  1. Okay set up was easy... it's not too big I hope? I don't want to be a bother to noseworks class ppl but really want that extra solid metal security for peace of mind Plan was to put it in place of her bed in my room. Ain't going to fit. It can be a new table for the lounge once I get a cover??
  2. Got my gumtree crate! It's metal with plastic tray. Hardly used and covered in dust. 48" for $100! They showed me how to set it up ???? Brand unknown.
  3. I gave up on the first one, it didn't have any "no preference' options! Iams I really enjoyed, lots of breeds I am unfamiliar of or did not know the name! I got Plott Hound (89%) - had to google this one, intriguing! Reminds me of Thistle actually, how funny is that?! What an interesting dog, I quite like it. Chinese Shar-Pei (84%) - absolutely not my aesthetic American Pit Bull Terrier (82%) - Never ever no thank you Kooikerhondje (79%) - Had to look this one up, it has appeal! Tosa (78%) - I think perhaps NOT! Clumber Spaniel (78%) - not my aesthetic, really don't like extra skin wrinkles Welsh Springer Spaniel (76%) - so much appeal! American Staffordshire Terrier (76%) - I think perhaps staffies are too fiendly and enthusiastic for me, I like a bit of a standoffish behaviour  Sussex Spaniel (76%) - have not heard of this, long haired sausage dog spaniels  Portuguese Podengo (wire) (73%) - oh how intriguing! I think I prefer the smooth though. What lovely shapes Chesapeake Bay Retriever (73%) - I would consider! Bullmastiff (73%) - Maybe if came in a smaller size  Dalmatian (73%) - Is on the wish list one day, perhaps German Pinscher (72%) - Not sure, maybe? Puli (71%) - no way! Too mop like  English Cocker Spaniel (71%) - I like the tails and feathering but ears too fluffy for me  Tibetan Spaniel (71%) - I do not like the flat faces, no thank you Bull Terrier (71%) - I guess quizes don't usually have a "bad experience breed" where you can select dogs to cross out Canaan Dog (71%) - at this moment realised could click on names instead of googling. Googled breed anyway. Think if I went primitive dog I'd go a dingo cross? But special rules down here I think so probably a want-but-will-never-get dog Weimaraner (68%) - eyes creep me out Bulldog (67%) - no excessive wrinkles or flat faces pls Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (67%) - intriguing background! Portuguese Podengo (smooth) (67%) - how come smooth is down here and wire is further up? Is there a temperament difference? Hovawart (67%) - this one is out of the blue, as I did not click thick coat, or fluffy coat or long coat. Irish Water Spaniel (67%) - urgh no. Do not like looks at all Boerboel (67%) - noooooo Rottweiler (67%) - noooo okay maybe if it's a starkehre one raised with puppy culture when the other boof is old and retired  English Bulldog (67%) too flat no to too flat faces too flat! American Bulldog (67%) too boxer like. Like boxers, grew up with them and GSDs. Never want to own either  Basenji (67%) - I ...I am not sure. No mystery mutts in the list?! I find it a bit frustrating when breeds suggested in average person quizes are very rare Would that not make most more expensive and harder to get? I like this quiz! Usually suggestions for me are border collies, aussie shepherds, poodles, border terries, boston terriers and similar. None of those appeal to me refreshing to have a list of dogs where nod my head a lot!
  4. As title says, 2 situations happened. Pretty much every link has photos of either the injured child or the injured dog. Articles on the 11 year old being airlifted to hospital with some pretty serious wounds: http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/4342756/dog-mauls-11-year-old/?cs=2452 Media uproar where it comes out the 11 year old had broken in and attacked the dog http://www.tasmaniatalks.com.au/the-show/9955-wynyard-dog-attack-causes-uproar-on-social-media A facebook account (made by the owner or owner's friend? I am unclear) detailing the multiple fences to get to the dog and the multiple stab wounds. https://www.facebook.com/groups/684058178438753/
  5. Fascinating watching the different styles of running!
  6. Have you gone to the botanic gardens? Only been twice with dog myself and each time there's been a nice scattering of different dogs. Some good, some bad and nearly all on lead. Also provides lots of distractions like bikes, prams, tour busses, kids, walking groups, bbqs etc. and many many smells according to T ???? Maybe you could join us! She needs practice ignoring puppies, especially fluffy ones!
  7. I have found a 48" locally, hoping the gumtree deal pulls through ☺️ Then I'll need help finding covers ???? I wonder where I should ask for that... ????
  8. On my end at least, all the oodles I have met have been outstanding and personally I would rave about them too. They're not my kind of dog lookswise, but I really have liked all the ones I've met - both at obedience and out and about in life. I can't say how many were pet stores versus rescues versus puppy mills versus purpose bred. But I have consistently been impressed by them. I know there are f1s out there that are disasters out of badly bred purebred parents with shit raising conditions but I've not met them personally so they haven't given me a personal negative opinion yet like various other breeds where you have that one or two bad experiences that put you off forever (or the one or two good experience that make you love them! Cavs ????) But personal experiences are what partially effect people's choices you know? You have multiple good experiences and everyone you know with one is happy...you'd prob consider getting one. And they do fill that xyz niche when people are looking for something and none of the easily available breeds just quite match what they're looking for. And yes great marketing to a demand just waiting to snap up dogs. It's been...what, 20 years? I don't think they're going to suddenly drop out of demand anymore than farmers with lurchers. And not everyone values the purebred designation or even a pedigree. (The latter I hope could be improved through education and talking about the value of knowing family lines but you won't grab everyone. The shell be right attitude, the desire for one dog over another, indifference etc). You can tar and feather me now for liking oodles of doodles x's ????
  9. So this overpriced store one I rudely shoved her in was 107 L x 71W x 76H The Vebo place have one that is 107 L x 70W x 80H and a 122 L x 75 W x 85 H so perhaps that latter one? I had just noticed they have 30% currently off on crates... but then the sizing guides say not to give too much space? Could someone let me know if they are indeed as easy to unpack and move around as claimed? :) (Sorry to hijack scrappi! I had been looking around lately...) Edit: Woops missed your post Maddy, so suggesting the size you gave me yesterday based off a verbal knock off greyhound description
  10. That was the biggest one across all the stores today! Another angle. She can definitely turn around in it and I think she'd be able to lie down on her side flat (she was too worried to test this for me). What would next size up be? I think I am running out of sizes!
  11. Did our first, real, proper Stand For Exam today! I gave her lots of duck wing while the hand ran down her back. She was since first time someone done the full stroke in class, but didn't budge her feet or look overly worried! Last week she asked the head trainer to scratch her butt. The male trainer :) It is hot here so she is passed out on tiles while I hope it gets cool enough to quickly mow one of the yards. I have successfully negotiated a fence replacement with the neighbours, which will make for an interesting couple of days! I might take the time off to do some distance BAT and manners minder while the fence is dismantled and replaced, if her confidence is willing. (versus locking her up in the house while I work)
  12. Not your fault thistle! :) I think we are both too soft, mowgli and me! I think she would shut down with corrections and I would be in tears like i was today just watching - if I can train her in purely positive ways, I will! I'm not really sure if its just that trainer that we had today but so far we've had 2 (apart from from the head trainer who i feel is much more positive) who have done things like this or suggested things like correcting other peoples dog for "dominance" things like "getting on the couch" when they weren't in the room I think I would be too annoying if i was training nearby? She is excellent at doing anything if we are standing still and there are dogs nearby (even a couple of meters) its just i have difficulty with loose leash walking near dogs so we have to go sit in a driveway while people walk past us in the street etc - so i'm going to try find dogs to practise walking nicely with sometime soon! That said she is only a puppy so it is expecting a lot of her anyways Yes it is very varied, I come and complain here too when I get a trainer I conflict with. I think around start of the year I was really struggling and digging in my feet on correction suggestions for a specific problem and even though I wasn't correcting, I was so upset by end of each class Thistle and I really went backwards for awhile. (It's in the reactive dog thread somewhere). We like being challenged, but need to be challenged in the right way so this was too much challenge in the wrong way for us. I don't think you'd be annoying to train nearby. I have seen people with both personal dog trainers and on their own doing training with their dogs. You wouldn't be anywhere near as annoying as those who just let their untrained dogs offlead and loose near the classes. Now THAT'S annoying! But someone doing loops around the park working on their own dog? :) Love them. (and technically you'd be working near more types of dogs cause you could move from class to class to age group to age group! You would miss out on the group walking though) T likes to kick the ground around after pissing, I keep being told its dominance but honestly I think it's more her dog social nervousness where she uh overcompensates for nerves by being TOO enthusiastic. Although I do try to distract her from it when the ground is wet so she doesn't damage the park... You might be near the monthly pets market? I found them great for training but they moved down south so now too far away from me :'( http://www.doggyteabreaks.com/the-pets-market/ They have a pure positive trainer on site who has lovely dogs to work around :) their instagram is slowdogtraining, idk their company name. Eta: Oooh! Yes PM TSD, I'm sure they know lots of trainers you could scope out and see if you can work with.
  13. Wow so hot today, third warehouse was quiet and cool enough to have people help us out. (Have you noticed every single pet warehouse and store keeps their crates above head height? Which means need at least 2 staff members to get it down to try the size? ) This is...I don't know what this is, they called it the 800 series. It is 107 L x 71W x 76H Looks about right? (she found the whole thing a bit alarming but really needed to just SEE the space with her in it) $269
  14. Oh mowgli I am so sorry If there are no other classes nearby, you could bow out of attending classes but still arrive as classes are on to work on distraction and distance? Then if there is a trainer you object to you can move away to work near a different class. I only know about northern and eastern schools
  15. And a nice crate cover :D You can get some incredibly pretty ones on Etsy these days Although for travel, I'd also get a cheap oxford/waterproof one to keep other dogs from eyeballing her while she's crated- most of those covers come with velcro windows now so you can pick which bits of the cover are open. Enablers ???? You know my weaknesses
  16. I too bought mine from dog training products, got it...what, 3 days later? I'm city located though, so postage was "only" $24. It's been well worth it though I had reached out to k9pro about potentially ordering one through them, before finding the place I went with. Might try contacting them? They sounded optimistic on maybe getting one in.
  17. How big is Thistle compared to a greyhound? I've always used 48" crates for my greyhounds and found that size to be reasonable for most of them. The Shitty Whippet has a 36" crate and she's an 11kg whippet, so I'd think that size crate would be way too small for Thistle (judging just from how big she looks in photos, anyway). Shes a little bit shorter and not quite as long but could probably pass as a small knock off greyhound ???? PK I had not thought about laying on side... thank you for the link. Having never owned a crate before it is hard to picture what we will need ????
  18. Launching off this, when buying a crate online how do you know you're getting the "right size" for your dog? We have been measuring in person (putting her in crates in stores lol) and comparing prices - I am not sure if should go more space is better, or just enough to sit, stand, turn around and not have her head hitting the roof? Tossing up between 36" and 42" It would be a wire crate for packing her away at noseworks and tracking. I am worried about getting the "wrong size" :/
  19. Thank you. I appreciate your advice and look forward to any more you have to offer. The trainer took my puppy off me because he was moving around and making noises towards other dogs. She spoke harshly and pulled on his collar several times. He stopped dropped his head towards the floor and looked up at me with his eyes - sooo sad. He had no idea what he was being punished for. I thought about it later - neither did I - it wasn't as though he'd refused to follow an order and he was in a foreign environment with no precedent on how to behave. The more I think about it the more terrible I feel and hope I didn't start losing his trust because I let a stranger take him away and do that. If anyone should have been punished it should have been me for not telling him what to do (and I wasn't really sure myself) but if I'd been given a chance I would have called his name and told him to sit and I'm pretty sure that would have sorted the problem out. What use is a correction if neither you or the puppy know what behaviour you are meant to change? Trainers are meant to be training you too, if you're both coming away from it upset and confused I would either talk it out with the trainer (if you'd think they'd listen) or start ignoring them and attending class for the socialisation benefit or find a new school all together. (I am the same, if anyone is going to correct my dog it is me. and I decide what is "correction worthy" or not. It is a very small list, usually confined to moments of safety where priority is STOP RIGHT NOW. I make mistakes of course, get cranky. Try not to though.) Young puppy necks are much too fragile for corrections and martingales, although same as Didi I use a martingale on my big adult dog because of the security and eventually the loose lead walking (ours is a work in progress ....). But personally I'd be using a wide flat until your dogs a bit bigger or it's at risk of slipping the collar. I like Didi's suggestion of lots of games so you're the best thing ever. Be hard for them to take your dog and correct it if it's completely focused on you in hope of a ball or something. Good luck
  20. Perhaps a video so we can see what's going on? Offhand ideas you could try: Having her in a separate room/outside (crate or place training if you've got it) Set up distractions to keep her occupied Perhaps make a recording of the meal set up noises and play them at a really quiet level - reward her for calm - make slightly louder - reward her for staying calm etc Do the "fake out" game like with leaving the house, only you start to make the meal for a few seconds. Then stop, go back to whatever. Then start making it for a few more seconds. Stop, go back to whatever. Start making it for even more seconds etc...and just slowly build it up, stopping before she gets too worked up and doing something else less worrying like watching tv. Would take a long time, but trying to teach her it is not a big deal?
  21. There's a GSD club in bundoora who do tracking, obedience, agility and a few other things. I met a lovely GSD who's attending them recently, was curious over their noseworks stuff. Could scope it out?
  22. I had read they also used a taser on them but dogs were too amped up to be affected. The article I saw had photos and it was like a murder site, blood from the people everywhere. Road, cars, walls, plants. and a child saw it all, so horrible for all involved and who witnessed! (This is not whatever article I read a few days ago,so no pictures):
