  1. dont feed dog tinned food to rats - that is not an acceptable diet
  2. it would be me, my OH is a trainee trainer :D send me an email [email protected]
  3. cat mince is usually a little more of the better cuts of meat and some taurine added as well as calcium. Basically it's not as cheap as pet mince. Still nothing that should be the basis of a dogs diet. if the dog does have such a rare medical condition he should be on a special diet not cat mince and canned food. And how did he even pass as an assistance dog in his condition?
  4. your dog is suffering nothing more then lack of calories - his diet is totally inadequate for a dog of his size. Why are you feeding tinned food and cat mince? Get him a good dry food and raw meaty bones like lamb flaps for him to eat. Your dog probably collapsed because he's starving.
  5. yup nothing new either. It's why people who have cat allergies can sometimes get away with having a cat if they wash it on a very regular basis. As for the hypoallergenic breeds show me an oodle and watch my face erupt and burn like crazy.
  6. Look into the Vets All Natural range they make a raw meat diet compelete for your dogs.
  7. Royal Canin has a specialist Giant Breed diet. Eagle Pack Giant breed is a great food as well. 6 cups seems an aweful lot of food I would not be supplementing with anything as a good food is complete. The vitamin C wont hurt at that dose but considering dogs make their own vitamin C a dose like that I would be tempted to say is just money down the loo. Literally I have raised large/giant breeds on Royal Canin and I think it's the best out there.
  8. The active ingredient is Ivermectin - it's probably an ivermectin resistance they're seeing in the US from an overuse - they're having to rotate horse wormers due to mectin resistance why not heartwormers. Saying that US is not the same as Australia when it comes to the overuse of chemicals. Most if not all of your other combination products will be using some mectin to deal with heartworm. Hence I would assume it's the same thing. This is the type of effect that comes from when dog owners keep underdosing and split dosing their animals with products. Either dog it or dont do it at all. As for Milbemax I do know of a pup with brain damage from one dose. Apparently 'collie' safe.
  9. take a look at the Shoof.com.au catalogue, they will let you know who retails their stuff but you can view their entire catalogue, there is work boots in there if you get desperate I am making a Shoof order at my work late tomorrow, let me know what I want I can get it and post it to you when they arrive for me. I stick to the RRP of their catalogue. If you need to ring me it's (03) 52502056
  10. you are a bad lady and rescue dogs as a permanent feature are from here on in banned in this household :p
  11. get yourself a consult with someone like K9 Pro or Glenn Cooke at Pet Resorts Australia ASAP before you end up stiching up a dog or two
  12. OH has been offered a Pharoah puppy male ... I have to force him to say no all the time lol they havn't been born yet so unfortunately the breeder has time to work on him
  13. I dont care what anyone says a good leather leash is better then all the others combined. I only bother with the www.fordogtrainers.com police types and they're incredible. 6 years on and despite a few visits to the beach it's still in awesome condition, I just rub some basic hand cream into it if it gets wet.
  14. Woofen if you want a Lakenois get a Malinois lol yeah dont worry I have a wishlist ... BRT Dutch Shepherd more and more Malinois Boerboel Bauceron Presa Canario
  15. Hey Steve while you're lurking I had a customer at work ask me about her Maremma, it's a pet only was bought from a farm as a pup but it follows her religiously and any time she does leave it shreds the bed while sitting at the back door. Otherwise a fairly quiet dog. I recommeded since she was already considering chickens to get a few and start encouraging the dog to go be with them as a job instead of obsessing over her. Would feeding the dog next to the chicken pen and putting a basic bed out there be at least a start in getting this dog to 'guard' the chooks instead of her or are already formed bonds hard to break?
  16. not every dog will get along with every other dog. Obviously there is something about your new foster that makes your own dog feel uneasy about it. Without seeing the dogs interacting what is actually going on would be a guess
  17. I prefer larger age gaps ... I have a 7 1/2 year old, 6 year old, almost 4 year old and an 8 month old. So far so good Wait until you're happy with the behaviour and training level of your dog and it has proved it is well mannered with puppies. It will make the second one an absolute breeze to raise as it will learn off the first
  18. put it on her and leave it on her until she gets over it.
  19. I find it more worrying that at your pups age it has not left the backyard. That will cause more damage then not feeding mince or not walking it where other dogs have been.
  20. take her to the vet for a check up ASAP, this doesnt seem quite right. My bitches have been a little sooky and quieter but never like this.
  21. somehow I was made to sit through that movie ... as a trainer you want to scream at the TV I also saw the Cesar Milan episode where they had ANOTHER labrador that was just untrained and out of control. They didn't learn anything from the first one but to write off the dogs as just 'how they are' in excuse of their bad behaviour.
  22. if clicker is going to be your predominant method and you're going to be providing a substantial amount of calories that way (especially in smaller dogs) then I dont see why not use the food. It's true NILIF. Normal food will increase in value to the dog if it cannot access it any other way. I dont think things like cheese, sausage, schmackos day in day out as treats are a good thing for a dog either. My dogs will work very hard for their kibble if it is not accessable any other way. get him a small bite kibble. I train enough dogs that sit there and munch the treats their owners bring none of them seem have gotten the memo that chewing equates to lack of learning some people bring some hulking great dry treats lol poor dogs are sick to the stomach
  23. why dont you just use his food instead of feeding him out of a bowl?
  24. technically speaking inbreeding does increase genetic abnormalities as you increase the rate of recessive genes and mutations being expressed. It's what makes pedigree dogs the way they are and produce consistent pups - limiting the gene pool. But the general publics perception of it is a bit backwater so hence it propagates the old Don Bourke propaganda
  25. Petsitters I think it comes down to too many people just dont understand dogs. A dog is a dog, but a popular working breed with sometimes a good dose of weak nerve are going to be seen more often. We want to be the dogs friend more then we want to be the dogs owner because that is a dirty word these days. They are not a breed that should be as popular as they are but the general public only know of a handfull of purebreds hence keep channeling themselves too them despite whether they are suitable or not.
