  3. that's what DOL is about isnt it ... not only do are we strewn with dead horses but we have baaaaaaaad RSI from the floggings we give them ;) come on whats life without a good jab here and there alpha bet didnt think that name would be popping up round these here parts ...
  4. i find all harnesses useless unless the attitude comes with them by then a collar works better there is no such dog that has a pull on the lead only problem. There is probably other things that structure during a walk can help as well which I believe in as a part of the overall lifestyle. They still cause discomfort to the dog but for prolonged periods and for most you will be giving a more prolonged sensation then if you just gave the dog a correction fitting for the dog in the first place. sam n saki if she pulls I'll fix it in under an hour for you honestly people make it out to be this mystical magical quest ... walking on a leash is easy peasy!
  5. hence the need for the stim therapy. The muscles would be so atrophied the dog would not be able to walk. all this has achieved is growing a nice thick scar tissue layer. Like I said I dread the day that scar tissue snaps with the dog jumping those heights. Its OK since a dog LANDS on its front legs but if it has to place all pressure on the hinds wait for the scream. Seen it. Not pretty.
  6. sag I have seen the boxer is an S shape to promote chewing but the maxi/giant is just square kibble increased in size. The giant adult is almost the size of my palm and is great for food bolters like my Malinois as they have to chew to be able to swallow it as for bloat, so many factors go into this. RC doesnt swell excessively like some foods do (I have done a soak test with the food) so that may be as far as that theory goes.
  7. I have a damaged cruciate ligament in my knee can I tell you how damn painfull it is. Especially the more you sit down and do nothing. It's like someone took a sledgehammer to your knee and THEN my foot rotates inwards. 6 months rest is not required for cruciate repairs. That is excessive. And I have helped veterinarians in cruciate repairs. Arthritis also has nothing to do with the ligaments it is a cartilage/bone shape problem. elec stim therapy is one way to build muscle but your dog should not be jumping 2m fences at all. Wait until one day it falls on its hinds and the tear reopens. Scar tissue will not regrow the same as a repaired cruciate I hope your sister told you that as well. Worst still the damage could have caused some nerve damage hence the jumping. ETA can I just say I'm not one to jump into surgery and I have a dog that was quoted over $20,000 worth for his legs and alternative therapies worked. Bodgy breeding and bone structure is one thing, ligaments are another.
  8. I think you have a now temper tantrum dog who has never been told off properly hence her reaction to you. She is not a baby anymore and hence will behave more like a spoiled 6 year old. Mouthing, nipping, destruction, barking etc are not things puppies simply grow out of. She may have stopped as her excitement levels diminished at the behavior but now the pug is here she's hyper and back into it. I say call a different trainer to give you better advice. She not only needs to be shown what is right/wrong but what the alternative to the behavior is.
  9. why dont you try the eagle pack giant breed puppy its about the same protein as bonny adult but at least tailored for a growing puppy. I too dont know why the breeder would put you right from high quality to low.
  10. wasnt a bandog x was it? in sydney? what a genius telling all he has a pittie x

    Scared Puppy

could they maybe have yelled at him if he snuck into the house, and now in a possible fear period he's expecting the same thing?
  12. it's always allergies here hehehehehe I have a packet of Phenergen lying about when the rottie gets really bad, knocks him out and at least he can have an itch free sleep.

    Scared Puppy

there is fear periods and then there is just weak nerves/genetics. It can be a combination of genetic factors as well as environmental but to piss itself shows the dog is well and truly scared of you. I would really get someone in to look at the dog and whats happening in the house before this behavior 'sticks' long term, and shepherds are great at behaving like that. My old boy was the same but I pulled him out of it as most of it was simply his 'if I do this you wont raise your voice at all' behavior instead of real fear. But your dog could be the same, or different hehe. Dont give him an escape route, I would have him on leash inside in short bursts, make it fun and happy, then put him outside. Sounds like inside the house is a problem with him. Make everything positive, I KNOW how frustrating it is but for the long term goals its not good to continue being upset at him, he doesnt understand. If you're not in the mood, better he be happy outside then have another negative inside experience.
  14. do you not crate him and cover with a blanket? that can be at least a start to this. does he exhibit this type of behavior for anything else?
  15. i would go better then supercoat for a shepherd. If you are on a budget many people have had success with uncle albers/great barko
  16. It definately can ... it is something though that requires drive suppression work and an e collar can be handy though the smart thing to do would be to get the dog ignoring the e-collar first - otherwise as soon as its off the drive returns ;)
  17. a warning they also act as a diuretic ... dont be suprised if your dog becomes thirsty and then proceeds to pee like there is no tomorrow OH accidentally took one and was bolting too the loo all day ;) I didnt find they helped my arthritis but simply my water retention
  18. most vets only know what they read on the back of a dog food packet There is nothing wrong with an adult large breed food (I would go something better then Iams) or even a giant breed puppy food like Eagle Pack or Royal Canin if you want a true puppy food as he is well oversized for a GSD of his age. The ratios of minerals etc are the same the simple fact is the protein and fat decrease as the adult dog does no longer need those higher 'growing' levels. Saying that larger/giant breeds need a more adult level of these as their growth is not fast like smaller breeds but prolonged and sustained over a long period.
  19. I used it and coat condition went down as well as allergies popped up. I think it was just too dry for two of mine. As a basis yup its fine but I would be adding at least raw meaty bones or carcasses every day
  20. Stella if you mean Blackburn victoria I do travel, my contact details and site are in my signature.
  21. they are not australian made, Royal Canin is French and Eagle Pack is American. Neither use imported/chinese fillers and they are not irradiated. I haev used both foods and find them better and more digestable then Advance. Artemis is made in Australia but can be very rich for some dogs.
  22. take the dog off the advance. Try something different like Eagle pack, royal canin etc which is more digestable. High filler foods or low digestable protein can make more poos!
  23. have you tried soaking the food? in warm water it makes it quite smelly and delicious conversely some home made stock on top warmed as well can help just keep the salt out of it
  24. you need to step in at home. This is not unnatural behavior and not breed specific. You need to let him know he cannot have everything he wants. Supervise toy time and if he takes it off her, take it off him, give it back and put him somewhere else. Make sure he has his own toy but do not let him just take whatever he wants. at the park keep him on lead and if he goes for a toy correct him. I would be working on making 'toy time' commanded - get the toy! and then 'leave it' so if he has it and you command him he has to drop it. Working through prey can be good for this, maybe getting a trainer in to help you is the way to go you just dont want him to meet a dog very similar to himself at the dog park or they could get into a fight
  25. do not let other dogs chase yours. She is obviously intolerant of rude dog behavior and break it up before it turns into a dog fight if the other dog doesnt back down. as for her behavior it's low light and she probably cannot see them properly and hence goes on the defensive. I would keep her on a leash and not correct the behavior but 'its OK thanks for letting me know' with her. If she startles someone they have every right to report her behavior to the council. As for a wagging tail ... that is not always an I am happy signal. It can also mean confrontation, confusion etc. If she is starting to NOT listen in these situations then keep her on lead
