  1. off the advance and onto something better. Royal Canin small breed puppy or Eagle pack small breed puppy they are wheat free. I think the RC is a little better on protein and oils as well as palatability so give it a try. Change the food gradually over a week and keep up with the fresh chicken as well. The vet should scrape the ears - if they dont find a new vet. They should get a sample and put it under the microschope to find out exactly WHAT is causing the problem. If you kill off everything in the ear you run the risk of more infections down the road.
  2. not saying all but as a trainer I see quite a few with a good strong bark on them and they use it frequently!
  3. dammit I HATE being unemployed or I'd snap one up bugger bugger bugger
  4. Christ! I would be going for Eagle Pack for a pup like that and give some chicken carcasses to gnaw on. Backyard breeding at its best eh ETA Actually my Bordeaux I raised on EP Giant puppy and for him it was fabulous. For my Rotty he has always been on Eagle Pack and i have not noticed it grow him too quickly compared to the Mastiff. RC is the only food that doesn't turn his skin rotten either (EP makes him greasy and smell putrid) and has helped him maintain desperately needed muscle tone. I now have the DDB on RC as well and it helped him muscle out from 2yrs onwards
  5. well what floats your boat? DO you want grooming, a dog that can jog or one to just hang around with you at work/home is there a size limit?
  6. I wouldnt drag - you get an opposition response from the dog. Dont use a corrective chain and start in your front yard. It can also help if the dog is not fed at all for the day except this time. Leave the leash on the dog and walk away then encourage the dog to follow you - feed a little bit. Repeat until you get closer to the fence and gradually pick up the leash. Now the trick is to act like a loony. Yep. High pitched, and tempt her with her favourite toys and food. When she is rip rearing to go then run out with her onto the footpath and then run back - increase her fun a little at a time until you have her going on the footpath (oh and hold the leash when you're out on the footpath!) Conversely another dog you could borrow that is a highly enthusiastic, dare I say even a little out of control, could do the trick too. Let them play outside in the yard then run out onto the footpath with the other dog - the staffy will probably follow. Dont make it look like a set up dont get upset or disheartened dont get angry at the dog - the only things to come out of you are embaressing squeaky noises yes you will be labelled a mad person by your neighbours but do it for the dog ... think of the dog *sniff*
  7. Hmm pulling rottweiler eh - I wage $10 I can have the dog walking nicely in under 10 minutes
  8. meat 'meal' is the processed form of fresh meat. Meat by product meal is what you should be aiming to avoid. I have an issue with Pro Plan it is horribly full of fillers and do not use fresh meat. Try Royal Canin been using it for years
  9. http://www.dachsiedowns.com http://www.lowenhyte.com Luvadaky - [email protected] kleinfreund - [email protected] http://www.gumberri.com/sebdah/ http://www.users.bigpond.com/pawsaway/index.htm http://www.geocities.com/annsdachies/ http://www.geocities.com/searow_1/index http://www.dachshund.co.nr some miniature dachshund breeders in WA Prices will vary because of lines, breeding and quality. Also be careful you want to aim for health tested parents who are of a healthy shape and back length, and the breeder has properly socialised the pups to things - then there is microchip, worming, vet check, vaccination and pedigree papers (always demand to have pedigree papers provided with your puppy). $400 seems a little cheap to me. remember too Dachys are BARKY little dogs, I mean very barky if untrained or bored. They are sweet little dogs but their original jobs was to go down holes and pull out badgers so they can be a little dominant and stubborn at times (but geeze they are cute ) a good breeder should also give you an exercise regime to help prevent spinal/leg problems and make sure you get a very good diet. biggest thing to remember - a fat dachshund is a suffering dachshund. keep him or her as lean as possible and dont let people berate you 'oh your dog is too thin' your dog has a unique shape that is not in any way built to handle chubby. Thin dogs live longer, are active for longer and if you feed a controlled healthy diet less instances of pancreatitis, arthritis, skin problems, tooth infections and ear infections.
  10. I know. And in all seriousness they say 'dont you know every day you leave her entire you increase her risk" ummm I'm not pumping chemicals into her I'm leaving her naturally formed uterus and ovaries IN HER BODY Ahh yes brainwashing at its best.
  11. I still havn't speyed my bitch at nearly 5 and still get berated by vets oh she'll get cancer and die. FFS its not THAT common otherwise no one would breed. I kept her entire for work purposes. I personally like large breeds to be speyed a little later like 8-12 months but nothing wrong with doing it at 5-6 months. up to you ultimately but I like a dog to mature with itself in tact before just desexing for the sake of management.
  12. there was no erring on the side of caution - they told me to give him as much pain killers to keep him comfortable and PTS when he couldnt get up. If it wasnt for people here on DOL Diesel would be at the bridge by now. I feel so bad even though I spent every last cent I had buying him whatever vets told me he needed and basically I was lining my bosses pocket. He took me for a right sucker - sure have more meds *ching ching* - then questioned why I had to keep bringing him into work with me (it was a vet clinic) as space should be reserved for paying clients ;) he begrudgedly accepted the fact I couldnt leave a crippled dog at home to lie in the dirt mid winter. I was lifting him and watching him scream trying to even take a piddle. Poor boy had to reteach himself how to wee once he was off his meds (OK i giggled once when he tried too hard to cock his leg and landed in a bush *blush*) I was angry how they told me to give up I was angry that they made me feel inferior because I refuse to sever the nerve in his leg or take out a morgage and let vets hack up his bones in order to 'fix' the problem I was angry when I went into the acupuncturist and she went 'ooooh look at those x-rays, you're a bit of a lemon - but he's fixable" because I felt that I could have killed a puppy if I had listened to the others.
  13. Eagle Pack or Royal Canin giant plus the odd chicken carcass
  14. at the moment good. His x-rays were looked at by many vets and they all just shook their heads and told me he had weeks - it was conventional medicine was in effect sealing his fate as well. natural therapies all the way and thinned him down, build his hind muscle - I think he has a few years not a few weeks like I was told. As long as his muscles hold his hips he will be fine. His pain has decreased quite a lot as well with the acupuncture he can walk as far as the other two and even run around with them for a while. The alternative therapies vet does not see why he cannot live a reasonably normal lifespan. He's just not going to win any beauty contests too soon
  15. dispensing fee usually covers things like stocking, handling, extra containers, free syringes given etc. Yeah my clinic had minimum $15 dispensing fee AND the boss charged that to staff too. It really is stupid considering a cat worm tablet ended up being about $19
  16. I think most of the psychological harm comes from owners perpetuating the dogs behavior through their own - then we see it as the dog has been permanently 'traumatised' by something. I'm not discounting the fact a dog can become traumatised but many instances can be reversed or avoided.
  17. Aquadent contains Xylitol and prevents the over breeding of bad bacteria in the dogs mouth and apparently prevents tartar. You do have to add 10mls to every litre of drinking water. We had it at the clinic it wasnt very popular and Xylitol is apparently toxic to dogs but the Virbac rep told me it wasnt anywhere near levels that could cause a problem - your choice how about a little finger brush and some doggy toothpaste. Tiny dogs do not always use all their teeth and some accumulate tartar even though you are feeding bones - the trivialities of the un-wolf shaped mouth. Yep up the vege component and mince your own meat. Even light mince will be fatty, buy whichever meat you like and either chop finely or whiz in the food processor - cant have added preservatives either!
  18. gentle leaders have to be quick snug around the dogs throat in order to work properly - they should not cause 'pain' per say
  19. What more do you want to write? If a cat is coughing and overweight you cannot claim his overall health is good. I was just wondering at what point you finally take your animals to a professional?
  20. I gave a 40kg rottweiler 1 phenergen tablet a day and it settled his itch. I trust it and dont go straight for a high dose since most of these products only advocate 1 tablet for an adult human per 24 hours
  21. vet time soon? I'm just wondering how long you are going to fiddle with his diet and internet research before you get a health check for your animal from a professional?
  22. Schutzhund club is usually the way to go, Herr Rottweiler does the tracking/trailing for NDTF if you want to buzz him I find tracking with food keeps the dogs head where its meant to be - glued to the ground My Mali loves it
  23. ask the vet but retained baby teeth should be removed if they look like they're causing trouble
  24. my vet told me phenergen (antihistamine) is safe for dogs and available over the counter from the chemist ring about dosage rates for a sheltie
