  1. He's just too thin and you can see the patches of hair missing, it's scabby there too. He wouldnt get off the couch to stand for a photo but there is a lot of hair coming out and you can pull it out along his back by the chunk. My Malinois are doing really well though, its one of the few things that fed by itself will make my older Mal bitch hold condition. Dogue just cant take it I think it's the lamb in it. Had him on Royal Canin for a few days and he's getting better already and he get less of it. Just not enough protein and fat I think.
  2. I replied in the other thread. Where did you get your dog from? I would consider taking her to Schutzhund club in order to learn how to harness her drive and use it for good not evil :p You dont have to do the bite component but the obedience and tracking would do that dogs brain and drive a world of good. Trainers there will be the best bet for your dog a it is their speciality. http://www.schutzhundaustralia.com/ Your dog sounds like its just bored and extremely frustrated hence the destruction. Dogs that keep being destructive just have not had their needs met.
  3. I say get someone like Cosmolo in ASAP before you even start crate training. I would start it properly and under professional supervision to prevent the dog forming an idea (that may be a bad one) which is then another hurdle to overcome. For a stressful dog anyway start him on 1ml of horse calming paste a day and continue while you crate train ;) more exercise too to exhaust the dog you will find that the stress reactions can decrease when he's exhausted. I wish you all luck with this I know how difficult it can be to introdue new scenarios with dogs like this!
  4. A tired dog is a quiet dog. She needs way more obedience and training to tire her brain as well as exercise in general from the sounds of it. Get up earlier, spend half an hour doing obedience and tricks then a nice long walk and more obedience and play in the evenings.
  5. Rosemary can help incite seizures in dogs that are predisposed to them, especially epileptic animals. Heaps of links about it considering Rosemary is a herb that helps increase blood flow http://www.dog-harness-solutions.com/herbs-for-dogs.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yorkie-health-diet/159005-rosemary-extract-seizures.html http://spoiledmaltese.com/forum/52-maltese-health-behavior/91131-rosemary-seizures.html http://www.the-puppy-dog-place.com/timberwolf-dog-food.html
  6. the dogs can lick themselves or rub and spread the smell. Rarely does the actual smell come from her bum
  7. I constantly get this at work ... that a dog cant learn anything at all if its not a puppy anymore so you shouldnt bother trying to change it that the dog is not some 'show dog' so it only needs the cheapest food, its diet doesnt matter that a dog cant live without canned food, whereas raw meat is something to be suspicious of that the dog only needs the $1 a kilo crap food while the cat is the one that needs the premium O_o sometimes I hate where I work
  8. Remember all dog foods are horses for courses. What works for one person, or even one dog wont work for another. It works for two of mine and thats better then nothing at all.
  9. you gradually wean them down from the collars just like you should with citronella anyway. At least the static collars dont coat the animals face and mucus membranes constantly. The trick with them is 1) to always provide quality alternative activities and exercise for the dog wearing the bark collar. The dog has to have the option to redirect it's attention and energy to something else less noisy. You cannot expect a dog to simply stop barking because of the collar and then just sit there like an ornament with no enrichment. 2) Use a collar right for the dog. Like I said the innotek ones allow the dog to bark but within reason. As you notice your dogs barking decreasing you can leave the collar on but turn the unit off. Gradually you wean the dog off the whole unit and back to a normal collar. Always good to have as well in case they 'forget'
  10. Corvus why would you crate train a hare? What are you trying to prove with that poor creature just let it go back to where it came from to enjoy a life as a hare not as an experiment. I'm sorry I find your blog and video of that poor hare quite distressing actually.
  11. anal glands, what breed and what diet are you feeding? Also do you notice a difference in consistency of the poo when it happnes? Sometimes they need emptying by the vet
  12. why does your dog need to feel fuller?
  13. yup find an awesome greyhound muscle man or really good dog chiro before you keep going with the meds and tests. They will usually give you a ballpark or fix the problem totally as I have found with my lot
  14. if you're going to do things do them properly. I love Innotek products they are well designed for the average dog owner and easy to use as well as taking the stress out of training fairly. I tell people to order them straight from Innotek. I have used them on my Malinois because as a 6 month old she decided that barking was something we did for almost every hour of the day. She learned fairly and the lesson stuck. She still barks, very loudly, but she wont just keep going if there is no reason.
  15. you need a quick lesson in the effective use of a correction chain. The soft poos could be due to quite a few things, excitement is one of them. A friend has an amstaff who gets diahrrea when out running about at a dog park but fine at home.
  16. get an innotek static bark collar for small dogs, they work on a warning and level system. The dog will get a tiny stim and only if it keeps barking will the level go up one, then another, then another. It's a successive one that is fair on the dog and teaches it quality over quantity barking. You can always up the start level if the lowest does nothing.
  17. if you have some spare time and dont mind travelling to Geelong bring him to my place, he can come learn from all of mine which are crate trained. He also needs help in order to overcome that fear he has. It's a bit of a hump but he can be taught a crate is a wonderful safe place.
  18. you always need to reinforce behaviours. Think of it logically, would you go to work for no money? Dogs learn better when you show them what you want them to do and reinforce the behaviour with a reward. Saying that I am never going to be against applying a punisher when required - eg your pup latches onto you so you growl NO and scruff it etc, especially when the behaviour needs to be extinguished quickly. All a clicker is is a sound that marks the exact behaviour you want then you give the dog a reward ... you have an inbuilt clicker it's called your voice. Just say 'yes' the provide reward. There is always preferences to how people train, the trick is to do what works for your dog not try to fit the dog to a preconceived notion of how to train. As long as you always show the dog what the right behaviour is and reinforce it you cant go wrong even if you do use punishers. Kill parvo vaccine is a dead virus not a live attenuated. I would take him to dogs that are well mannered and you know are healthy/vaccinated. I would not be taking any puppy to a dog beach or dog park no matter how well vaccinated. Be smart about it. If you train on artificial grass and you find your dog is 'attached' to going on that simply start moving the artificial turf to where you want the dog to go later. Dogs can be retrained to do anything it just takes a little effort.
  19. I go through 20kg a fortnight and I'm switching my boys back to Royal Canin. My DDB is starting to look like a moth eaten Ethiopian. My girls are doing really well on it so I'll stick to BH for the Mals and RC for the DDB/Rott.
  20. all I need is 12 of the things ... fly my pretties FLY
  21. no no i'd believe she shot her husband ... blind stupidity and panic, wave a gun around ...
  22. do as much as the pup can physically handle, but you should be channeling the pup into what you ultimately want it to do. Foundation work helps build drive and body condition.
  23. a pitbull named cocaine ... in Mississippi ... says it all really
