  1. kibble is quite a concentrated food source and he wont need much as it is much richer then meat. You would be suprised how little dogs actually need, and remember his stomach is tiny!! You would be better off feeding him a chicken wing/neck then lamb to get him used to chewing and keeping his teeth clean :D
  2. I agree with Jeff there is no way a PP dog is a servicable dog in my eyes. PP misses fundamental facets of dog training (positive punishment etc) and hence you cannot guarentee a proofed dog. PP is ok for some things but to risk my life on a PP dog - no. no chance.
  3. If you are nervous about your dogs behavior PLEASE do not go to dogs you do not know. THat is a recipe for disaster and IMO negligent on your behalf. speak to a trainer first and find some good dogs to socialise with. Socialisation is not just exposing dogs to something it is about you showing your dog the right way to react around the stimulus. So just letting the him run around with dogs is not socialisation (well in a positive way any way) I would get the dog evaluated so you can see the signs and see why he snaps back. It doesnt matter about his previous life what matters is that the effort you put in funnels the dog in a direction you want in the long term.
  4. if she is negative for mites are you using something like Advocate or Revolution? She could still have them but the product reduces numbers. Also look at diet. Some dogs can be allergic to red meats, wheat and wheat relatives, colours, flavours etc so put her on an elimination diet if you have no already. I second the antihistamines, cortisone is not a long term fix at all. Phenergen is good and they sleep better on it too.
  5. ask your vet about how many people think advantage/frontline etc is put in the dog/cat food to eat. Yup. You would be suprised how many and I always made sure people knew not to feed it to them.
  6. some of those videos the tyres are the wrong size for the dog hows poor Cheeta doing a flip in the air and a faceplant! OMG that poor dog! I dont understand why displacements are not mandatory!
  7. just as a side note I have used one in Geelong. Be realistic about it as well it wont cure, it will manage. My rottweiler is thin, crooked legged and only surgery will reshape his poor legs BUT saying that I made the decision not to put a 46kg dog through months and months of painful surgeries when this did what we wanted - give him quality of life.
  8. I use a holistic vet for my 16 month old rottie who has both HD/ED. All 4 legs affected. He went from the euth needle at about 9 months of age to pain free bouncing Take a look at holistic vets in Perth - http://www.claremiddle.com/index.htm http://www.naturalvet.org/ these are two that are registered with the AVA
  9. Diesel just cried, licked his stomach or tried scratching it (like a horse ) and his appetite went down even for his favourite food. Also the poo was looking a little dodgy too. Thank goodness he's off them now
  10. wow they sure are working ways to bleed people dry these days arent they? over night, metacam, etc geez all the dogs we desexed got their shot of meloxicam and bounced out of there happy. Bucket collars on the ones that needed it and in nearly 12 months only 1 dog needed restitching (male rottweiler) Time to shop around a little more
  11. Puppies can learn a lot more then we give them credit for but in 16 weeks really how long a reliable stay can you teach. I think its important since Stay also teaches patience to the pup, and teaches them calm behaviors. Too many people leave training till later when its working against what the dog has learned in its critical period. The earlier the better! Although I am more on the track of not teaching 'stay' as a term but a release word instead and all commands such as sit, drop etc are to be followed until released. I find having most dogs reliably understand 'stay' as in 'I gave you X command and you are to stay in that position' is a little less effective for the average pet owning Joe then releasing your dog on command.
  12. that would be awesome, as much as possible even when you just think she's chilling out too to get a whole picture maybe she's a mild case of misinterpretation as well?!
  13. Iltby without viewing the dogs body language it can be difficult to make a review. If you guys could make some videos adn pop them on youtube that would make it easier - then we could pick it to death no but honestly when people write, they write their perception NO what is actually happening. We all do it its human nature. As for self medicating I meant with herbs. Rescue remedy will do little for this dog and i wouldnt start anything at all that works to reduce stress until she's been properly assessed.
  14. I wouldnt be taking internet advice this dog definately needs a professional to assess whats happening. Its been 2 years and chopping and changing methods, trying this, trying that will either keep the dog at the same level, desensitise it to potential progress or make it worst. For this degree of behavior as well you should not go self prescribing herbal remedies. She may and probably would benefit from proper pharmeceuticals if you can keep up with the training that goes with it. I dont like medicating dogs but a problem that makes little progress in 2 years needs something more. Dont bother with a vet, use it in conjunction with a behaviorist or find a good veterinary behaviorist. Not saying to kick them out but ignore the dog. Why do you have to make progress as in have the dog make physical contact with you at all? Maybe you are causing more stress by trying? As for you being 100% against medicating dont let your personal thoughts stand in the way of potential progress for this dog. The long road is not always the kindest for the dog especially if its a fear based problem. Once again, a professional needs to be called in or just accept all the dogs quirks and let her live in a semi-wild state in the house/backyard.
  15. Then I wouldnt be walking the dog. If you are not doing anything to decrease her anxiety or show her the right way to cope with stimuli while out on a walk then you are 1) not building a well foundationed trusting relationship between you and the dog and 2) cementing her behavior. Socialisation can be quality over quantity. Better to work on her at home then take her out and stress her more. After two years of this behavior I would be getting a professional behaviorist to come in and see whats going on. She may even require medication whilst she is being trained in order to get her over any peaks she has difficulty crossing. No she may never be the picture perfect dog, hey actually very few dogs are. But living in anxiety and fearful reactions is not very nice and two years with slow improvement for me would warrant professional help.
  16. That is a pet hate of mine. This is OK for dogs with few problems and general drills but not for dogs that need a little more help. Hope this new club works out for you!
  17. Royal Canin make a Giant Breed kibble adult formula. Its about the quarter of the size of my palm and even my most notorious swallower HAD to chew it! Goes a long way as well and even my Dogue could chew them happily. ETA soaked food lets them hoover it. WHat does he get for his teeth? He needs to chew in order to maintain his oral health. I find for that face shape chicken carcasses are the best as every tooth gets a good work out.
  18. Excitement like this is still a training issue. If she was buzzing around the house 24/7 then I would say its a food issue. If the dog has been to training since 9 weeks and this issue is still unresolved find a different trainer it really shouldnt take 6 months to get under control effectively. Yes protein level can affect behavior and I have seen dogs on different foods have a personality turn around. Artificial additives and filler products seem to be a bigger contributor to weird behaviors then protein. I myself have increased the protein in my dogs diets and NOT seen any noticable difference but then again everyone has only one option in this house - behave
  19. After two years maybe you have to see if she is acting some things and genuinely showing fear at other times. Seems like the dog is having 100% of the say of how, when, where etc and only getting "come on, please" acting from people. I would turn the tables. Your dad is the only one to feed her and he has the bowl near him while he's watching telly etc. When she's hungry enough she'll go there. I would have him ignore her more and not acknowledge her at all and watch her change. First she will pull out the shying behavior because that got her attention. Then she will be confused and wonder why her acts get her nothing. Midol how you do the walks sounds like great progress, although work on getting her to look to you when she feels stressed and not jogging away from her source of anxiety. Lead and teach her that although she might feel stressed out the handler is to be trusted and nothing bad will happen.
  20. There is photos on the links RebeLT it looks nothing like a bull terrier ANd good on the newspaper American Staffordshire Bull Terrier ... WOW A NEW BREED!!!!
  21. Sorry but she'll make it worst sounds like the type of owner who needs a desexed male. Mating INCREASES territorial behavior. Nuff said. Need more info book an appointment.
  22. The best way to train dog is with a sense of humor and relaxed. It works all the time and when you stuff up who cares, dust yourself off and try again works like a charm. That is SOOOOOO me it's not funny
  23. Of course Erny I was lowering my centre of gravity in order to apply an effective correction and bringing myself down to the dogs level in order to project my assertion of control and dominance. Now to cover up the scrape on my poor little elbow Hey I tell people I can make the dogs walk, not guarantee that the trainer will be in any way, shape or form coordinated enough to hold herself upright for the entire session. The poor owner just went 'yeah he does that too me a lot too' Karma bites though ... next monday mr Macho man is off to get his nuts removed see pull me over and Nekkers gets another set of jars on her cabinet
  24. Ridgies get the first lot of runs then its open to all breeds If you have not been before you have to buy a 12 month membership to cover insurance but that is only about $6.50 last time I paid. They usually have a BBQ and drinks available to buy too. these are my two doing it
  25. Well first time for everything ... helping a client today with handling his dog. Not that big a dog. Has a lunging problem. These two terriers appear at their fence and RAAAARARARARARAA at me and dog ... dog lunges I take a step back right onto dry grass and fall A over T with dog still having a bark because my shoes slip. See us trainers ARE human after all Didnt I look like a right doofus at least it was only with like 10 people watching BTW I got the dog walking nicely by the end of the session
