  1. I think things like this put off some of the very people that would approach things the right way while the people who are difficult buyers don't care.

I don't like hard and fast rules for every puppy buyer either. I simply wouldn't go to a breeder who wouldn't let me have any input into the puppy choice. Of course i would want them to have input as well. But i wouldn't respond well to being told which puppy was mine with no choice. On the flip side- i wish many people i know had had an experienced breeder choose their puppy for them as they didn't have the experience to do so. Every puppy buyer is different.

  2. I am assisting a wonderful client (who has had a very unfortunate experience with their previous dog) to source a new companion. They have (after some advice) decided a Cocker Spaniel would best suit their situation so i would like some recommendations for good breeders in Victoria. Ideally they would have litters available within a reasonable period of time.

This is an excellent home who are willing to do anything they need to do to welcome a new puppy to the family.

  3. I worked with a child whose mother contacted me at her wits end. They had tried child therapists and a variety of other options to try to desensitise the child to dogs. She was so fearful that she would not come down from play equipment if she could even see a dog and would break down if she needed to pass one on the street. She had a rabbit- which had helped with some things but she still could not bear to see a dog. :(

We did 3 sessions and did a variety of exercises using my own dogs. The dogs being used for situations like this are hard to come by- i have 5 dogs and though all of them are fantastic with children- but one would have been too boisterous to start with, one would have greeted her with a 'woo woo' etc. I used different dogs at different points of the training- i am fortunate enough to have such wonderful teaching dogs for these situations. Its vital to work at the childs pace, not over face them and focus on giving them control in a variety of ways. By the end of our time working together, this child could hold my dogs lead, give commands, give treats and a short pat.

Try to find a professional with dogs that can help.

  4. Be very careful about timidity. Take your time finding a breeder that you can develop a rapore with and if possible spend some time at a dog show watching the various dogs and the way they behave.

I find lagottos to be wonderful to train- but timidity does seem to present as a problem with some.

  5. It was pretty hot today- a few pups in my classes were the same. I wouldn't be too concerned and the treats you're trying sound good but i'd also try some chicken or four legs as well.

  6. Our tenant is moving out so i thought i would let everyone know of a pet friendly rental. 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom with separate hallway and laundry and 1 year old kitchen.
