I'm proud of my beaten, starved, abused and terrified Malinois bitch of digging deep down and loving people enough to now do LandSAR up wind, down wind, no leads, until she finds them I'm proud of my young Mal bitch for getting a certificate recognising her drive and skills from two of the most respected trainers in Holland, for protecting me, for being a goof ball, for kissing babies faces and being an all round womble of a dog I'm proud of my male Mal for being so calm, tolerant and confident at all times, for helping so many dogs get over their reactivity and tolerating so many children leading him round and round without protest I'm proud of my squishies ... my pug and frenchie for just being there all the time, no matter how we feel and pushing their own special form of micro management onto puppies that need to be put on the right path I'm proud of my eldest Mal bitch for being my protector, passing as a working security dog, always being with me and protecting me from my ex I'm proud of my dear departed Rottweiler, despite no hip sockets and the worst elbows in the world he passed as a therapy dog and helped the elderly and those afraid of dogs in his short 4 years I'm proud of my dear departed Dogue, you were the first protection Dogue in the state, you were a therapy dog, a lover and a fighter who protected me. He worked for me until and protected me even on the day he died... we went training, then he wanted to rest and be left alone in his crate to sleep and never woke up. I'm proud of my dear departed GSD who was destined for a bullet because he wouldnt bite ... he shone through with love, his potential blossomed with care and he was a fantastically balanced dog. I had him for one short year until the toll of a neglectful upbringing took him from me when his hip fell out of the socket on his second birthday and he gave up on life. I'm proud of all of my dogs. They gave so much and some gave their entire lives to help me and others. We should be humbled by what our dogs give back to us and what their potential is. Seven is an awesome dog with no limits. You should be very proud :D She's a fantastic dog

How To Make Them Enter The House Calmly?
Nekhbet replied to cassie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
All well and good but sometimes frustration can work against you when you are not directly controlling the dogs behavior. Two frustrated and excited giant breed dogs can destroy a back door in no time. You do either one or two at a time, whatever you can control properly and enforce your rules. Conversely if you're short of another person to help and their leash skills involve potential shoulder dislocation, treats in the pocket and leash on the leader. Ignore the other totally and reward heavily the ringleader for following your guidance - the other usually follows. You know your dogs better then I can see down the interwebs ;) My dogs have free access to the house 24/7 so I set inside and outside rules early so I dont come home to a trashed house -
How To Make Them Enter The House Calmly?
Nekhbet replied to cassie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Here is your problem 1) inconsistency 2) lack of actual calm behavior 3) you're actually building excitement then allowing them to explode They might sit and not be jumping about but that is not calm - that is just performing a trick to get inside. The actual position does not matter it's the dogs excitement level that does Put them on the leash before they come in, if they wont listen straight away them straight back outside for a while until they get it. You have to be firm and consistent or it will never end -

Is It Safe To Keep A Gsd (big Dog) In With Little Ones?
Nekhbet replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
I have 4 Belgian Malinois with a french bulldog and a 13 year old pug and they get along fine. I separate when I leave though only because of size difference. If you want a working style not show style dog there are some good breeders around, but finding a laid back no drive german shepherd these days with that shape is a bit rare. It's a working breed that needs firm training while growing up so you dont have problems. -
Gahhhh the look command, the bane of my existence. I dont use it, and heaven forbid the person that does use it in front of me. Build your focus into ALL your commands. It's the point of a command, to comply AND focus. If I say sit, dog sits and looks in face. Whatever you say the dog should look at your face. Putting a command to it makes it provisional and you then reward for lack of focus in other things. So eg you say sit, the dog can look at your hand a bit, dither around and still be rewarded. Look at the whole picture that you want, you want focus and clarity. Name means focus straight to your face. Don't create a rod for your own back with a look or watch command. Position, focus, mark, reward. No focus = non reward marker. I start all the puppies like this too and it's actually a lot easier for the owners long term as it's build it. Even the most novice owners have a pup that sit/drop/stand/heel with focus on face not on hand/treat pouch/pocket etc.

Look up blue german shepherds and malinois ... if they can dilute it, well why the heck not!! Lets see how far we can breed out of a standard

Ear Tip Issue - Treatments And Progress
Nekhbet replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Erny give this stuff a dog http://healthpost.com.au/skybright-colloidal-silver-cream.html It's incredible stuff, I've used it on my own face to test it and on my dogs -
I've had entire male dogs in the house for years and dont have a problem. My current male is allowed inside when I'm not home and I dont have an issue. The motivation to mark isn't worth it

Roo is recommended but you can use other meats if your dogs do better on them. The point of the dry mix is to be a bit of a filler, it will come out undigested in the poo (especially the whole oats) but that is the point - to mimic the indigestible parts of a diet and to help the dog not become constipated from lack of fiber. If you have a grainy slosh you're not adding enough meat to it as it shouldnt be like that.

No container is perfectly sealed. Plastic containers, lidded jars, wraps etc all release odour in various degrees. The theory is there no problems, the actual performance is a bit average and very handler led.

Adolescence And Training
Nekhbet replied to ActuallyAngela's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Put your foot down and dont take the crap from the dog. If he's not interested in training dont let him stuff about, go put him away for 5 minutes, go have a coffee and try again. Dont want to work? You dont even get to stand here and do what you want. Yes it's a trying time and yes the warm burst of weather is also driving dogs a bit potty. Dont let him ignore you, raise your expectations and rewards really have to be earned. If he rejects reward, move on. If he sniffs, jumps etc give him a pop of the collar and move away so he cant self reward and ignore you. -
Which Breeds Do You Wish Were In Australia?

Perro de Presa Canario .... no ears please too .... Look at that regal face -
I think too many people have blown this dogs behavior way out of proportion - if the dog was HA/DA it would never have made it out of the Lost Dogs Home. The dog has reactivity issues that just have not found the right way to be dealt with to make them stop after all this time and the dog nipped, note nipped NOT put the tradie in hospital, when confronted with someone alone. Who knows what the tradie did too if the dog took that long to make a fuss. A HA dog doesnt just leave with with a nip on the ankle, and it sure as hell doesnt make it out of somewhere like a shelter. I'm surprised if Tippi bothers coming back.
-
Tippi aim for people with a working dog background, there are people like K9IQ, K9 Services International, I do consults too if we can find a good time, also K9 Company which run classes. As for the tradesman, all fool him. His fault really for entering a premises and the law is actually in the dogs favour.
-
More the point, what coping and management strategies were you taught by your trainers in order to have to be dependent on regular lessons from them? If the dog had a temperament test at the LDH home and did not have an issue with other dogs or food, then maybe it is a handling problem - Tippi is taking advantage of the situations and not being shown the alternative directly enough. Your problems actually sound quite minor... as for the tradesman - you have a dog with a propensity for a guarding instinct and you were not home, he entered the property and got a nip after a LOT of patience from the dog. That is NOT abnormal in fact that shows a LOT of restraint from the dog. If you wanted a quiet, roll over pet any stranger can handle and enter your property at any time you aimed for the wrong breeds. The growling at men, Tippi should have been shown a LEAVE command which is you attaching a neutral value to the dog and expressing that stimulus has NO value to it and to go off. It's basic control through conditioning and over the course of a year you should have achieved it with your trainers. Yes we can be surprised at how dogs settle in to new environments but breed, gender and age can give us some good indicators. Mastiff and hunting hound background is not going to make for the soppiest, quiet dog compared to something like a cavalier if we look at the law of averages. Even the most well trained dog can regress or change with a new environment - one of my clients had a VERY expensive, well trained dog take a week and a half to settle in, start growling at their baby and then proceeded to cause injury to the original trainer of the dog when they came over for a visit. It's an animal, they're not always as predictable as we like to make them out to be but we just need the tools to manage the behavior and drive them in the direction we want them in.

Def get onto someone like Craig Murray ASAP, or someone with working dog experience, more specifically the guarding breeds. You dont need to ramp up the work with the treats you actually need to cut it back and make it quality over quantity coupled with a high level of focus. If you read nothing else look at www.leerburg.com at least it's written by working shepherd/Malinois people

Von Forrell has a new stud dog and I have met a couple of the pups he has bred this year. Not too over driven at all very good temperaments.

Any Rescue Dobes In Vic/geelong Area?
Nekhbet replied to Mila's Mum's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Dont know of any at the moment but will keep my ears open. There's a few breeders that have older dogs occasionally that might be worth a look. -
Its not up to the dog to protect and it's not up to the dog to react. The point of socialisaion and raising a dog is to teach it HOW to react when confronted with stress. It's why I teach all dogs and especially puppies focus straight in the eyes - they find it potentially rewarding and a reason to behave extra well even with strangers. No dog that passes through my school has issues being leaned over, patted roughly etc and it's something severely lacking in many socialisation programs - the fact that human hands and faces will be VERY close to your dog some time in it's life and it has to learn to deal with it. If the perceived rewarding outcome is bigger then the stressor the dog wont react. I'll have to take a video of the older dogs, we throw things around them, threaten them, shout at them etc without force and the lack of reaction too is part of the reward experience.

Mushers secret wont protect from the heat, you need boots for that. It stops the pads from weathering and cracking from mechanical stress not temperatures like perth has in summer from the sun heating the concrete. I put them on them and dont let them touch them, and play a bit. If I say no they wont touch. I dont ask them I tell them.

Go to a fabricator and have on made. I have a friend who had them made for his Malinois for the back of the ute. Otherwise they just burst out of anything else. http://leerburg.com/1093.htm http://leerburg.com/1095.htm Here is the shape for 2 styles.
