Vet this morning said her back felt okay now but there was pain coming from both her hips and base of tail. On stronger pain relief, with more confinement and if no better, will x ray.

6 weeks.. Vet last week said just a week then to reintroduce walking. She really hasn't been doing anything since then except one short on lead walk today. Thinking of just showing up at the vet first thing tomorrow even though we don't have an appointment

My 10 year old Kelpie x ended up at the vet last Sunday and was diagnosed with a slipped disc- vet gave her an injection, anti inflams for a week and rest which she has been doing. It seemed much better and she was almost back to normal for a few days but yesterday and today seems worse again despite still being on the anti inflams. Will be taking her to our regular vet tomorrow but does anyone have any experience with back pain/ slipped discs in dogs?

In addition, i have 4 dogs and they all learn to hold a drop stay or bed stay while i work the other dogs. This is started using either a second person or a tether and starting very close to them so i can throw food rewards to them for waiting their turn. Once their on/ off switch is well established i don't need to food reward but this does take a little time.

Do you clearly start and finish your free shaping sessions? While i adore free shaping, you do have to be quite careful with the faster thinking dogs. I deliberately put off free shaping with my very high drive, easily aroused ACD until just recently (she is 14 months old) to ensure i had good control in all other aspects, could communicate clearly with her and could switch her on and off. She is amazing to shape so far and I've only done three or four sessions but i am very glad i waited until i had things like go to your bed and a nice drop stay cemented and she understood the rules of working/ training WITHOUT having to offer behaviours on her own.

There are a couple of breeds i want to own and the timing of wanting a puppy vs the breeders i like having an upcoming litter would affect what breed i would get at that time. I completely understand someone having a few breeds they'd love and choosing based on finding the right breeder of any of them.

There is an easier way IMO.. Problem with the crating is that unless you can get him in the crate extremely quickly, the association can become unclear (so therefore it takes many more repetitions) AND it doesn't address the core issue of the dog valuing visitors more than you. Lead on or take hold of the dogs collar when he greets people so that you can prevent him from being reinforced for the wrong thing in the first place. Then, as they are patting him, i'd mark with a verbal cue that's been pre-conditioned, and food reward. This becomes an excellent way to interrupt the dog and in addition they start to build more value for you than the visitor. The concept is that they learn- the closer they are to the visitor, the more they get from you. None of this requires compliance from visitors. :)

I would be getting hips and elbows checked PROPERLY (not just a vet having a glance at them) before anything else.

Yes I still think a cairn would suit too. A small well bred resilient terrier would really suit you :)

I really think (honestly, not actually being bias!) you would love a rough or broken coat JRT. I love kelpies and ACD's and don't mind border collies but i can picture you with a JRT far more easily. A nice Lagotto would be worth considering though maybe a little too heavy for ideal agility dogs.

Does anyone have any experience with elbow dysplasia surgery being unsuccessful? Our 12 month old ACD had a double elbow arthroscopy, followed by the required crate rest, physio and hydrotherapy. She is going back to the vet on Friday but the level of lameness currently is the same as the lameness shown before surgery (except for a few weeks of acute lameness after she fragmented cartilage, immediately before the surgery).

Normal for them to try it out- yes. But not normal for it to be an ongoing issue if it's being appropriately dealt with. JRT's learn very fast- both good and bad things- where another breed may take 5 reps a JRT might take two. They're not disimilar to ACD's in some ways too- tough, high drive, intelligent and quick thinkers.

When unsupervised- separate. My JRT and Bull arab type are the best of friends but are in separate areas when we're out, just in case!

I think it's important to know you have tried everything within your means prior to considering euthanasia. Different trainers use different techniques and there are situations where a different technique can yield a dramatically different result. If you believe you have done everything you can you can be at peace with your decisions. Only you know if you're there yet.

Do you intend to have the dog with your whippet eventually, unsupervised? If this was the goal and you're not prepared to manage the dogs in a way where they lead virtually separate lives- return the dog. It's one thing to work with a dog with such issues with no other dogs in the home. It's quite another to try to manage the situation with another dog in the home- particularly an elderly one who may not cope with the new dogs behaviour even if separated.

And what you have mentioned above comes down to the right combination of genetics AND training- Our JRT has a very high prey drive. But is good with cats and exceptional with other dogs- although he won't take rubbish from them/ tolerate rude dog behaviour though. Those things have been created through training with a puppy that was already of stable temperament. But stable doesn't mean easy or low drive- that's not what JRT's are. JRT's are likely to be assertive, drivey and quick to respond to action. They're certainly not for the faint hearted. I have JRT's and ACD's and i actually think there are elements of their temperaments that are similar.
