  1. IMO never ... I dont like them or the idea of them and i dont take my dogs to them at all. dogs dont have to meet every strange dog in the world in order to be happy. More harm comes from dog parks then good.
  2. I also work up there, I set aside up to half a day for distances like that contact is in my sig
  3. socialisation is better done with dogs you KNOW then random dogs in a dog park. find friends with dogs and go there in the critical period not dogs that potentially have behavioral problems or lack of social skills and pass these onto your pup in a traumatic experience. rolling over is a normal puppy thing to do but I would NEVER let a strange dog growl at mine.
  4. ahhaaaa who's the boss in the family Methinks you need to stop thinking in 'dog likes this, dog doesnt like that' and simply 'you do what I say, how I say, when I say and if you dont like it tough titties' She sounds like she's simply dominating the situation and not letting people or you leave - everything on her terms. What is commonly seen as separation anxiety is sometimes a dog telling the owner off for leaving then causing mayhem in the mean time because the owners didnt listen to them. They can be sneaky!
  5. Acepromazine pretty much sedates them so they're quiet, and sleepy. Its something to discuss with your veterinarian and not something uptaken lightly BUT if the dog is really stressed on occasional car trips it may be an option. still needs desensitisation have you ever called someone out for it?
  6. congratulations!!!! Great to hear your problem is solved you're a brave lady for taking on 2 puppies at the same time but the fact you solved it yourself ... hubby needs to take you out to dinner for this you know ... tell him I said so O_o
  7. have you tried a desensitisation scheme? medication and herbs alone do not solve the problem but allow for easier training when the edge is taken off the anxiety. sounds like ACE from the vet is the only thing if the dog is so stressed its pooping
  8. hasnt seen that reaction? wow ... its pretty common! I think you need some more help with the 'door' issue, sounds like she just needs to be settled before any training will start in her brain. Its very hard to get through to a hyperactive dog! give them a call back for another session and get them to settle her FOR YOU at the door. See what they do (if they can) In the mean time before someone leaves put her away and ignore her stressful behavior, even better if she cannot see the door. She will just get progressively worst if allowed to repeat.
  9. I put a similar disclaimer on my emails when giving out info to a client - this information is for the dog analysed please do not pass this on to other people. similar behaviors can be form different causes. One person goes 'oh my dog does that!' tries it and regresses the dog or doesnt fully understand what they are doing and make it worst. It's not training a trick it's dealing with a potentially dangerous situation with a stressed dog. Isn't that more responsible then 'hey go home and give it a go yourself!'.
  10. the dog needs to be on a leash and crate trained. She's too 'involved' and the pattern of coming/going is causing her anxiety. Dont let the dog off leash around people you have to show her how to behave around them and what is expected. If she cannot behave lock her out of the area where the visitors are until she settles then bring her in on leash again. I agree with what your behaviorist said about her behavior but I think the method just didnt work and you need to try something else. feeding her after everyone doesnt work IF she doesnt understand her place in the household. Lack of leadership can be a stress factor to a dog hence causing manic behaviors in the animal. Feed her but make her WORK for it. DO a trick, wait properly and release for the food. make her work for everything she wants, dont free praise and dont let the dog train you. Commonly a dog will come and perform (eg sit) for the owner and owner immediately praises or treats - who trained who here? Dog trained owner to hand out the love on the DOGS command! Tricky aren't they!
  11. thats only your opinion as well steve. I didnt say I didnt agree with your method either, nor did I comment on physical force. I was commenting on the fact that some 'without force' methods are not truly that when really thought about. The word force is not always necessarily something that is physically applied but oh well, and if you think about you're applying pressure force to comply through hunger, tethering (no escape) etc. I'm leaving before you just sit here bored and pick on everything again simply because you want to be right in your own mind. that was an owner perception I was commenting about. Some owners think they're mean if their dog doesnt have the fluffiest bed, the most expensive collar or the finest human steak cooked, warm and pre-chopped for their dog right on time. Shell its so great to see. I too do not believe that most dogs are a PTS case just because of aggressive responses. I love getting photos like yours from my clients. I am proud of them both as they work as a team and I love seeing the new 'you' from them too when their confidence returns with their dogs
  12. I said nothing about being mean did I? I just meant that you cannot say the dog is not 'forced' (not in the physical sense) with TOT. No distraction, no other mean of food, tied out without means of escape - hence dog is 'forced' into complying with the situation if you get my meaning. I'm not picking I'm simply saying that to say there is no 'force' is not correct. There is a degree of force whenever you restrict a dog from doing whatever it wants, hey dog training wouldnt work without it! Without leads, fences, collars, food/attention/stimulus deprivation we wouldnt get very far at all!
  13. I see Cesars dominant state of mind as close to how I see it - a dog that makes its own decisions about how to react to a situation without looking for behavioral cues from the owner. I dont stick to the theory that a dog must posture, hump you etc but even fearful dogs will control situation through behavior learned through experience. Fearful dogs can react aggressively, or they can show avoidance behavior. Depends what you mean by use of force - I think most will see the word 'force' and have a mental image of a pinned down dog or one dragged about. Nothing wrong with flooding in the right hands. But in essence force can be as simple as making the dog be there when it doesnt want to be - shutting the door to the room, not feeding the dog that day so its forced to eat from your hand etc. Steve TOT dogs are on a tie out, why is that not considered use of force? The dog is forced to stay in the one spot, allowed to bounce about tied by its collar. Its forcing the dog into the situation wether it likes it or not ... but you sometimes HAVE to. We're all to frightened these days of making our dogs do anything or we feel like we're being mean but how will they learn? Corvus you miss the point about corrections. Whoever you are, if your dogs are fearful of you your training regime is WRONG. Doesnt matter the dog or situation. Fear is NOT the point of corrections. They are a response from either the owner or the equipment in proportion to the behavior of the dog. If your dog rolls over and pees itself or hits the deck flinching then that crosses into abuse NOT correction. Nothing wrong with physical corrections IF warranted by the dog and its behavior.
  14. he doesnt need a rottie breed specialist he needs someone who understands protection training inside out. by 12 months he would have been doing a lot of prey work, so the dog could either be properly protecting but now knowing how to follow through or gets excited, sees people as fun and remembers the most fun comes from playing tug-o-war with their arm! if they cant get a hold of anyone tell them to email me, its in the sig
  15. love the cesar milan bashing links christ. sometimes in order to get through to a dog you have to be physical. Not abusive - but use some physical touch or counter weight. You sometimes have to make a dog do what it doesnt want to do as well. I think the terminology is a bit skewed but it has some valid points in there if you read it carefully.
  16. if he gains weight you are feeding him too much. The packets tend to be WAY over the top! According to the bag I should be feeding my dogs 15kgs a week, and they eat half that. 2 meals a day is better as well as they do not beg or get too hungry between meals. His later meal can be something like edible meaty bones (lamb flaps, necks etc), a chicken carcass etc have you tried Ziwipeak or Royal Canin? Also if he's sensitive look at changing his diet over a couple of weeks. Start with a 25% new and 75% old mix and gradually phase out the old food over the 2 weeks. This limits upset tummies. Remember too you can give him a little natural no sugar yoghurt to help with an upset tummy or Inner Health Plus capsules
  17. Buster a 12 week old i not capable of true aggression. If he is at a scary level (I have seen one but that animal was just beyond) get a one on one trainer to help you before you go to group classes it is worth the expense thats not telling off to a dog - your tone dictates to the dog your mood. YOu could be reading off a shopping list as far as he's concerned how much encouragement do you do for Buster to do the correct behavior for you. FOr every corrective thing you do, you should be giving him 3-4 praises/rewards (be they verbal, treat, toy, play etc whatever works for your dog) in order for him to learn.

x-ray and if nothing shows up then go to a chiro. Vets and their medications honestly ...
  19. choking isnt a correction per say its a control method when the sh*ts about to hit the fan. I have seen it used on a dog and I dont have a problem with it if its the only control method left available. You dont hang them until they're blue, you increase the pressure to redirect the brain - calm down and release pressure or carry on like a pork chop and be uncomfortable. Varying pressure around the throat is a good method and works better then having to rip a dog off its feet. Large and giant breeds are easier to control as well. if giant leash corrections dont work you're correcting incorrectly or too late.
  20. OMG ... what the ... now I really HAVE read anything .... there are many different methods and which one depends on the individual dog. check chains are not for applying constant pressure to the throat, DD collars are. Check chains were made for short sharp corrections, DD collars were for varying pressure and suppression work. when do you think any correction should be applied, when your dogs already flipping out or before he gets to that uncontrollable stage.
  21. dogs cannot think in degrees. Its black or white and this is where you get those people that say 'oh he never did that before' when the dog got over excited and chomped. It is unfair as many people cannot get this right, become frustrated or do it to varying degress and by 6 months mouthy excitable pup is in the pound. dogs do NOT spend their whole lives mouthing each other either. Puppies learn quickly not to nip other dogs. Dogs do not 'grow out of' behaviors unless they are so soft that just ignoring it will extinguish it, and that is a rare puppy. when I play sometimes the dogs will open their mouthes at my hand etc but NEVER put my hand in their mouth or even gently mouthe. Its not acceptable you are not a toy to the dog and there are plenty of other ways to play.
  22. he ate 2 meals of it, the second he got into the bag and had a massive meal of it *bastard animal* that was a couple of weeks ago, he's settled but STILL itching, his ears are red and a little crusty and needs regular washing or he stinks. He's ruined from it. Paw Paw cream settles him. his only good diet is RC and he's fine on that, just the Eagle Pack sets him off.
  23. an allergy is actually an immune response to a normal part of the dogs environment. The body creates an immune attack on the offending compound instead of behaving normally. look at the incidents of children with asthma and peanut/nut/food allergies. all immune hyperresponses.

what food are you feeding him - you say meat what kind? Also what kibble? Pano is one thing to think about = growing pains as such. If his diet is not right for his size and breed it can cause Pano, as can being too chubby. You want thin thin thin but reasonably muscled! A chubby bulldog is an unhealthy bulldog and watch some people as they say they should be a bit 'bigger'.

    Double Trouble

desex them ASAP before you end up with puppies ... yes they will do it. And yes I have heard from people 'oh but they're brother and sister they know that and they wont!' then a litter pops out a few weeks later! Before 6 months both of them! pups play, its part of growing up. Growling is not all bad its a vocalisation dogs have as part of play. The nips are them telling each other OI THAT HURT! which a pup SHOULD be learning!
