  1. yes they are run in a controlled environment with professionals so I would definately give it a go!
  2. rustyred if you are close to kelpie-i's training school I suggest you pay them a visit they have experience and will find an outlet for your dog
  3. sorry rusty I didnt mean you I meant it towards herding guys post that prey drive in a herding breed is an unwanted trait! That is what makes them so great at performing! If you go weekly then speak to your trainers about using your dogs prey drive in training to satisfy the urges. Does your dog like toys? If so then instead of food/praise you use a tug toy email me if you need instructions or a convo about it
  4. how is it an undesired trait in a herding breed?!?! If you dont want a herding dog dont get a herding breed! Christ. The dog simply needs to learn WHEN and WHERE to express the working tendencies. If it is a working line BC then it will need regular activities, but from the sounds of it the dog needs a job. Have you done obedience, agility, flyball or herding with the dog? It is not difficult to stop the behavior BUT you need to channel it. You cannot expect a dog hard wired to work to just sit and exist in the backyard and go for a walk a day.

    Help

your dog needs a routine and also to learn about the world as he is probably unsocialised. He is also soundign very very stressed, remember this dog has been uprooted, put into a whole new world he doesnt understand. Where did he sleep before? would it maybe be worth trying a crate and covering it so he feels secure, even a small pet carrier? contact Mark Singer to at least have one consultation to work out what is going on and implement a plan especially as you have children in the house. http://www.caninetraining.com.au/
  7. if you have a look at the back of the optimum packet it is already full of wheat, sorghum, rice, corn and cereal proteins so a little all bran will not hurt. I would not be feeding mince, give your dog meat with bone. 100gm of meat only mince every day is not balanced by the calcium in the food. instead of all bran why dont you try just a tiny pinch of wheat bran (it's in the supermarket usually in the health food/cereal isle) fiber and bran increases the water into the gut hence the bigger poo, she needs much less then that especially if she is not used to it.
  8. putting hand up here - yup a few. OMP
  9. there is another x-ray technique called PennHip invented by the university of pennsylvania in USA. My old boss was a Pennhip expert and used it in younger dog diagnosis of hip problems that may arise. I only paid $300 for sedation and x-rays but they were done for a different vet and my boss and another 2 vets I worked with diagnosed for me.
  10. I wouldnt get him any fatter then that. Diesels operations are for 2 elbows, 2 hips and reconstruct one leg that has bent over a few surgeries but I cannot do that to him. The poor bugger would spend months and months confined and in pain I think my dog has suffered enough in his short life. definately swim him, diesel has the same problem of a bigger front end. Muscles help keep the dog up so swim swim swim! great low impact exercise! Diesel had a stiff walk but the acupuncture and massage we did at home helped loosen the muscles and allow the swelling around his joints to subside. Yup Diesel still has his snap, crackle and pop but it doesnt bother him too much. I like the fact he has a little pain sometimes as it makes him STOP and REST when his body is telling him too. Diesel had parvo as a 5 month old pup so he has remained more gangly then your boy. He also suffers food allergies and stomach upsets so he is hard to get a nice coat and glean on him! So he eats Royal Canin adult Maxi and gets fish oil capsules, glucosamine/chondroiten/MSM human supplements and a herbal immune booster tablet. Did him wonders! you can see his legs in this photo and his size from July this year. He's thin but feeling better for it. He's more lean muscle now then he was before. remember yours too is a puppy so there is only so much muscle he will gain, he's technically a baby heheh. HD and ED needs good x-rays and a vet that can define it properly for you. ALthough when Diesel was x-rayed the poor vet was in tears and simply told me he was not going to make it, the problems were that glaringly obvious. It NEEDS x-rays and properly positioned ones.
  11. I have the leather double ended police leads from www.fordogtrainers.com they have been in salt water, dog drool, and had a 60kg dog smack the end time and time again at full run. 4 years old and still going strong not even a tear in the stitching.
  12. what kind of pain medication is he on? I found my rottweiler ended up completely unable to walk on rimadyl/norocarp and they nearly signed his death warrant. He has shocking HD hips, barely any hip socket, 2 ED elbows, collapsed hock on one rear leg - it will be his second birthday in a week and he goes for a run around every morning. Franky they do little favours long term for the dog. I went to see an excellent holistic vet who managed to get him off the pain killers in a month, going from a drugged up dog who we had to lift twice a day to toilet to walking on his own and regaining all that lost muscle mass from lying about. Through acupuncture, electro-stim therapy, chiro, massage and supplements he has outlived everyones expectations. That and his surgery quote of over $20,000 is way out of our league. I was also told that being almost 50kg they could not guarentee me long term success due to his size and the fact he is still growing. We also found that pain came when he had growth spurts and he recently just had ANOTHER puppy like growth spurt! He grew again up and gangly instead of starting to bulk out a little *sigh* at 50kg at 1 year old he is hideously oversized. Strip every ounce of fat off that dog (not emaciated heheh) but get him thin and make sure he is on a good adult food. My rottie too is oversized he's almost the size of a small great dane! I find weight to be a factor in them moving about, your boy will find trying to move 50kg of dog up and down on bad hips is impossible. Drag him to the beach/river/dog pool and wade him in water just above his elbows to support his weight but not swimming. this was taken about 6-7 months ago, you can see his bent back leg and how spread his elbows are ... yet he's still a happy bugger who goes on the occasional 2 hour walk around the cbd no worries.
  13. royal canin is the only one I give to all my dogs and the only one I have not had problems on - rottweiler, dogues, malinois, german shepherd etc everyone looks great and keeps the weight on.
  14. luvsdogs rope chokers or dominant dog collars as they are sometimes known work differently to matingales
  15. dogs rely on their noses first and then their sight (unless our habituation makes them lazy) hence why the reaction. If they went, like we do, on sight first she would have seen no one was there and not reacted. if you get clothing like that again show it to her, especially if it is in the kids rooms, and let her discover that smell is now part of the environment, not just a 'visitor in the house' smell.
  16. a shirt is a personal item, if it has been worn before it carries more intimate scents of the wearer. The dog could have been confused that maybe there was another 'person' in the room and panicked. Remember your son was asleep and in her eyes vulnerable.
  17. have you seen Resveratrol tablets? They are an antioxidant tablet you can get them from Chemist Warehouse.
  18. who says that is what I do? I have many techniques using collars and only a few require corrections. A collar is a valuable tool with various different pressure points, placement and use. Maybe the art of using collars is just slipping away.
  19. cod liver or even paraffin to help him poo as it will dehydrate the insides what sized dog? kelpie sized a tablespoon or two and give it some time then try again in 6 hours. Dont give huge amounts of water or the food continues to swell adn cause discomfort. he should be fine. My walking black and tan tube did it a couple of weeks ago, no food for 2 days and he was back to his normal self
  20. It all depends. I dont believe in surgery for the sake of it if the dog is not in any discomfort and has quality of life. Yes they may look different but if it doesnt bother them then, eh. I think your vet is right to keep an eye on him and how he is growing, just make sure teeth dont start poking into the gum but then offending teeth can be removed instead of his whole jaw redone (which anyway would be done when his growth phase is finished to prevent the need for further surgeries)
  21. I dont live around there so I cannot really recommend on that front in the mean time remember that in the next 4 weeks to socialise him as much as possible. If he is small enough, carry him in a bag or in your arms so he learns sights and smells of the world (not with and near random dogs or high doggy # areas) take him for car rides often, especially around traffic, trucks etc turn up the television so he learns about loud noises take him to friends who have well friendly, vaccinated/dont go regularly to dog club dogs offer him different things from around the house to investigate and learn about. you live in an apartment don't you? owning a corgi I would be investing in a treadmill and teaching him about that in a few months time as well. They are herding dogs and need to keep their minds active so leaving him at home alone having a TV/radio on would be a good idea too.
  22. is it causing him difficulties? If not personally I wouldnt bother and just clean his teeth for him to ensure the ones that cannot be used too much in chewing dont get too covered in tartar
  23. that's what we get paid to fix, no honestly I have not seen a dog that just pulls and then otherwise is a perfectly quiet, non pushy, snap to attention obedient dog. What I meant was that all the equipment in the world cannot help if the owner is not ready to learn or change, sometimes it just makes the whole experience less painful for all. Plus if the dog has a lunging problem as well it's a heck of a lot easier to stop a lunger with a DD collar then a harness.
  24. his kennel name was von Kaiserhoff, and also worked in conjunction with von Forrell kennels in Melbourne do you mean the today tonight segment PM?
