  1. I'd be getting plasma into the pup ASAP and ringing the breeder as it sounds it was contracted either there or on the way. fluids fluids and more fluids do not disconnect that IV until the dog is eating and keeping it down. My boy had it for 3 weeks and pulled through yes it's costly. But many survive with the right therapy ...
  2. I'll top it ... DDB x white shepherd ... mum was the shep oh apparently will be great guard dogs
  3. the reason the test fails is because it relied on them taking samples from different breeds, and seeing which markers for features were common to that breed. Problem is they're all dogs, and breeds can share markers. Have a dog that doesnt fit the lines/samples they used and you get what you see above great novelty scam
  4. you use what is right for the dog. Frankly there are better ways and I have a problem with not stopping a dog showing explosive behavior. Done incorrectly it can push a dog to try harder. There are plenty of us here on DOL that deal with aggression, myself , Erny, Cosmolo, Kelpi-i etc
  5. Contact Mark Singer http://caninetraining.com.au/ as a starting point you need to keep persisting. You purchased a difficult, independant and stubborn breed were you not told that by the breeder? And no one forced to dump a dog at the RSPCA. It's my pet hate when people cannot cope and dont really try everything then dump an ill mannered dog off who will probably fail temperament test.
  6. sounds more like a dog that hasnt been told off more then sexually frustrated ... unless rocking horses now ovulate
  7. they watch the whole process it should stop as soon as he goes near it. Just a simply 'LEAVE IT' and even spray his royal horniness with a spray bottle if he keeps it up. If he cannot behave remove him while they play with it until he learns.
  8. you cannot train into a dog what it does not have. Training is simply harnessing the instincts - you cannot teach a dog with little prey or civil drive to be a security dog, neither can you train a dog with weak nerve. Well some people think you can and then dump them on my doorstep as 'F-ups' and tell me to fix it or send it to the vet. Every dog has a fight or flight instinct but that is not what you should always rely on ... the worst thing I've seen is fear aggression pushed and pushed and then the dog passed off as a patrol dog because it shits its pants and goes anything that moves. You cannot teach a person who is small, shy and nervy to be a prized fighter without some bad effects, neither can you train a dog.
  9. chuck the beef mince. Your diet is still deficient. Minced carcasses, yup good on the right track there, never feed protein without a calcium source especially in growing pups! Also rice and veges, dont boil the bejesus out of the veges. Have a look up BARF diet, there are plenty of threads here with the proper ratios Sometimes pups can grow too fast/knuckle over on the wrong diets and it can happen quite fast especially during growth spurts. Puppy diet is very important, you dont have as much leeway as with adult dogs!
  10. I agree with silverblue ... I am stunned when I am told 'oh they never need bathing or clipping!' yeah right on what planet ... then you get the dog from hell that is one big matt and clipped to the skin. Although I nearly rang a vet once, they told an owner to stop clipping his malamute and that she needed the fur etc etc. Thats all well and good but a regularly clipped malamute left to grow out is a 6 hour grooming job that came away as a blanket of matted fur as it couldnt be brushed properly and the undercoat wove itself into this massive, heavy thick mess.
  11. what a cutie! take a look at fordogtrainers.com, they make stainless steel muzzles that are light and non restrictive at all around the mouth, dogs can eat, drink and pant happily. Might be a little less constrictive then a nylon :D
  12. be very careful how much you add for some animals a little causes a sprinkler effect from the rear end :D
  13. I have used Dr Kim Lim in geelong she also does chiropractic and other alternative therapies for animals with mobility problems and arthritis
  14. why only eukanuba? I see RC as a superior food. You feed your dog what it does well on as long as you're not going downhill in the quality
  15. he's lonely and probably stressing out there alone. He's not a breed to be put out in the shed or left out in the backyard at all! Put him at least in a crate in the house at night
  16. I would be going to a vet to get them checked if the Pica has reached these limits. A blood test would be in order too. If it's not physical it could be a mental thing they learned as pups
  17. no under the tongue. That way if the dog decides to bite down they get their own tongue instead - it's teaching a double whammy

    Bad Dog

dogs dont understand english at all. You can scream 'banana' until you're blue in the face its about the same as whats happening now if she doesnt move get up and move her or take the object. I find 'grrr' makes it a little more black and white or 'ahhh' and when they understand that then add the word you want to use.
  19. what are you currently feeding? THe point is to have as little undigested protein in the poo so if you are feeding dry feed one with less fillers and smaller meals raw meaty bones that are completely edible (chicken frames, necks, lamb flaps etc) also in smaller meals the poos should be smaller, dryer, and unpalatable
  20. perrin why do you plug on with dog obedience? Are you planning to trial the dog or are you just going because? if your dog is obedient and you spend time taking it about places I'd chuck the obedience and if you have a problem get a good trainer for one on one. WHy cause yourself and your dog more stress. because the dog is moving, thinking and there is a level of distraction involved. As soon as you stop *BOOM* explosion of anxiety again because there is little leadership or conditioning in the dogs. They are not learning there is a way to express their anxiety in a health way they just carry on like pork chops. You have to rethink the way training is being dog. If the dog is hyper, doing flips etc And why is your instructor not helping you? Perrin if you're in Melb you're more then welcome to join us, we'll kill two birds with one stone and work on some calming and focus exercises.
  21. after seeing the nose no - but i have seen dogs with infected gums/tooth roots and it can punch up through the face. Cats are great for it too. I agree with steve no more vaccs until this is sorted out - I'd be running to a specialist
  22. could be her adult teeth coming out and causing a lot of swelling - they may be growing out at a funny angle an x-ray would not go astray if it was an allergic reaction it would go down faster then a week with antihistamines. Get a second opinion and 'mention' if it could be teeth and roots pushing
  23. Jaybeece dont bother with the vet, let me know when you have some spare time and we'll do a mini workshop. He'll calm down in no time at all I think yours is more an inconsistancy/anxiety release problem then heading off to the vets.
  24. you're giving in too easily if he comes back for more then repeat the muzzle holding or push him off completely and send him away. Your dog only needs to be told once, not multiple times then it becomes a battle of the witless you can't have things both ways - inconsistancy breeds problem behaviors Sarah8 Dominance isnt that clear cut black and white. My dogs have a bit of free reign, we've had moments of stacks on buried under over 100kg combined weight of dog at our place. They still listen to me and know if they dont there are repercussions. As for the pretending to eat out of the dogs food, really it makes little difference. Obedience, training and all round lifestyle change do more then pretending to eat, it sometimes just becomes a pattern for the dog to sit through and not something that is earth shatteringly life changing to the dogs overall attitude. Remember too the mastiff breeds are more body, touch feely type dogs. They want to lay their bodies against your leg, they want to sit on your feet. It's a breed trait, I've even had shy bitches do it and they they stare up at you tongue lolling for affection. You can't tar all dogs with the same brush. I do believe in dominance but not the decades old couch, food and bed routine.
  25. my god man ... you've come up with a perfect way to fine tune focus through prey drive GENIUS! I can see it now, schutzhund and protection will never be the same again!
