Our pup had diarrhea the first afternoon, no blood, so I hit him with scourban, thinking gastro.(he had been in our house less than 24 hours) Vomited three times over night, just bile, no blood. Had bloody diarrhea the following morning, used scourban and straight to the vets..... They too thought bad gastro, gave him fluids under the skin, maxalon (for vomiting) and antibiotics. Vomited four times in two hours, so went to vet hospital a couple of suburbs away (has 24 hour care). Tested positive for parvo. This is six days ago. Has had two bags of plasma, protein levels have dropped to 2%, on permanent IV with Plasma, saline, glucose, painkillers and antibiotics. have tried various meds for vomiting, though not working. Is being syringed feed with prescription mushy stuff (sorry, don't know what it's called) every two hours. They aren't tube feeding as they said it makes them vomit more. Xrayed today to ensure fluid isn't building up in intestines or chest - all clear. Tonight they are sourcing meds from the local private hospital (SAN) from oncology. It's what they give cancer patients undergoing chemo to prevent vomiting. Hoping it works. My boy is a battler....nothing but skin and bone yet still gets up to vomit. If he's not giving up neither am I. I spend as many hours as possible with him nursing him on my lap, talking to him, rubbing him to help his circulation, change his blankets as needed to help keep him clean. He seems more relaxed when I'm with him, and I figure that if it helps it's worth it. It's a horrible rollercoaster ride, and I'm just dreading the phone ringing incase it's bad news. You don't even want to know what his current bill is at the vets... Re my house - I think I've become an environmental disaster with over 30 litres of straight bleach on my balcony alone I consider my house and car off limits to pups or any unvaccinated dogs for two years +. I'm currently even too scared to let my dogs go out in public lest they spread the disease....I feel tainted, I feel the dogs are tainted. It's a crap feeling. The irony.....I've done rescue for over two years, pulled plenty of dogs direct from the pound, never had parvo. This pup came from a private residence and viola, parvo......

Thanks Cavandra, I shall certainly go and have a read Re the costs, I just can't justify spending $200 per dog (I have three) to do the test and then find out that they needed to have their vaccination......
-
Thanks Cavandra Do you know what the cost is? is it more than having the vaccinations?
-
What is Titre testing? (I'm a bit behind the times...though always prepared to catch up ) My vets charge $77 per dog (just had mine done Wednesday) for C5, includes check up.

RIP Girl Dog , I know you are running free juice I'm sure that Girl Dog kept going for as long as she could just for you. She loved you dearly and I know that no dog could have been happier with the love and attention you gave her in the time she spent with you. Those were probably the best six months of her life before she went to the bridge. I bet when she hears you at the gate (pearly ones that is), it'll be her bark you hear first!! :D

Until he finds his forever home (or finishes eating our home contents ;) ) which ever comes first He too has a fetish for toys and has to leave them in a million pieces, plus he also hogs the toys, luckily though the whippets are faster and can sneak in like a flash and steal them back. And this is from a 10 year old Dachshund.....

Kongs are great if you smear peanut butter inside and then stick piece of liver treats in the peanut butter. Make sure it isn't easy for them to get out (so right in the centre of the kong), and they can spend hours trying to get the treats ;) ive tried kongs but sadly no matter what i put in them he's not interested, i also tried raw bones but he polishes them off quicker than u can say boo! thanks for the input though Bugger Maybe Winston would like to polish of my leather lounge that my current Dachshund foster has started on..... Leo spends lots of time licking the lounge (maybe it's the closest he's come to a cow) even when he's not trying to chew it....

The Vet Said I Have To Lose Some Weight....... Help
Stormy replied to daccydog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The last foster boy I had here (before Leo, the current foster Dachshund), who was also a Dachshund, needed to lose two kgs. I feed him just one meal a day (no snacks) and he had a half hour brisk walk a day min. Benny wasn't a fussy eater, so feeding dry (Eagle Pack) wasn't a problem. Maybe also making sure you use trim raw meat, and grate some extra veges into his dinner.... Oh and I think you should add some before and after photos just becasue I love looking at Dachshunds -
Best Way To Teach Dogs To Stay Off The Couch?
Stormy replied to morphjk's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Maybe not the answer you're looking for but we bought a second hand leather (easy to keep clean) lounge off ebay for the dogs. It's "their" lounge, and the rest of the furniture belongs to us -
Opinions / Advice In Regards To Heart Murmurs
Stormy replied to Stormy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
greychicken - Sorry to hear you lost you boy so soon after diagnosis Was he already showing symptoms when he was diagnosed? I'm kind of holding out hope that because this boy so far shows no symptoms he may still have a quite some time up his sleeve.....but I suppose that's not a given either. anniek - he'd be the slowest "greyhound" in the history of the breed even with leg extensions ;) He is ,as NAO pointed out, infact a standard Dachshund (or squashed rotti / dwarf Dobe ) Does anyone know if Dachshunds are prone to heart murmurs / conditions ? This is the boy in question MissMonaro - You've had both sides of the coin Really sorry to hear about you pup, it must be hard knowing that they should have a long life ahead of them but won't, really happy to hear too though that there was a special family who are wanting to treasure her for the time she does have. -
Opinions / Advice In Regards To Heart Murmurs
Stormy posted a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My latest foster boy (approx 10 years old) was diagnosed with a grade 4 heart murmur yesterday morning, and from what I gathered the outlook was grim. Today I went and got a second opinion (not that I don't trust the first vets diagnosis, but just wanted another opinion re care /outlook etc) One vet said medication at this point wasn't going to really help and the other vet agreed. One vet did say though once symptoms are presenting (coughing, tiredness, fainting etc) medication would then help. One vet said he shouldn't have any exercise at all, the other said 1/2 hour a day to keep him fit would better his odds at a longer life. One vet said he could drop dead anytime (one day, one week, or one year from now - i.e.; at anytime) the other said that's he's just as likely to live for quite sometime (read years) and not to stress too much. I've gone to thinking his death was imminent, no exertion no meds, to wondering if he's likely to be around three to four years from now, a small amount of exercise, and meds when the time came. Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting his to live for another 8 years (though I suppose he may always surprise ) due to the fact he's already approx 10. So I was thinking quality of life over quantity (years). I have no experience with heart murmurs and was wondering if anyone else had advice / experience that they may be able to share. -
Oh no Jane so very sorry to hear that Gloria too has crossed the bridge Thinking of you....

Goodbye My Wonder Dog, May You Be At Peace
Stormy replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Rainbow Bridge
Jane, so sorry to hear of your loss of "Wonder" the Wonder Dog. He will be waiting for you over the bridge, but until then I'm sure he'll be watching over you, being your guardian angel, because you were the mum that he adored. RIP Wonder  -
There are plenty of pups that are desexed around 12 weeks old and do just fine. Many of the pounds do it. Me personally, as I don't show or breed my dogs (I just have family pets) I prefer 12 weeks, especially for males, as I've found the longer you leave it, dominance becomes a bigger issue (seen this happen in other peoples dog too) and as for the females, I've no desire to have one in season. All the dogs I have owned over the years have been fine physically, lived long lives and have so far not suffered diseases etc But that's just my opinion :D Speak to your vet, maybe speak to several vets, and see what the general consensus is.
