  1. I think there is your problem - before they have had things when THEY wanted. Now its 'COME ON WE WANNA PLAY NOW!!!" give them a few days to settle. Conversely borrow a couple of bark collars to stop their barking and make them focus on the distraction devices you have provided.
  2. they can tend to try and keep up with what is ahead especially at their age When she tries to pull do little sharp tugs on her leash *pop pop pop pop pop* and call her back to you. Have a bit of food as well to reward her when she sticks next to you. The pops will break her focus off the bike and onto you - you are not correcting you are interrupting. If she starts becoming difficult or ignoring you something like a martingale collar or a correction chain for a couple of sessions tied in with the positive reinforcement of the correct behavior can do wonders
  3. what breed what equipment do you use/have used how does the dog pull, does it weave about or just drag you what work have you done so far
  4. I agree with PPS Agility, flyall, obedience etc are NOT work in the traditional sense. They are a controlled SPORT which can give indications of a dogs workability and temperament for proper work eg - Schutzhund to police/security/PPD etc competitive tracking to S&R or hunting the problems is that dog sports are controlled, the parameters are restrained and most are not done in the real world with real word distractions. They are an artificial simulation of a work situation and hence cannot be counted as 'work' situations.
  5. 7kg in 3 weeks isnt too bad, my rotty would put on nearly that in under 2 when he was a pup as long as he's lean and happy the diet sounds fine
  6. unless they are the small ones, no - hard and spikey why buy when you can fish them for free!
  7. no I just mean Parvo is a gastrointestinal disease so what does it have to do with sneezing and coughing? I would have thought vomiting, gas, blood in stool and diahrreah would be symptoms of parvo not sneezing
  8. my lot eat whiting, garfish, pinkies, flathead - all raw no ones choked yet. The whiting and Gar I feed whole (gar just cut the tip off) and the rest I cut out the spines/bones depending on the fish leo lead is not an issue in local caught fish its mainly overseas where they have been dumping industrial waste into their water systems that is
  9. err the staffy part is what worries me. Are the parents actually amstaffs or SBTs or pitbulls? I also found from City of Salisbury so if you dont have proof your dog is what you say it is technically they can fine you?? http://www.wtcc.sa.gov.au/webdata/resource..._dogsbreeds.pdf this one from City of West Torrens will fine you $1000 for the same thing  I think he needs to speak to the EDBA about it because the word 'staffy' will cause him grief
  10. do you mean Parvo of Kennel Cough? Parvo can exist in the environment for quite a while so I wouldnt be inviting the neighbours over either  grass eating is normal, all mine do it as well as eating fruit off the trees and ground. Grass cleans them out it seems and my lot have never been constipated with green grass around.

    Growing Pup

try the Eagle Pack giant puppy its magic for giant puppies since your puppy is a cross you wont really know how big is too big or too fast unfortunately! Keep him trim, limit his bouncing/jumping, keep his muscle tone and he should be fine
  12. hey sara 1) dropped all excess weight off the dog (and I mean really dropped) 2) fish oil capsules, and 1000mg glucosamine/MSM/chondroiten tablets in the food 3) get that dog moving! wading in water (not swimming but wading to half way up the dogs chest) takes the pressure off but encourages movement of all 4 legs 4) we had acupuncture, chiropractic, electrical stimulation therapy by the vet (then we did physio and massage every day at home) 5) kept him on a good quality diet with nothing artificial that would inflame his system Give Dr Kim Lim a call (03)52416213 and she will be able to recommend someone for you
  13. I would get the vet to give the dog a good go over. Ear problems, eye problems, pain etc can all contribute to this behavior so if there is no medical reason for it then maybe there is a new cat/animal in the neighbourhood (or even in your rood/walls?!?) causing her grief. Could she possibly be becoming slightly senile? (no offense meant)
  14. depends on the lines and the parents - there is two distinct types. weight doesnt matter. Dont become one of those people obsessed with weight and size. You have a large/giant breed grow him SLOW and keep him trim best way to avoid growth problems or bone problems later on. Puppies go through growth spurts, gangly periods, plateaus etc so until about 2 1/2 dont expect any final shape or size. Also DONT allow the pup to jump up/down on objects, out of the car or stairs and very long walks/jogs. They can injure themselves quite well and sometimes without obvious outward signs. Those big knuckles need to grow before they can take the strain of that type of pressure. eta he looks in pretty good condition but his front feet look a little flat. What are you currently feeding him? He may need a different balance food. My dogue has similar feet when I first got him at 7 months and a change in diet tightened them up :D see how the front feet are rather pancake? now there is a more bunched shape - I changed his food to a giant breed puppy and added raw meaty bones (which he adores and keeps their teeth lovely and clean which can be hard to achieve because of the shape of mastiff/bulldog jaws  )
  15. people wonder why the breed bans wont be overturned anytime soon ... Jeezus all I see is a sea of APBT owners screaming 'MY dog has a great temperament, pitties are the best breed, they can do anything, stuff the rest of you what would you know' and you wonder why the law doesnt listen to you. The law is the law. It has the unfortunate power to make your life and that of your dog VERY miserably, hell even final. Why not play with intelligence instead of just spouting rubbish like 'what would you know, have you ever owned an APBT' why does one have to own one to support you? You dont want support? You'd rather push things underground and fulfill stereotypes of the APBT and the people that own them? Looks like it sometimes honestly rubbish like this is why many people, me included, stop putting their hands up to help with a lot of things. I am against BSL but when it comes to unity - bah - I dont need a migraine sitting on the same old merry go round. Grow up, use to law to your advantage if you want it overturned not give it the finger.
  16. the only completely non allergenic food in my household is Royal Canin. Even on the Eagle Pack my rottie scratches and nibbles until he's bald. They're on the Coprice at the moment and Diesel is OK with it so far, but that has wheat bran - hasnt shown side effect though
  17. be strong this guilt is what enables the dog to do what he wants and hence now you are stressing with fights. Hey you gave him a chance, he didnt want to comply so tough titties  My dogue didnt want to comply with his commands last night and hence missed out of majority of the chicken wings. He thought, well I earned 2 I'll just be lazy now. Should have seen his face when the others got theirs for being SOOOO obedience and he's still waiting for a freebie dont feel bad he wont starve to death
  18. if he doesnt like eating raw then why dont you give him a bit of high quality dry food, and let him have the chicken carcasses as teeth cleaners? not every dog will accept or do well on a raw diet. My lot will scoff anything but they hold weight better on dry food.
  19. kelly surgery does work for quite a few people - especially the dogs on the small - medium end of the scale. My dog is nearly 50 kilos, skinny as a rake and still growing. Surgery was - errrr well it might work might for me was not enough to subject my dog to the pain of it when natural therapies did the trick It will of course work differently for every dog as every one is unique in every way. But I decided to try and give D quality of life through acupunture, diet, electro therapy and chiropracty before massive surgeries (and there would have to be multiple due to the number of problems) Worked for me but I dont see any reason to flame you at all :p
  20. ;) great to hear its not too serious then, you must have been in an absolute panic!
  21. there is a difference between true compulsive disorders (such as shadow chasing, spinning, imaginary fly catching etc) and just being a really high drive, motivated dog. Dogs with disorders can be difficult to control and will at times not stop their behavior for anything. Find a good sport club and go have fun ;) oh and uh, where are the photos? hmmm???
  22. wow sounds like a great price! You dont want to know what I would be up for with my rottie! Dr Charles Kuntz frequents this forum, he would be a good person to ask. It depends what is actually the problem with the joints as to what will work and what will not. Remember too the recovery time it will take and the physio you need to invest in order to get the dogs muscular structure up to help with movement in the long term. Triple Osteotomy (cutting the pelvis in 3 places) is pretty much ONLY for pups between about 5 - 8/9 months from what I read and allows a more normal development. Really its up to you - I would speak to the surgeon about success rates, previous cases in similar situations to yours and how they have fared (ie has surgery prolonged the life span significantly) then decide which route you take. My dogs HD/ED I manage with natural therapies because I dont want to put him through the pain of multiple surgeries (which we also cannot afford) so we have decided to let him be happy and bouncing along as long as his legs can hold him.
  23. I either grab the muzzle gentle, growl at the pup and then walk off or if the pup is latched on gentle curl the lips into the top teeth and gently squeeze until the pup lets go. Dont feel too bad if the pup throws a tantrum or squeals they are trying to get one up on you (remember be GENTLE!!!) you're the boss and the biting can stop if you show that it is not a pleasant thing for the pup to do. Labs are mouthy - other dogs would not tolerate it so dont allow it at all. Also remember puppies have little self control so DONT let the kids razz it up and encourage hyper behavior which then leads to nipping. As for the furniture buy something like Crib Stop or a bitter apple spray, and you can smear the toys with a little kabana - the smell will attract the dog. Also if you see the pup going for the furniture a simple "GRRR AHHH" and then call it away from the naughty item and offer a treat and toy. Always give the puppy the desired behavior you expect from it.
  24. sorry my smilie dissapeared I meant it more in a mental exercise way. Yes agility and even flyball would be FABULOUS for her! Also look up things like clicker trainging and shaping to teach her tricks. THere are some areas with earthdog clubs too she would excell at that. If she's ball/toy obsessed it would be worth having someone show you some drive training techniques to control her through her prey drive and also teach her when its OK to release her drive - kids being a definate no no. when you were letting her play with the hose was she going at the children or was she more restrained? I let my dogs play with things like the hose but only when I say they can. The hose lives in the backyard and no one tried to kill it when we finish the game Depends on the dog and the technique. she definately sounds like the type of dog that could do anything! I love terriers but I opted for the big version of a high drive dog with a Belgian Malinois so we're both crazy
  25. no dog should put their mouth on you at all. Sorry I dont think that many dogs, especially exhuberant puppies, are capable of the human like self control this is putting on them. I live by the rule that you DONT mouth me at all - and Diesels bum nipping was dealt with by a squeezed muzzle if he got in contact or squirting him with water if he snuck up behind. if you dont want a dog to counter surf do you put their paw up on it and then teach backwards? Teach its OK to put paws up but you cant eat the food? No because we know one invariably leads to the other. we are humans, not dogs, and hence should not be mouthed.
