  1. IR is right go to a specialist before steroid therapy at a normal vet and make sure a proper diagnosis is made not just med pumping. As for the z/d you need something non processed and eliminate everything from the diet. What other foods have been tried, has an elimination diet been done properly or just the z/d? flagyl will only help if there is an anaerobic bacterial infection in there, from the sounds of it you just have a very sensitive dog with many food problems.
  2. yup get her professionally done and then ASK the groomer the best way to keep the hair shedding down. also look into diet, what are you feeding her at the moment? My grandaparents JRT x used to moult all the time it was insane, but taking out a few things lessened it
  3. what kind of growl was it ... some GSDs growl, yodel and talk when their happy or want to communicate either way smack her on the nose for smacking her dog and not knowing why ...
  4. wow will her digestive system be OK with that much oil??? wont she just run through?! if she's thin have you tried nutragel with her or divetelact? as for allergies floor cleaners and what is on your clothing will not help! Yes we discovered that Diesel became itchy with a really fragrant washing powder when I did a load and he sat on one of the items. so start removing all chemicals from the home too *sigh* its not easy is it
  5. she needs a good proper groom, probably a trim and all that dead coat raked out with the proper equiptment. does she shed all the time or just seasonally?
  6. thats a bit harsh ... All that was meant was that people reply on what you write, if you have had dogs for 30 years then why not write so and that you wanted advice on XYZ this forum sees a few people who have little idea and dosing can be dangerous without veterinary supervision. Maybe thats where you should go if this forum doesnt suit your tastes.
  7. i spread the food on the ground (especially kibble) and let them pick it up bit by bit. Or throw it on some grass he will have to work for it. move all other dogs away completely for this and leave him be. Slowly come closer and hang around he will start to learn patience.
  8. you can use human conjunctivities ointment if it starts looking irritated its called Brolene Eye Ointment. Chemists have it. Just NEVER touch the eye with the nozzle or you risk recontaminating the eye and creating further infection. Sqeeze the gel onto the eyeball and just rotate the tube to snap it off.
  9. i just use a dremel now as I find there are no clippers on the market nice enough to cut a DDB nails well and my malinois bleeds like a stuck pig!
  10. not all dogs will tolerate all other dogs, and some none at all. Just like you will not immediately love every new person you meet  its better to find others who have compatible dogs and have play dates like that. I have not used dog parks in a long time and never will.
  11. missed the 14 weeks bit ... well its a pair of ear plugs and tough love for now
  12. you sure its going off properly? The thing I have found with Innotek is you have to watch for the red light to flash and the collar to be very tight and not around from the voice box. My Malinois was an extreme barker but the innotek one fixed her after a few highest level zappies in the right pos. Rottie used to give his head a good shake and shook it to the side and no effect at all.
  13. Huski if you have a look at leerburg.com there is a vid of him showing how flimsy some prongs can be. He corrects the dog and instead of a correction it opens and flies off the dog at him! You know .. you use what is right for the dog ... I havnt read this thread but for most GSDs a dominant dog collar is a GREAT correcting tool I wish we had more in Aus.
  14. whack it up on the highest level it has, that worked for my Malinois. conversely a friend of mine did this with a nuscience Malinois she had at her kennels. She has an ultrasonic bark stopper (makes a noise when a dog barks) and she put a nice strong E collar on the Mal. Every time the light went off she gave him a BIG correction. 2 days later silent dog. Not fearful or traumatised at all (she would never hurt a dog) but that dog was a barker and a half.
  15. e-collar ... or are you not using many corrections? saying that my rottie NEVER shuts up ... he's on borrowed time before I blow my stack with him he whinges or barks all the time.
  16. OT PF whats with the witchey poo dont make me drop a house on you
  17. wow all that lovely salt, flavour and colour over a real treat. of course dogs go bonkers over it. Kids go mad Maccas over home cooked food wasted money on junk. feed your dog raw foods instead of junk. And wheat starch is not good for a dog, especially those for sensitive skin breeds.
  18. most dogs can be taught from puppies to walk nicely on a flat collar and no pup under 6 months should wear a check or prong (OK there is the odd exception but in professional hands) prongs are not illegal in australia at all in fact they are an incredible tool and the idiot government banned them in Vic and all the hippies think they torture dogs Corrective aids are for individuals who have a temperament not conducive to just a simple flat collar. If you start early and you push the right buttons there is no need for corrective aids. Saying that there is nothing wrong that if your dog is high drive etc you use it to make training easier. But at 16 weeks a flat collar is enough.
  19. he's constipated for some reason chuck the ecopet it doesnt look like its doing him any good. It stinks which attracts them but obviously it doesnt agree with him.
  20. why are you recommending a prong?! Christ this dog in no way needs one! this is a 16 week old puppy - it needs a flat collar and training.
  21. you should be in charge anyway and prevent rough play with random dogs. Dogs need to work each other out and thats why I too hate dog parks. You dont know the dogs, their quirks etc and it can erupt into a fight a truely aggressive dog is one that ignores signals from other dogs or shows an aggressive reaction without true provocation from the other dog. It wont turn into DA naturally
  22. why dont you just use a collar? You cannot control a dog through a harness. If she refuses to walk with a collar give her little tugs and just keep her moving with a treat in hand and she'll get it she's a beagle ... she's being stubborn so dont let her get her used to the harness if you want it for car travel etc when you get her pick her up, go get the harness and put in on her and leave her to get used to it around the house.
  23. he sounds like he's finally coming of age. Sounds like he's holding his own as well, any dog that 'rushes' another is very rude in dog language and he's telling them off. its a similar situation when you have a group of people, some people are quiet and reserved, others dominate the situation etc its a pack heirachy that is just an innate part of all group animals.
  24. tug of war has nothing to do with it at all its not a mechanical injury its a difference if growth rate between the bottom and top jaws. the only reason I dont play tug with young pups is that it can rock or pull out a baby tooth, and their gums can be tender anyway. play until he's uncomfortable then wait for his adult teeth to come through and you can play again.
  25. If a dog is choking you lift them, tip them foreward (for the bigger ones I left the hind legs to point their face at the floor) and give the chest a few slaps to make them cough. If its really stuck off to the vet but open the mouth, pull the tongue out to open the throat and have a look first. Dogs dont just keel over and die in a second from eating raw bones if they start huck huck noises give them something bigger. Your dogs teeth are bleeding because they are puppy teeth. It will happen to all pups and is nothing to worry about at all, in fact he needs more bones to help his teeth come out properly. I saw all too many puppies with retained baby teeth at desexing time and it was my job to pull them out. None of these owners gave their dogs raw meaty bones.
