  1. go better both of those foods contain grains and low protein. You will save money in the long run going for a good food and it wont just go out the back end! Bones are edible bones. Not big marrow bones, so small, chewable bones with meat and fat attached. Chicken carcasses are great, or necks, as you can pick them up cheap. Nah lamb is fine I have 3 dogs that eat chicken, lamb, and beef no one has problems. If they are hungry nothing wrong with fat! remember dogs and people are different. Dogs need and LOVE a bit of fat on the meat (dont go overboard if its a huge chunk trim it down to avoid problems later or upset tummy) but most butchers offcuts are oddments, ends and mis-cut meat.
  2. nothing wrong with feeling ribs. Better a little underweight then over as long as the dog is healthy, shiny coat etc. What biscuits are you feeding? Try and get the best you can, avoid supermarket foods as they are very high in cheap fillers, grains, starches etc. Protein will keep a dog happy. Try chicken carcasses/wings/necks, lamb flaps, offcuts, etc dont bother cooking the meat for them they dont need that. They will be better off with raw on the bone meats with skin, tendon etc attached! sloppy poos means something is running the dog through. Thats probably why she is hungry as well the food is going right through. I would definately change the biscuits, try Royal Canin, Eagle Pack, or some people like Orijen as well. change gradually, feed more raw meat on the bone and your dogs wont be hungry :p
  3. pmed you with details of possible help Julie
  4. there are ways to train him out of this - it probably will require an e-collar though so think about it. would you concede to having him in a run instead of rehoming and try a trainer to come out and try some stock proofing? If he will attack sheep how do you think he will go with other domestic pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, cats etc?
  5. yikes if it needs surgery we never left it that long. In one case we taped the ear to the head to prevent movement at all but that was a one off because they couldnt do surgery for a day. I would get that done ASAP before it gets worst.
  6. it is definaately so much better for the little one. I give Diesel a human glucosamine/chondoiten tablet and a fish oil tablet and he's doing so much better then with anti-inflammatories. I even found pentosan/cartrophen to be rubbish on him. Keep him nice and skinny too, that will make a huge difference. A little underweight will help him and extend his life, if he's cold put a jumper on him.
  7. I love Royal Canin for all my dogs. They have a GSD formula but also just a large breed formula and I have seen many stunning shepherds on that food
  8. put him on a bland diet and start introducing foods from there. He may be sensitive to something but being a piggy just keeps eating. Got one of those here I think he could be on deaths door and still be a canine vacuum cleaner
  9. If the pup is unreturnable make her at least do SOME of the work. She is going to have to keep up the training anyway throughout the dogs life. You can make habits but she can break them in an instant and then either 1) blame you for not training the dog or 2) get rid of it because its just 'one of those bad dogs' your mother is an adult she has to take responsibilities for her own actions.
  10. did your mother not research before she got this pup? sounds like she should give it back to the breeder ... was it from a breeder or a shelter
  11. remember giant breeds mature more slowly then others. The biggest mistake was the old fashioned 'add calcium to everything' adage. Well you CAN overdo calcium, a LOT actually. If you want put the dog on something like Eagle Pack giant breed puppy which has the correct balance for a giant breed. Supplement with things like sardines, lamb flaps, chicken pieces/carcasses etc but I wouldnt go adding supplements at all if you have a good food. As for home made giant puppy food if he has had a bad start at least give him the right food until he's a little more mature then give him a home made diet. Grow slowly he wont be a full adult until 2 1/2 - 3 years old!
  12. they are not obligate carnivores, yes they can eat SOME vegetable matter but saying that a dog needs proteins and fats from animal sources. There are varying degrees in that group you listed and if you look at some animals they will choose a meat source over a vegetable source any day because nutritionally it is better for them. Dogs are not only hunters but scavengers and being omnivores helped them survive the tough times, not because they really require a high amount of variety in their diet. If you own a dog you owe it the best possible diet so raw meaty bones should be included. If they make you ill then freeze them and give them frozen - carcasses, lamb flaps, offcuts, etc - the smell/feel is gone and they are so much easier to give like that. Ex was a vego Try Royal Canin, dont let them get fussy. Put it down, give them 10 minutes, then take it away. Try that for a week, no other food, and they will eat. I would stay away from anything that is 'supermarket line' type foods as it is full of cheap fillers and really doesnt do your dog good in the long run.
  13. i thought Evo was only sold through Pets Paradise and Pet goods Direct/pet n vet direct stores (also owned by PP)
  14. see this is where i wouldnt only because one day an over enthusiastic pup may take a bite of your arm instead. Or another dog may mistake a kids sleeve as fun and take a mouthful. sometimes we have to be conscientious as to what we teach our dogs and the far reaching implications. As for playing tug Steve had a ball with my DDB in the middle of the guide dog training centre The law is trying to prevent problems and illegal bitework. Frankly bitework should be more structured and have clubs registered with the government but I wouldnt be slapping a DD on every dog that has done bitework. There are some pet dogs out there that are more dangerous then trained bitework dogs so its not a guarentee you will create a psychopath.
  15. Just make sure the bones/protein you feed isnt too fatty, I sometimes cut the fat off and feed it to the skinny one
  16. from another post best stripping diet 1 carcass each for afternoon tea a couple of cups of brown/white rice mixed boiled with carrot, brocolli stems, lettuce leaves, stock cube, zuchinni, celery etc whatever is leftover. Dont go the best bits give the left overs! now when they get the rice they get it all cooked up, pour some warm water over it to make a soup. Fills them up and they are not hungry. If they are, tough. Dont worry about them it can take their stomachs a while to shrink down but the cooked rice in a soup form will fill them up no worries. They will lose weight in no time. If they dont then give them half a carcass instead of a whole. You can add some flax seed oil to their rice mix to keep their coats nice and shiny. just to add, I would feed them twice a day as well, not just once. Give them the rice/vege mix in the morning then the carcass in the arvo.
  17. i still feed two meals a day even when dieting, no sense in decreasing the food then making them wait twice as long. Then they start stealing or fighting. keep the food the same every day, as much as you can. Chop change days dont work as my grandmother 12kg jack russell can attest to

  19. what breed and what age? give her tiny amounts of food, roo mince is not complete. I would try something like Royal Canin or Eagle Pack. If she doesnt eat then she misses out until the next meal and so on until she gets the idea.

  21. sure he doesnt have an intussusception? They can be hard to pick up on x-rays but can cause blockage and pain take him for a second opinion or even open him up ASAP to see whats going on
  22. there is Dexafort: This preparation contains two esters of dexamethasone, a fluoro-methyl derivative of prednisolone, which is a potent glucocorticoid with minimal mineralocorticoid activity. Dexamethasone has ten to twenty times the anti-inflammatory activity of prednisolone. Following intramuscular injection the soluble ester of dexamethasone sodium phosphate is rapidly absorbed and hydrolysed to the parent alcohol giving a prompt response which is maintained for approximately 48 hours. The insoluble phenylpropionate ester is more slowly absorbed and hydrolysed and its presence extends the total period of activity of the product to seven to ten days. and Dexapent: Action Powerful glucogenic, anti-inflammatory, antistress, antishock activity. Its actions are very similar to prednisolone, but the activity is approximately 5 to 8 times greater. Unlike prednisolone, its mineralocorticoid activity is minimal. Its anti-inflammatory effect is particularly potent, 30 times more than cortisone. Because of its activity, dosages are significantly reduced. Absorption is rapid (20 minutes after intramuscular injection). Its activity lasts about 48 hours, although it is mostly excreted 24 hours after injection.
  23. yup I seem to have a turd rotty ... he plays this game where he woofs at the back door then scurries off. If I look out the window he does a massive smile and rotty wiggle like 'ahhh made you look' two of the most common breeds. Anything black and tan is immediately a rotty cross, anything else is a staffy. THe number of pure rotties/staffies involved is probably miniscule but hey, lets not let facts get in the way of a good story shall we
  24. Something that will probably revolutionise 'human gentle and effective' dog training gotta love the marketing department.
  25. vetmedin I think you would be stuck with but ask the vet if there is a human equivalent or combination. Vets can write prescriptions for human pharacies as well. As for the Metacam what is it for? Arthritis?
