one for me. I have decided that I would really like to trial one of my dogs this year for CCD (probably not until the second half of the year). How do I go about designing a training program to get both of us ready? One of the clubs I am with basically insists that you have to be at a certain level before you can join their trialling group. Another club I belong to, I don't particularly agree with how their trialling group trains - a lot of standing around talking, and not much work. Information on teaching heeling, specifically off-lead, and ideas on how to start "proofing" exercises (when and how to add distractions) would be appreciated. I have never trialled a dog before, so want to do "right" by him. "Him" is a 2.5 year old mutt that we adopted from a shelter 12 months ago. He has moments of brilliance for his heeling on-lead, but he has the attention span of a gnat (said in the nicest possible way!). SFE is going to be a problem, as he can be extremely mouthy, and this may be the one thing that prevents me from trialling him. I've been out to a few trials last year to watch and to get an idea of what goes on and have been reading the rule book from cover to cover, to help me to understand where people are losing marks or failing on exercises. I have also stewarded at a couple of trials which was brilliant as I was able to ask the judges questions (after the trial was over) about specific things, and get clarification on a few things which had confused me. So, where do I begin? And does NSW have anything like VIC's FOO?
  11. She's moving to the Sutherland Shire. I always wondered about Centennial Park!

    Pepper

Wags - I'm truly sorry to hear about Pepper. If was obvious from your posts how much you loved and cared for Pepper.
  13. Not in your area, but perhaps give Steve Austin a call (Pet Resorts Australia). I understand that he is qualified to temp assess and may know someone out that way who could help you out. Phone 02 9651 1747
  14. How about replacing the sand with "normal" dirt from your yard that he has been digging in?

  16. Ian Dunbar's ebook called "Before you get your puppy?" Looking for a link now.
  17. Add another one for joining MrsDog at Sutherland (since it is my local club). Also, MrsDog (hope that she doesn't mind me saying this) is very passionate about trying to get Rally started in NSW. She intends to start it at Sutherland Club next year, so any support that she could get would be fantastic.
  18. Thank you. I doubt that I would ever be a "serious" competitior, especially with my current dogs, but would be very keen on learning skills so I can help pass them on to other people.
  19. Pleeeeaaaseee come visit NSW - I would love to know more about Rally Obedience. Come to Sydney & I will definitely join you.
  20. This is been posted before, but some people may have missed it.... Kramar - Voluntary Product Withdrawal
  21. NDTF (National Dog Trainers Federation) are now running "distance learning" courses where you attend 2 x 8 day prac blocks in Sydney (Dural) and do the rest via correspondence. I understand that next year that Delta Society will be doing a similar thing in Sydney, but I do not know of the location.
