  1. organic simply guarentees there is no pesticides or artificial chemicals, nothing more about the ingredient. How else are they going to have supermarket prices? They have to simply get whats available to them at the time at the right price from organic suppliers. I refuse to use anything with wheat in it anyway. At least with Raw you know what your dog is eating.
  2. they're bred to work and focus quite intently on their job - hence what makes them useful as gun dogs. A few old europeans had a couple of GSPs and they did a great job for most things they hunted. Quite hard dogs and great workers. pity more people dont hunt with their gun dogs.
  3. too much weight loss and I had to feed insane amounts. EP power - the Malinois was running in circles hyper I love EP for some dogs, the giant breed puppy is the only one I would feed a really heavy breed but for everything else I prefer RC, just wish I could afford it again
  4. JD19 that is so terrible that your lovely man has been diagnosed cavNrott is a wealth of information about these things so stick with her! *** And a little Diesel update ... We found an infection in one of his feet has been giving him grief! Great news (weird I know) but this is the cause of his hobbling, not his elbows as previously thought! Damn these dogs all they do is give us heart attacks
  5. mortgage your house if you want Robert Holmes to come and visit you ...
  6. There are varying degrees of pancreatitis what works for one dog can nearly kill another. Speak to your veterinarian about what IS allowed and work from there be it raw or kibble. The only thing with raw is you CANNOT guarentee the fat percentage that you are giving the dog. It varies from carcass to carcass and while you maybe cannot see a lot of fat on the food itself you do not know how much is exactly in the meat or marrow.
  7. I do the Pet Partners Delta program with 2 of my dogs. They want your dogs vaccinated because there are resident dogs or residents own animals that visit - they do not want an unvaccinated dog visiting and potentially spreading disease to those other animals. Thats the way it works as far as I know.
  8. For those in Melbourne Williamstown is also a great place to head to ... a lot of cafes (especially the chocolate cafe ) are dog friendly, the bike clubs congregate on the foreshore with their big bikes, there are kids, leashed dogs etc so for an arvo stroll its a great idea!
  9. We found a GREAT socialisation opportunity over the weekend - the Geelong foreshore! From Smorgys to the main swimming beach we encountered ... groups of children other dogs bikes Harley Davidsons wheelchairs a little car with carriages that drives on the footpath high performance cars people playing football a HELICOPTER boats and engine noise walking on a pier with water splashing underneath seagulls fish in the water All this for free ... so if you want to bomb proof your dogs head over to Geelong! All these activities continue with the nice weather and since you can walk up to them even with dogs its a great way to see how well you're training is working
  10. Erny you can also tell from the condition of the internal organs. Myxo bunnies are not healthy looking as Corvus said, they also tend to be quiet and unhappy rabbits or they exhibit flu like symptoms. Since Calici causes the rabbit to die from internal hemorrhaging you would quickly notice while cleaning that it is not well. Sick rabbits also tend to not flounce about the countryside but tuck themselves deep in burrows where only a ferret might pull them out. There is little to no risk but from other biochemical changes in the sick animals body I would not feed a diseased rabbit to a dog. If you worm your dogs and do not spill the gut contents of the rabbit, have a check of the overall condition etc there is little to worry about with parasites.
  11. rabbits are a game animal and a prey animal. Just because people have them in a society and show them wont detract from the fact they have another purpose - to be eaten. You have to realise we are TOO lucky in this country - that we can keep multitudes of animals for no purpose other then to exist for our own pleasure. I know a show breeder of ducks/geese who sold be some hatchlings - I said they were for the table and she shrugged and said 'what else would you have that many ducks for, just look after them right and give them a good life'. My OH was a commercial rabbit hunter they could do anywhere from 500-1000 in a day with ferrets, dogs and guns. Guess what - KFC also purchased their meat. Any rabbit that showed disease was humanely killed and turfed. Any rabbit that had its guts split in the cleaning process was also discarded. There is NO reason why rabbit should be so expensive (except the 'swanky' fashion slow food la di da rubbish thats happening lately) considering how little hunters get for them. Nothing wrong with eating rabbit, it should be replacing chicken with how common and accessible it is. Ferreting is also a day out with the family I'd eat a wild rabbit over a barn raised chemical laden super chook any day.
  12. crating is the way to go definately. Can I ask why you chose a pomeranian? Was it size or the fact they are a very human orientated breed? Poms want to be with you, they are a toy companion breed and you are pushing it away so it is confused. What is wrong with the crate being in the bedroom with you? Its giving the dog some comfort as well since it has been taken away early and is trying to cope at an age where it is not ready to. If you dont want a dog that is with you most of the time then reconsider the pom. Be very careful as well because poms are delicate and if it is jumping up and down it can break a bone especially at this age. They should not be allowed to jump across barriers or up./down furniture for their own sake. It could also be whining because it doesnt understand where to toilet and at 7 weeks it cannot hold on for a few hours. Maybe train it to a litter box with paper based cat litter in it? add a tissue with some wee on it to the litter box and encourage it to go there at night.
  13. you can get GPS collars in Australia, you can buy them through hunting supplies. Large small and even ferret sized Many pig and deer hunters use them in case the dog goes too far ahead or disappears
  14. until she learns NOT to pull, to give you better focus and too relax do not introduce her to other dogs. You are making problems for yourself. Dogs do not NEED to meet every dog they pass. If she is not calm she should not meet other dogs. You are not 'fixing' the problem you will actually just cement her behavior of snapping.
  15. with so many foods readily available why go out and by rodents? The frozen ones have to be carefully handled to prevent partial defrosting and making your animal sick and the live ones usually are slathered in chemicals to prevent parasites. Feeding live animals to your dogs or setting one animal on another is ILLEGAL. Soo much trouble for really no benefit.
  16. I agree indoor long hair. I dont feed anything with wheat or by product meal in it at all.
  17. stops as in completely backs away from pressure or stops as in pulls but cannot travel any further? a physical act only constitutes a correction if it stops the behavior. You see dogs walking down the street dragging their owners but they have a tight check chain on - there is no punishment there. Dogs that get regularly beaten by their owners stop seeing it as a punishment because they continue the behavior. Its all subjective. Witholding a treat is a punishment too for some dogs. This is a problem within dog training ... its what the trainer believes and contorts it to be. What one person sees as a way of training another sees as cruelty. What one person calls a potato another calls it potAto There are basic concepts to animal behavior. Its not black and white, its what effect that physical action has on the animal that dictates what it is. I slap my dogue on the side and he loves it, its a rough pat and he cuddles up for more - if I slapped another shy dog in the same manner it would probably shy and consider me hurting it when my own dog thinks of it as a reinforcer... potato, potAto ...
  18. wading at the beach was recommended, just up to his belly grab the shorts and thongs, take him for a wade!
  19. My rottweiler is only 16 months old... barely years and years. He has good and bad days, we know when he is in pain and not. I live with chronic pain myself as does my OH, there is bareable and then there is rediculous. Sheenygirl congrats that your doggy is doing so well!!! Remember there are always other options and exploring them can make a world of difference. Glad it has worked for you keep us posted
  20. my rottweiler benefits greatly from accupuncture, chiro and electro-therapy (stims the muscles and blood flow) he has 2 bad elbows and 2 bad hips.
  21. thats true settrlvr that or many animals go bananas when its applied. I dont use them at all unless a flea crops up (mums pom brought one down once) and even then I use Capstar tablets. Been here over 12 months, dogs, cats, rats and mice all over the suburb and I dont have a flea problem.
  22. call the ranger when it is at large and barricade any gaps you have. This dog needs to be controlled and the owner fined. Gaps under gates can be fixed with rubber sheeting screwed into the gate (acts in a similar fashion to those draft stopper strips for doors)
  23. There is monthly tablets like Sentinal Spectrum which does heart worm, intestinal worms and fleas. Make sure you heartworm test her before starting treatment. Clip the fur, if there is dying skin take it too a vet. If not, get some Ceterigen (purple spray) from farm or pet supplies and spray it on. You will have a purple dog for a while but it dries wounds well. Pick off any of the hair, icky scabs etc too to help healing.
  24. I love the second video where the Saluki is carrying the hare and the hawk still has a grip like 'NOOOO I found it first you're not taking my glory!" :p wonderful wonderful montages its such a shame we don't do this here in Australia.
  25. you need to seek professional trainers/behaviorists who have dealt with this problem before. Aggression is difficult to diagnose or 'cure' over the internet. Which area are you in there are a lot of trainers here recommended or take a look at our signatures if there is someone close to you
