Brisbane Dog Behaviourists - Desperately Need Help!
Cosmolo replied to Latoya's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Just to add to what everyone else said- While you can't change his temperament, you can change many of his problematic behaviours that you have mentioned. And i have a friend who recently used the adaptil collar with good results on a very difficult dog. Worth a try. -
Absolutely no way is he too old!! And he already loves it, has some good basic skills and understanding. Go for it!!

Please don't do that to your cats. The stress levels of the cats must be considered in any training program. First- have the dog on lead when around the cats- this allows you to prevent teh dog chasing the cats in the first place. Look up the "Look at That" game- if you search it via youtube you should come up with some videos. Do as many repetitions as you possibly can of the game, relating it to the cats. Ensure the cats have places within the room you are working where they can get away from the dog- a high scratching post for example. When you can't supervise and train using the above, continue to separate as you have. In addition, start teaching the dog to either go to a bed and stay there or crate train him so that you can pay attention to your cats whilst the dog is in the same room. It will take time- but be worthwhile.

Thanks you very much- looks like a very nice topline to me.

Thank you very much raineth- much appreciated.
-
Diagrams are definitely fine too.

Sorry to hear about your poor pup : ( As soon as she is able, try to make sure you set up some little socialisation exercises- novel items and surfaces would be easy non strenuous ones for her- its a critical time for her and i have seen a number of adult dogs with issues that experienced some confinement prior to 6 months of age which i believe was a major contributing factor to their issues.
-
Yep i understand every breed's conformation is different and this is highlighted in the presentation. But i also need to give people an idea of what serious bow legs, cow hocks etc look like so i am looking for extreme, no debate kind of bad conformation.
-
Thanks everyone- i did try google but it just brought up lots of images of beautiful dogs winning conformation shows! I don't want to use images to show something that is correct for the breed/ breed standard. Kavik- if you could that would be fantastic.
-
What Sandra said. Its not something i would recommend. Are you prepared to safely separate the 2 dogs if (when) needed and always separate them if you are not at home? When dog owners have one dog and are looking for a second, i don't understand why they wouldn't reduce (not eliminate) the risk of inter dog aggression by getting the opposite sex.
-
What Erny said. But i find it can be breed specific- certain breeds are alot worse than others even with all other things being equal. Labradors are one Rubystar : )
-
I am after some conformation photos- of a variety of breeds though it would be beneficial to have the same breeds showing any of the following as well as correct conformation for comparison. Cross breed photos would be fine too. Cow hocked Bow legged Paws turned in Paws turned out Uneven muscle tone Roach back I am wanting to use these photos in a lecture which includes a short section on conformation problems in dogs and am happy to credit the photo source.

I mean no disrespect to the OP but i think its important to remember that not everyone is experienced with managing packs and dealing with dog to dog interactions and dynamics. I have 5 dogs, 3 of whom are bitches. It can be done. It can be done with a variety of breeds. But do i recommend it to others when they can choose to have opposite sexes as the only dogs in the home. No. It lowers the risk of inter dog aggression. Socialisation does also lower the risk as does good leadership and management. Why not cover all bases? Why not lower risk if you can choose to?

Need Advice About Potentially Giving A Home To A Rescue
Cosmolo replied to Isabel964's topic in General Dog Discussion
Prognosis for such issues vary from dog to dog. But i think it unlikely that such a dog would become a confident 'guard' type dog. Dogs like this often grow in confidence in certain contexts but revert to the feelings of fear and anxiety when the context changes. I have a dog here adopted from a shelter at 12 months old with serious fear based issues (no aggression). We have had her for 5 1/2 years. She will never be normal and she will never enjoy the same kind of life that our other dogs can. Rehabilitating dogs with serious fear based issues is not to be taken lightly- it is very involved and sometimes not terribly rewarding.. Is this dog's fear serious? Who knows. If the family member really wants the dog, get it assessed by a professional first. -
When i was working in a shelter we had a cat come in with a collar injury who was extremely malnourished. The cat exhibited what we thought were neurological symptoms initially and we thought there was something really wrong with her. As it turned out it was the extreme muscle wastage causing all of the issues and they gradually resolved as she improved her condition. Good luck with Cookie- glad she was found.
