  1. As far as I can see 'domestic animal business' means - pet shop - boarding kennel/cattery - animal shelter - dog/cat breeder http://www.egipps.vic.gov.au/webforms/AS-F11.pdf remember it also states 'if authorised under that registration' so security companies/kennels would be the ones that would have it in their provision I assume. ETA - a little OT but have you seen many places now have a list of prohibited breeds (like doggy daycares) that their 'insurance' wont cover! And not one of them is a shutzhund breed
  2. You've hit on an excellent point here Jesskah and a rather important one. So many owners are lulled into a false sense of security when the take their dog to obedience class or hand over the endless barrage of treats to make the dog behave. They dogs have little respect for the owner, but know that he/she represents an instant gratification whenever they command it. Pet hate ... owner tells dog a command 10+ times, then giggles when dog doesnt follow through and leaves it oh my dog is obedient, but sometimes he doesnt want to listen. Owner is not a leader for the dog. Remember also the dog can use obedience to train YOU! Dog walks up to owner, does a lovely sit and owner pulls out a treat for the dog. So who commanded who? THe dog commanded the owner for a treat, but for 90% of people it looks like the dog is a very well trained animal. Frankly its a very smart dog who learned to get what it wanted through obedience commands. Remember ... the only dangerous dog is one that makes up its own mind. Its what I tell all my clients. If a dog is left to its own devices and takes on the role of leader then expect the unexpected.
  3. be wary of power formulas. THey are not just high fat they are actually high fast metabolizable energy. A couple of reps have told me that if weight gain is the primary concern to mix foods or try something different as the power formulas can hype them up further. I put my Malinois on teh EP power once she was buzzing round the yard like a ferret on speed how thin is your dog though? Is his spine, ribs and hips protruding? is he under muscled? if not then I wouldnt bother a slightly under weight dog is always better then a chubby one.
  4. could be a reaction to the sutures or she has inflamed the muscular layer by running. desexing is abdominal surgery she should not be playing for 5 days at least (depending on procedure) Unless its infected there is no point bathing it. Leave it be, lock her up and see if it settles, if not back to the vet for a check up
  5. why would you need an anauesthetic to do a full blood screen? Its simply a little more blood taken from the dogs vein??? I would go to a chiropractor and make sure the dog is as thin as possible. Maybe he is just a little too heavy and his spine/pelvis needs and adjustment I would put him on supplements anyway it cant hurt him. FIsh oil, chondroiten and glucosamine is the way to go
  6. Royal Canin does the trick I find, the large breed adult seems to keep weight on well. Yes what did you feed in the BARF? have you tried just one meat or something like carcasses, lamb flaps, beef brisket etc
  7. sounds like your friend needs a second opinion! There is something going on and needs finding, how about some blood work, urine tests and x-ray?
  8. where was she from and what were the living conditions like? It could be something stemming from puppyhood Also what is she currently on food wise? What is her diet and how many times a day does she get fed
  9. agree here. A lot of people love to think their dogs will fight to the death in sheer loyalty but the dog is probably more protecting itself and its posession - the owner. Well if it is within its nature to do so. Although it is surprising that although a dog can make a huge show, so many are easy to back down if you simply show you are not rattled. For a dog, if you cannot do the job, they will do it for you and in the manner they see fit. So yes a dog that is lower in the pack structure, its 'leader' is incapable of protecting and the dog has it within its nature to do so will take charge of a situation and warn. I wouldnt bet my life on it though. He's still a baby. Let him mature he will do it on his own. Even my lemon of a rottweiler shows territoriality when I'm not in the yard or car - although when I am in there none of them will bark or charge if someone approaches the gate/window and when I open the doors they have tails wagging. You can have it both ways and its quite a weight off your mind. We even had a party of about 20 guests, fire in a washing machine drum and people having a bit of fun. The dogs didnt worry at all and in fact joined in - I was there, I didnt have an issue and hence they didnt either.
  10. A piece of paper is the proof. you may have bought what was advertised as AmStaff but without papers there is no proof. They are technically one and the same. Writing 'staffy' as a description is not a breed, you are pretty much describing a type - and its very open to interpretation which has happened here. because there is no pedigree papers, and how many people are roarting the system by chipping pitties and crosses as amstaffs, staffies and SBT cross. In my eyes its negligent for a vet to write 'staffy' as a breed especially on a microchip. It may be one womans opinion but he has the stereotypical look of a 'red nosed' APBT. He may very well be an APBT and you were not told by the breeders who may have fibbed in order to get around the laws. As has been said when you get him back and he is deemed an APBT you will simply have to comply with restricted breed laws to keep him.
  11. does his information state 'staffy' or american staffordshire terrier? 'staffy' is open to interpretation. Get the vet who originally vaccinated him and the breeder to confirm what he is meant to be, that will be a plus. Was he originally stolen from you or escaped his yard? Is there any charges against him as well such as menacing or attack, or was he just found wandering the streets?
  12. Jules Schutzhund is a sport, not training attack dogs. Getting a security license and buying a big mean dog is an easier way to go for the meatheads then something like Schutzhund which requires dedication and skill. Do they test people for mental stability when they buy a dog in general? no. Forking out big $ for a working line dog (who the breeder will run through the ringer and question before they even consider giving you a pup) join and learn from a club (who will also run you through the ringer before you join and even after you have joined) is a hard yard. Fees are also fairly pricey for training, equiptment, at least once a week training and travelling. If your dog doesnt pass temp test you dont learn schutzhund - so its not as if a bunch of blokes get together on the weekend and set dogs on each other to create DDs, just like any other sport.
  13. dutch shepherds are a whole separate thing, and yup people can become snooty towards each other. Eh just avoid the dipsticks. seriously dont dwell on it, if they didnt mention it then it was something stupid or petty.
  14. not much meat on a duck head but give it a go. I threw one to my Malinois when I did my duck and she looked at me like "what the HELL is that and dont tell me you expect me to eat it" rottie on the other hand swallowed it whole
  15. Thats what I mean. Schutzhund is not all bitework there is an obedience and tracking component that counts for just as much as the bitework. Flyball, agility, lure coursing, schutzhund its ALL based on the dogs prey drive. You play tug of war with your dog after flyball when the dogs hyped up well how is that different to the dog tugging a sleeve? Throw a bare arm in front of a Sch dog and it will look at you like 'huh, wheres my toy' just as any other sport dog would. I've seen dogs at flyball so hyped up one turned around and bit the handler on the knee. Hey dogs are dogs, accidents happen and as I said I have nothing against flyball or any dog sport I think they all have their place BUT from the lawmakers POV it could be another thing thats targeted since the dogs are playing tug and so hyped up. Remember what the media is like - see what you want to see, hear what you want to hear then plaster it from here to tomorrow. Thats how the pitbull died, thats how Schutzhund will die and thats how most dog related things will die in Australia. Anita I dont have anything against PP. Each to their own, as long as it works for the dog. But where I live I am soaked in a big following of PP - and yes a couple of so called well respected trainers have basically told clients if the dog cant learn from their method then its just bad. Mention Schutzhund, security or working dogs and you think you had sprayed a vampire with holy water the amount of hissing and cursing that comes out. I'm sorry if I came across tarring every pos trainer with the same brush that was not my intention... but look at where more people are going - shops are filled with equipment 'gentle this and that', check chains are 'cruel', prongs are mind shatteringly abusive and of course big working breeds are dangerous. My rottie and DDB passed the Delta Society Therapy Dog test and are now registered as therapy dogs, but I didnt appreciate being told during my training day that 'oh choker chains are nasty, cruel things and I would never touch one' from a person who has never trained dogs before. All I had to say is 'there is a time and place for everything' and the sour look I got was rediculous. Why such intolerance towards something in the dog world from a society that has so much clout? As for security officers being able to have Sch dogs - do you know how much it is to become a security officer now? Vic government cocked that up right royally and made it a joke. As for having a Sch dog as a working dog, sorry it doesnt work like that. Sch dogs are sport dogs, not security dogs. I would be hard pressed to borrow someones Sch dog to go do a nights work out the front of a few clubs unless the dog was above and beyond just a sport dog but even then it lacks training. Also how does owning a security license make you a more responsible handler? There is no dog handlers component of your training course at all so all they really want you to do is fork out for the refresher course and your 3 year reg - bye bye $800 for nothing. Some guards out there are hard pressed to dress themselves let alone handle a dog (I was a guard for 3 years and I also did some K9 so I've seen some of Vic finest ) Schutzhund clubs did the responsible things and KEPT THE MEATHEADS OUT OF THE SPORT!!!! They were doing people a favour by not allowing macho wankers somewhere to bite train their dogs. This is why I'm angry, again the responsible people are the ones being attacked, the trained dogs are the ones being attacked and names will be dragged through the mud for nothing. Why should they suddenly stop the sport? What will they do with the dogs? Explain to the dog that suddenly its not going to do any more of its favourite game - some people have paid a lot of money for these dogs too and have plans for breeding, trialling etc why should they just stop everything because some ignorant pen pusher made a law that was barely advertised. What is wrong with having clubs that are officially recognised and registered with the local council, officers come do a check every now and again to make sure everything's hunky dory (which southern cross definately were AND are even listed still on the City of Casey website) and leave it at that. Just like obedience, agility etc club Its a shame, a damn shame but I know that only a minority in the dog world will probably raise their hand in support of John and Southern Cross. As usual the old 'its not my thing' principle will apply and until the wolf is on THEIR doorstep will they step up and cry out. I cried last night, I really sat at my computer and cried when I heard this. It stabbed me through the heart that everything I love in the dog world is being attacked and victimised. Well to all those people who have never seen Schutzhund in action - now you probably never will. Hop on youtube or take an international flight because wave goodbye if the council has its way. This will also make us lose valuable genetics in this country in working dog circles if this passes, but again, I think the blinkers are on for quite a few people and I am saddened to think some others may even be glad its out. No one will answer anything like this on a forum so there is no point asking. Same as people who ask 'do you own a pitbull' on the forum and wonder why others dont reply. People risk their reputation, money and dogs life answering questions like these.
  16. really they are few and far between people barely know what your dog is let alone have a whinge about it seriously dont worry about people. Remember the empty cart is the one that makes the most noise :D
  17. what ... the ANKC wont recognise an old sport over something new and more 'warm and fuzzy'. Shows how out of touch the decision makers are. I have nothing against freestyle its an excellent persuit for so many breeds and quite a skill. But Schutzhund has a place as much as freestyle does, in fact more so since it encourages responsible ownership and control of large working breeds.
  18. yes well what do we expect when 'doggy freestyle' is accepted as a recognised sport over schutzhund we need to wake up ... fast.
  19. nothing. Just some idiot with their knickers in a twist over something probably petty and stupid. Dont let it get to you, if you are comfortable with the dog and breeder then tell everyone else to 'jog on' *raspberry* See now you have to get a Malinois
  20. not here in victoria, sec dogs are still DD according to legislation. Its all this purely positive rubbish. Its taken things too far. Too many people have BS'd about how pp is the 'one size fits all training' and how any dog that doesnt fit is just a bad dog. Many vets wouldnt know dog behavior if you beat them with the books about them and many are quick to point out 'bad dogs'. Yet they want owners to lock up their dogs until over 16 weeks of age and then expect them to cope with the world being hideously undersocialised during critical period Why are we not banning flyball? It teaches a dog to madly chase an object and many owners play tug of war with the dogs afterwards. Its not nearly as controlled as Schutzhund why are flyball clubs not being persecuted?? Its bizarro world. Its rediculous and I am standing up, putting my name to the fight to save Schutzhund. HR is right, we let this happen kiss our working breeds goodbye because thats the next step. The GSDCV should stand up, the belgian shepherd club should stand up, the dobermann club should stand up, all breed mastiff club, rottweiler club, ... fight for the rights of dogs to be dogs and people to train their dogs. Owners of Giant Schnauzers, Bouviers, BRTs, DDBs, cane corsos, bandogs, ambulls, etc stand up and say 'no we will not be persecuted, we will not be next in line to lose our dogs and rights". You are right Erny, power comes from unity and numbers. You dont have to love schutzhund to see where this will go to next and who will lose in the next sh*t fight. This is where your dog rego fees are going :D rangers wont pick up stray dogs or stop my neighbour having 5 little dogs in a unit yet they waste money on this public spectacle
  21. because its hard, because we have been isolated for so long we let our dogs slip that they cannot do their original functions or one of. The GSDC will not support schutzhund. Most GSDs could not even pass the temp test let alone gain IPO/SCH3 these days. I dont know many Malinois people who are against it, then again this is one of their primary reasons for being bred. we are not a culture of working dog owners like europe and USA. We are pet people now in Aus hence why majority shy away from anything that looks like it might hurt us. What a pack of bloody nancys. Puppy farmers are given a pat on the back but people who love their dogs and train them to an international standard are dragged through the courts What the hell is wrong with people these days. In over 5 years I have seen more aggressive and insane pet dogs then out of control schutzhund and security dogs. I get the jeebies walking into some peoples houses as the untrained spoiled diddums of this world do a hell of a lot more damage then the schutzhund dogs ever will.
  22. yeah I got that far and started dribbling .... she also has a Lakenois litter coming too :D (why do I not live on a bloody farm)
  23. yup you sure will ... and she will be 5 years old in January ahh I miss Mali puppies ... been offered 3 in the past 12 months I'm getting SO tempted!
  24. you can park the car in a yard, wedge the doors open and let the dog explore at its own leasure for a while, then put some food in, then turn engine on etc. Take it slowly. Maybe a panel van/station wagon is easier as its less confined and feed him in the back with the door up
  25. great summer treats are wings/necks etc frozen into a big block of ice (like an icecream container/lunchbox size) and let the dogs play with the ice block
