  1. We bought a Mercedes Vito Van. Did not have seats in the back, can fit dog crates in there and equipment no worries. We even went camping with 3 dogs, all the stuff and had plenty of space to spare. We have an auto turbo-diesel, get plenty of k's to the tank, plus it drives exactly like a car, doesnt feel like you're driving a van at all.
  2. you're giving her way too much attention, she's an adolescent, settled in and is now being a typical cheeky teenager. Don't feed the behavior, I find with dogs like this less is more. The trick is instead of correcting curb the behavior by channeling all that energy into something constructive off the bat. Oh and dont push bull arabs they're happy to use their teeth when they mature. you can email me if you want some more tailored advice [email protected]
  3. unless you have had proper x-rays done don't go panicking. Puppies are rough and can hurt themselves, rest him for quite a while, keep him thing and no acting like a lunatic for quite a few weeks. ED/HD is banded about a bit too often these days.
  4. how about a big female Malinois? In Vic but happy to transport if she's a good fit, get them to email me at [email protected] she's a muscly bitch but an absolute smoocher, single dog home is a good one too for Scooby. Doesnt dig, escape or nusience bark but I wont be sending a dog to farm fencing or 3 foot fencing anyway.
  5. oh brilliant I got that day off for holidays hee hee
  6. The ridgeback club run a great day I haven't been in a long time ... going to have to take the old Mal back there she needs a good run :D

    Shy Puppy

Remember there is a difference between shy and genuinely fearful. The vet saw your pup under a very stressful situation and your dog is still developing. Don't let the comment consume your life but just keep in your mind you don't treat your dog like you would every other because he just needs a little more guidance and confidence.
  8. you yourself had concerns about this bitch's health status and still proceeded with the mating using your own dog? A vet cannot predict what can happen but to show such nonchalance at dead puppies is incredible.
  9. I've been seeing some problems on group FB sites actually, one mother had a DA dog handed to her from this group untested and it attacked another dog, then they wouldnt take the dog back. Enough pressure from FB people it ended up sorted, I see a lot of complaints, they seem to have no clue about any proper process
  10. I would go a totally raw diet, like the Vets All Natural. You can mix any supplements you need into it quite easily and control the protein source/fat content.
  11. half the litter born dead and the vet doesnt see it as an issue? I would be finding another vet. Something is not right between the length of whelping and the amount of stillborn is a bad sign right there. Just remember to let your mentoree know that the natural process has some nasty outcomes, and if you want live healthy dogs you need to intervene.
  12. I know a lot of people use dog walkers, my point was using one at such a delicate age both physically and mentally. Good to hear her operation went well, pups can be surprisingly resilient in most things.
  13. It's all very well saying that there is someone to take them, and I do see the people who take them. I also see how emotional these people become when reality sets in about how bad the dog is. You see them torn between the social pressure of having to keep dealing with this 'rescue' dog and their own stress at the dog ripping their life apart. I also am sick to death of excusing dog behavior ... oh it has to have been neglected/beaten/frightened etc so lets give it some leeway in how it behaves. Dogs have wonderfully malleable temperaments at times and can be pulled out of unsocial behaviors that have been learned if foster carers have at least a few basic skills. I don't feel sorry for dogs that display fear behaviors because it doesnt help them in the long term, I would rather pull them out of their shell and see that bright spark in their eye when they realise life isn't all bad after all and its better to be happy. Guilt tripping needs to go. No desperation grabs, no 'oh take him/her otherwise they will DIE!!' type crap because guess what, at least one other will be in their place within a few hours. I actually just went to do a prelim temp test on a big crossbreed who supposedly is a terror ... very quick turn around to a perfectly behaved, calm dog when I just gave her basic structure and guidance. The video above, I agree with the trainer the dog was not that frightening ... I have had worst in my own house as a surrender. BUT in saying that if there was no person suitably qualified to help that dog available then there is nothing wrong with euthing the dog for its own welfare. Remember dogs repertoire of expressing their inner feelings is extremely limited and we have to make provisions that a dog frightened out of its head in such an extreme environment will snap and bare it's teeth, particularly some breeds. The fact it didnt flip out or launch to take a chunk out of the trainer is always a good start.
  14. I do agree with you Cosmolo. There seems to be almost a rabid fashion of just saving EVERYTHING! Bung it from foster to foster, adopt it out quick and be a hero, despite the fact the dog has exhibited some shocking behaviors. My rule is if the dog cannot go to the average dog owner without being a public nusience or a danger to others/itself it should not. I recommended one dog recently as not for rehoming, no one had realised the dog had been backyard protection trained. Showed it a sleeve it went ballistic trying to rip down fencing to get to it and hit it like a freight train with great precision and skill. Otherwise, reasonably well mannered easy to get along with dog, our first hint was he hated the foster carers partner and kept escalating. I took in a dog from interstate, within a week it had ripped a window out, broke out of a vet cage while highly medicated and screamed if he couldnt see me for an instant (as in the other side of a bench) He was also starting to guard me within a few days. Euthanasia is becoming a dirty word and I think it needs to stop. There needs to be SOME line drawn somewhere, and for lack of a better term, quality control. Warehousing or shifting on liablities are becoming all too often these days and the new owners are usually the ones that suffer for it. There is an opportunity for a dog to be thoroughly tested before passed onto a new family, unlike free to good homers or cheapies in the paper. Temp tests need to start being taken seriously, training in foster care as well, otherwise it's just being a dog recycler under a warm and fuzzy name. Consideration also has to be taken for the dog - long term kenneling/foster care effects, suitability to be rehomed at all and if the behaviors will be managable. A dog like Koalathebears foster needs an experienced owner, but then again so do most dogs really that have a few old bad habits. She's one of many out there obviously doing her duty when fostering to and making the dog able to be rehomed, giving it a chance with at least the basics and that is awesome. More fostering like that needs to be done.
  15. if he's not finishing it he's not hungry. I would either put it in a treat ball or just dont feed him until you get home.

    Boyan

We had to put our young man Boyan to sleep today. After a lengthy process he had a problem we just couldn't fix plus ensure him a decent life that a working Malinois deserves ... My sweet man the universe decided to deal you that hand of a strong mind but not body. You went to sleep in your mummy and daddies arms today, of to go join grandad Aras and terrorise everyone. I miss him so much. I have now lost 3 dogs in under 12 months
  17. http://www.optimumpet.com.au/optimum-for-dogs/view-all-dog-products/optimum-adult-%28dry%29.aspx no wheat and its a supermarket food but it does have corn http://www.nutrience.com/au/products/dog/dry_new/original_older_large.php have a look also at the Eagle Pack Holistic Select which are restricted ingredients dog food in wet and dry
  18. This is from the vet pharmacy website As for people complaining about vets mark ups, without making money they cannot exist. It's not cheap running a vet clinic I dont know why everyone expects everything for almost free these days
  19. better let AAPS know that as they have a Sloughi x listed here in Vic ... looks more like anatolian mix http://www.petrescue.com.au/view/157410
  20. I'm more curious why you're not out walking your own puppy, instead this is now an issue with the dog walker. Socialisation is also about bonding with your dog. Go visit that pup as much as you can in hospital so it can bond with you, not sit in a cage bored for another week. Liability insurance for businesses like this can sometimes include accidents but mostly they are for true negligence on behalf of the employee. Saying that you accepted their conditions of no responsibility taken when you sent the pup off with a stranger so really suing them will probably come end up with you forking out more then you get if anything at all considering you really have no proof of their wrong doing. This is a reason I dont let other people take my dogs out of my sight, even my family.
  21. tramadol turned my Malinois into some movie creature ... wide bug eyes, pacing and scuttling about ... I swear if you shone a torch onto her she would have hissed and flashed off in a blur.
  22. I have used Norocarp with a few dogs with no visible side effects, Tramadol was a disaster (saying that a working Mal in a lot of pain is always a disaster)
  23. The pug is actually from a breeder in Geelong, we have spoken to her about rehoming little precious to mum and she's happy with it. Labrador is currently being fostered very generously by a registered lab breeder in Geelong and he's having a BLAST! 12 other labradors to play with, mud, paddocks, this dog is in serious heaven here! I'm going to feel bad rehoming him lol Malinois is still here, she's been seen by a working Mal breeder and we think someone has done a serious once over on her physically as she's so suppressed when it comes to play. Shame because he has working homes ready for a good dog, but we shall see what Miss Scooby will decide to do.
