Male Or Female For Obedience And Agility
Cosmolo replied to jonesy76's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I know two standard poodle boys who would be exceptional for obedience/ agility, just haven't seen a girl recently to compare!! -
Kathy is north but i think she travels south as well- if she doesn't she can refer to someone good who does
-
Kathy Koppellis McLeod, Kathy's private dog training- not sure of number

I would prefer to use a crate when you can't supervise as you won't know if the pup gets tangled etc. Then use the lead when you are there, hold onto it while they are interacting so that when the puppy starts to mouth the child, you can provide an immediate correction.

Engage the services of a qualified trainer- a good one will be able to help with your fears as well as the dogs issues
-
Have you considered a puppy pre school or one on one session with a qualified trainer? If you pm me your email address, i can send you through the booklet we normally give out at puppy school which will cover many of the problems you mention BUT nothing will be better than getting some professional help- as soon as you are able

How Many Agility/flyball/etc Dogs Do You Have?
Cosmolo replied to laffi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Don't know if we count as we don't compete but i have 4 dogs- one is older and pretty much retired from everything. 2 are obedience/ agility dogs with one of those doing scent detection as well (for demos/ displays etc) and the third one is our puppy who is starting out in everything Not too hard time wise as we get to work with them in between clients/ take them on jobs etc! Couldn't do it if i worked full time though! -
What have you tried so far? What are you looking for an alternative to? :D

How To Help A Dog Afraid Of People?
Cosmolo replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Think i am missing something too But the first dog sounds like total lack of socialisation during his critical period- ie before you got him. And the second dog maybe as i said above. -
The timing of walking the dog away, the reason for the behaviour in the first place and a number of other factors would influence whether what your instructor suggested would work. But, as cavnrott suggests, one on one training is likely to give you better results. I set clients dogs up with my own dogs frequently in one on one sessions so you're still able to work around dogs in a controlled environment in a private session.

If you would like to email me [email protected] or pm, i'm sure we'll be able to help you and Turbo. Its not a wise idea to try to advise online in this type of situation

How To Help A Dog Afraid Of People?
Cosmolo replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hard to say but if the problem is getting progressively worse i would suggest that the socialisation efforts MIGHT be acting as incomplete flooding and therefore sensitising the dog. If he is uncomfortable in certain situations, is exposed to them for 'socialisation' but is removed from them before the fear has subsided, this can worsen the behaviour next time around. This is just a guess at what could be happening based on the info provided. -
Is Bad Training Better Then No Training At All? Why?
Cosmolo replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Agree completely -
Let me first say i have never trained a dog to do this and don't have showing experience with entire male dogs.. I would think that some dogs have a harder time dealing with it than others. But, i would suggest if you wanted to train the dog to ignore rather than mask with Vicks etc you would need to find an aversive that was at a higher level than the attraction of the bitch. The problem with doing this is that the dog may then pair the aversive with bitches in season- not what you'd want for a stud dog.

Cosmolo replied to Cosmolo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks for responses- good point Erny- and i think it would vary depending on the dog. I think that some dogs can cope fine with average or poor training while others need great timing and consistency, not just to learn but to maintain a reasonable state of mind as well. -
Congrats LP- the DOLers are doing so well lately!! Who's a good boy!

Qualifications To Teach At A Dog Obedience Club
Cosmolo replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Jules P. What is the reason for not allowing you to handle clients dogs? I'm just curious Soraya- we specialise in one on one where we come to you. Feel free to email me with some details of the problem and i can provide more details for you -
Qualifications To Teach At A Dog Obedience Club
Cosmolo replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
There are plenty of clubs who do try to deal with such issues themselves though which i think should be avoided. Interesting that you're not meant to handle any dogs? What happens if you need to demonstrate a technique? -
Qualifications To Teach At A Dog Obedience Club
Cosmolo replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ideally what i would love to see is a team of instructors that deal with all facets of obedience at the clubs who undergo a course similar to what you mention. This course should focus on how to teach obedience exercises to both dogs and handlers with a range of training techniques. Then i would love to see a behaviour specialist on site at training with NDTF qualifications and relevant experience who can deal with behaviour problems including dog to dog aggression and dog to people aggression. I think this would provide the best possible service to members and minimise the stress and pressure on new or inexperienced instructors, without making it impractical to provide economical training services to those who may not be able to afford professional training. -
Good work Jaybeece- its great tp hear such positive updates!! Erny OT, whats this about a push to band Rt's and prongs in all states? Push by whom? Surely innotek will have something to say about it? They've won against Hugh Wirth once..

"Oh he'll just grow out of that won't he?" (said as puppy is mouthing owners children constantly..) "You can't say no to the dog because you'll diminish the bond you're trying to build"
