  1. How terrible for the both of you indigirl, poor Reg :D You both did the best you could *could I just add for everyone else, please be aware manufacturers are upping the amount of active ingredient in some products. There is now what they call 'one eat one kill' so the animal simply needs one small feed because the rodents are becoming smarter. Please stay away from even supposedly dog safe ones too!
  2. angelsun there was (well is) a really poor way of using the check chain here which when I saw it mortified me. You walk along, then if the dog veers away from you lean down and give the biggest correction you possibly can usually ripping dogs off their feet or yanking their necks severely. Taught them nothing but to live in fear of a massive random correction. I saw it once and one poor dog flew sideways into the owners leg who then issued him another I love check chains, but to say all dogs need to be ripped off the ground just to heel is cruelty IMO. Also the method didnt employ the owner getting the attention from the dog or rewarding for good behavior. It was nothing or YANK *ugh*
  3. you can always have some Phenergen handy for times like this works well but caution ... some dogs get VERY drowsy! One 25mg tablet is enough
  4. OOoooh poor poppet! Remember rest longer then you think necessary and ease her back into any exercise. Leg damage does take a while and dogs are always keem to get back into it even if there is a little pain left. Oh and anti inflams always give them a false sense of bravado which means they can damage it further without realising! Pain is the bodys mechanism of letting them know to settle down, dont push the point but take that away and you could end up with a cruciate done.
  5. megaderm is pricey - I use human products. Ethical Nutrients make a super strength liquid fish oil which 5mls a day is enough for an ault human I wouldnt call optimum anywhere near good enough for a skin problem dog. Go to a good pet store and try a few formulas like Eagle Pack make a range of explusive protein diets like duck, fish etc Royal Canin has an exclusive prtein formula with no meat at all, or you could try the Maxi adult which I find highly allergic dogs to do well on. There is also a Sensitive 28 formula. pricey but they wipe the floor with supermarket products.
  6. What about Royal Canin? Yup the Eagle Pack holistic formulas are protein exclusive feeding will depend on your dogs. Start with 2/3 of what the packet says then tweak it up or down if you see the dogs are losing/gaining weight too quickly.
  7. I remember the old yank and crank method still being done down here too .. makes you want to put that around the trainers neck and give it a good yank. Some dogs need a correction, but that method just smacks of abuse
  8. I use check chains in my private consults when required. Too many people have been berated and terrified off them I think they're great tools considering EVERYTHING ELSE USEFUL has been banned in this stupid state You correct with the collar, reward with your voice and actions. Simple, effective and faster learning for the dog. I think clubs should not ban equipment. Then again a lot of clubs seem to be just that ... clubs for the select few that fit their criteria and make the rest feel like outcasts with untrainable dogs if they dont fit in the mould. I though that defeated the point of why people became trainers. ..
  9. just be careful check chains are not made to take direct strain along their length and can snap
  10. I wouldnt call them advanced. Also put your foot down with equipment, if they need crutches to handle their dogs then see if they need to spend more time training. you cannot control a dog on this and it is unsafe. Why are they allowed at the club at all?
  11. A dog with an undescended testicle will need surgery to have it found and removed - so I would drop it like a hot potato I would also worry about any breeder offering a one testicle dog on main register as a breeding prospect. There are too many Bordeauxs out there on Mains that should not be. I would ask around some other breeders, especially Leanne from Bellarouge, for advice or other choices.
  12. He's a small dog I'm surprised they want to operate on his hips so young. I would think fix the spine, keep him trim and well muscled coupled with alternative therapies like acupuncture etc would be a better option. If he has a sore back and poor distribution of weight then his legs will hurt. He doesnt have to be HD to hobble about if his back is bad.
  13. what kind of Hip Displaysia operation? There is simply cutting the nerve, femoral head excision, total hip replacement etc
  14. less is more with ears he probably does have some water down there so dont add any more. Mites inflame the skin and cause a brown wax, yeast ears reek to high heaven and the skin usually cracks, reds and dries
  15. yes there is conflicting advice, but you do what works for the dog. If you are plugging away for months, OK time to rethink things. No, nothing is instant but something that DOES work will produce faster results if you are in Vic I'm happy to come give you a session As for the stays, or any behavior for that matter, I see people ask too much. Stay you start from one step back, move back to the dog then reward. Then increase in small increments. Too many people ask for things like 5 second stays off the bat and the dogs will not understand quickly, and owner frustration goes up For her lunging get her into the habit of sitting before she starts the behavior... once she is off on her tangent your control decreases dramatically as does learning. Start at a further distance, make her sit and praise her. I think it is OK for a dog to look at another dog they should just show little/no excitement. Praise for good behavior. If your dog DOES get close and lunge, correct with something like a check chain, turn around and encourage her to follow you. Redirect the mind, calm it down then praise. No meeting dogs unless 1) we get permission and 2) we are well behaved.
  16. Has she defecated? she could have a blockage, a foreign object or potentially an intersusseption. Her stomach is gurgling from gas and movement, if it has been that many days she may need something like metranidazol tablets at least We cant diagnose things over the internet we can make educated guesses. The longer you leave things though usually the more expesive they will be when you eventually decide to take the dog to the vet. I'm sure you would not put up with aching stomach for days.
  17. No it wont be an issue We dont care about fertility, she will never be bred. Aggressive side effects is what we are trying to avoid if possible will give the options, thanks
  18. RC 4800 is a very high energy food made for atheltic dogs not puppies. RC make a lab food, or try the Maxi range. Maybe it has always made her stomach sore and she's finally over it. My Mal was raised on Eukanuba, within a few weeks of being home with me she was completely incapable of eating it without diahrrea, doubling over in cramps, bloat, wind etc. Try the RC large breed puppy, very palatable. 20kg seems quite a bit for a pup of that age, if you can't feel ribs easily your dog is too fat And two meals a day helps keep them interested in food yet not starving
  19. ahhhh yeah no we're trying to prevent hormonal fluctuations in this dog then when the storms over get her speyed
  20. I did it today for a client. Two staffs. Both achieved it. I think if you also have preconceived notions you tend to give up and allow a certain amount of behavior. One required correction, the other no correction just redirection of attention to achieve a calm, quiet dog.
  21. I know greyhounds have injections to prevent them coming into season I have a special case that needs to NOT come into season but cannot be desexed as yet. Could someone give me some options that they have not seen produce adverse behavioral effects! Thanks!
  22. proper ear crop was that nearly all was removed to prevent damage. Different crops for different jobs. CAOs have them removed for weather reasons and prevent damage/infection is it not Lilli? Dobes etc their crop now is fairly different to what they used to look like. Now it does have some function, I'd rather a traditional crop/dock if the dog was working
  23. you are a female, Raf is a male. Now a new male has stepped into his spot in the house and he is trying to take it back. Him trying to 'beg' for Rafs attention is egging him on. He doesnt have to be harsh with Raf at all, just ignore him a bit more and you have to get a little more control over the dog. THe times he actually hurt the dog accidentally, well OK he deserved that :D, but the other times he should just ignore the dog. If Raf is the possessive type, a crate is not always a great idea as it can up the possessive behavior. Let him have his own bed in the bedroom, if he misbehaves then out of the bedroom for a while and he can 'earn' his way back in. As soon as you wake up as well, all dogs out sleep time is over. You just need to work on him a bit, I dont see this out of the ordinary for a male Pei with a female owner (or most other breeds, very common actually)
  24. threw up her water if she drank too much too fast or it was too cold. My bitch does that, she tends to do it while she's still running through :D
  25. I would start adding corrections and removing her from the other dog if she misbehaves. She's old enough to get them and if you're still having the problem after 10 months you need to try something different. This is a problem you fix in a few weeks not months. What does your dog school say?
