  1. trim the tips of his claws and when you get a scratch wash it with antiseptic straight away and use something like paw paw ointment on your skin. rather strange to get an allergy, probably more a mild infection
  2. I dont like chain leads only because on some pups it's a little rough and can impede training. The leash is more then a tether it is your training tool. I have also seen a small breed smacked in the head with a leash accidentally, put training a couple steps backwards that day.
  3. it's just habit, she's excited and probably learned it now. I think she's just super happy, you guys get a bit riled up and she escalates. put her on a leash and control her, give her a chewy treat or something and teach her that ALL inside is quiet time. Or pop a crate upstairs to teach her good habits.
  4. i'm not sure what the brand was I know I used to use a set of professional imported ones that a groomer lent me, and then there were the osters I used on cats and rabbits. I used the cooling spray when they got a warm and they lasted me up to half an hour without needing changing. that wasnt gung ho matted hair trimming though, it was pretty light work compared to some things I have done and I used the speed that suited the job. maybe because we used to sharpen the blades often? If I noticed blades were not sharp I used a fresh set. Never burnt an animal I did have one massive massive job of a horribly matted alaskan malamute, that took HOURS! and came off as one huge matt. I went through 3 blades that day and quite a few breaks!
  5. what is he eating? is he eating more dry food or something rich/salty?
  6. I used to use a clipper cooling spray when I clipped, spray, run a little if they were getting too dry and they didnt leave a residue on the coat either. They did get to the point where you had to change the blade when it overheated and I checked every couple of minutes on my wrist to make sure I never burned the animal (I did cats and rabbits as well) but the clippers themselves didnt need to stop under half an hour if the blades were sharp and they were not strained. I would try some spray and a spare blade, make sure you oil them properly before storage, and make sure they are sharp enough. Sounds like a lack of lube but I'm just suggesting :D
  7. they should not be heating to the point of discomfort after that long, are they warm or really really hot? Did you lubricate properly before using them? ETA did you brush the dog first and are you going against or with the hair?
  8. how often does it heat up? if they are sharp and enough power they should not be heating up that fast make sure they are oiled as well
  9. of course in the space of a year your parents could have allowed her to get her way - coming inside if she acts frightened enough. I would call her bluff, put her into a routine and try and ride it out. If she is following commands then she is not traumatised enough to actually have had a scare, sounds like its a coping mechanism while you were away.
  10. a lot of forward planning and rotating toys. they are very full on so every spare minute is devoted to some sort of work with them which is why I have the wonderful 5 1/2 year old bitch I have today. So when people complain about the normal pet pups I find it rather unfounded. Dont want things chewed - move them. Sick of them under your feet - crate them. At least yours tire out mine would GO GO GO for almost every moment I was home and giving her a sleep routine from the moment she came home was a godsend!
  11. you think you have it tough try raising a working malinois. Oh I was lucky and didnt have the whining, the chewing, the crying, the mouthing she was never allowed. I did have day in day out of routine, drive building, socialisation, bitework, praise, training etc you have it lucky with just a pet so appreciate it and simply put your foot down to unwanted behaviors. If I can with mega chewing, high drive pups whilst holding down a full time job as well you guys have the easy road
  12. I think people need to understand the difference between human aggression and a genuine ability to protect and hunt. any working dog should conform to the filas behaviors. The working rottweiler, the working shepherd, the working dobe they should be brave, loyal and stable temperament but no. We're so scared of a real dog we water them down to pretty garden ornaments that flinch at the sound of their own farts. You know what? Not everyone should own a dog, and even less have need or should own a guarding breed. This prediliction that we HAVE to own the dog of our dreams is ridiculous. I want a koenigsegg but all I can do is bolt a badged body kit onto my commodore and make prrrrrrtttttt VROOOM noises as I drive. It's sad really.
  13. if they dont drop soon have them removed, I know retained testicles can cause problems for dogs.
  14. That is what it's meant to be - a daily thing for the life of the dog to prevent plaque build up.
  15. I use the human supplements as they are cheaper then the animal. Glucosamine/chondroiten/MSM comes in powder form as well so you can add it to their food. I use fish oil capsules as well but you can buy cheap tinned fish at Aldi to add to their normal diet
  16. additive to the drinking water to prevent plaque build up
  17. you need 10 mls of aquadent to every litre of water ... considering I use a 60L bucket for my lot it would cost me a fortune It also contains FD&C blue no 1 and yellow no 5 as colouring agents http://www.virbacvet.com/images/resources/...t%2020MAR09.pdf this is the MSDS for it. I wont use it at all. I cannot find the amount of Xylitol in it, could be on the label but I cant find it
  18. wipe something like chilli sauce or a little vicks on the leash and ignore the behavior. Puppy will learn that chewing on the leash it not as exciting as he thought it was! If puppy wants to play teach it which things are play toys and which things are unacceptable to chew. Create the habit now and you wont have a dog that goes around picking up random things to play with either!
  19. so you're a geelong person if you need a hand with anything PM me The most important thing is to create a routine from the moment the puppy comes home. Set the rules from day dot and stick to them. Ignore sooking, whining etc yes the pup may be a little stressed but pandering to stress, especially in terriers, will be your undoing later on nip any biting/nipping in the bud immediately always supervise interaction with the kids. I would let them know NOW and set the ground rules with them (no razzing up the dog, no rough play, teach them how to ignore the pup if it gets nippy or too excitable, what toys and games are OK, crate time is quiet time etc) get the dog used to being touched and groomed a little every day. having its ears, eyes, feet touched, mouth opened, still for brushing etc If visitors pop around that is fine, limit exposure in the first couple of weeks, even maybe put the pup in its crate with a bone to chew as multiple children can be very very exciting to a new puppy so a little play then quiet time.
  20. yeah cos I have to hitch up the old horse and cart being from Geelong and all love_da send a couple of emails and someone from here will be available whenever you need
  21. is there a neighbour or something out there scaring her? Sounds like something has happened. Saving that you can work with the tough love principle, leave her out in small increments and only reward her with inside time when she's calmed down. Feed her outside only etc but I would investigate what is causing such fear
  22. Rysup my rottweiler is allergic to EP - the vet said he's one step away from anaphylaxis so it is banned from my house. Have you tried the RC? THere is also an exclusive protein range. Maxi is the only food he can eat on the whole market. ETA I love the giant breed puppy food I think it's magical. My bordeaux was raised on it and I cannot recommend it highly enough to giant breed owners, especially those with potential growth problems.
  23. such is the pity sparktansy I was asked about airedale's the other day ... they were surprised when I told them I had a whole book of muzzled airedale piccies as they were war dogs and ferocious defenders they must have thought I had gone a bit potty thats why I want to branch out into rare and primative breeds the cotton wool brigade hasnt watered down the genetic cordial yet and made them into soggy saladas. Wow workability there's a novelty - the europeans love it, we here run from it.
