  1. Get him off the commercial chicken! He's probably allergic to it! Also I agree stop the fish oil tablets, if you want to try something go for flax seed oil You need to try a novel source of protein like lamb, white fish, game etc mixed with low allergen carbs like sweet potato, rice, etc. Vets All Natural make a skin support powder which with protexin in it to help with digestion, nutrition and balance. As for an antihistamine I use Phenergen for Diesel as it made him a little sleepy as well and at least he got some rest. I stopped all chemicals and simply found the right food, only washed him when he got really stinky and now he shines. I think at least start with this type of diet and see a specialist to see what is actually going on.
  2. 4 days is still a new pup and is probably still settling in to the environment. Give the pup a bit of time to settle in, realise this is its new home and then learn that visitors are great. Saying that I would not wait too long for socialisation of a high quality, or even getting a good trainer to visit to ensure this behavior is not cemented into the dogs long term behavior.
  3. The whole thing is extremely fascinating ... and thanks to the trade show I've blown a decent amount of money  Cant wait for tomorrow!
  4. It is illegal to breed or own an entire pit bull in victoria. Tell her that if she wants to be involved in it when the rangers swoop to go ahead. How idiotic. The two breeds are miles apart and frankly I dont see what situation the pups would be good for at all. If in doubt call her breeder who sold her the pup (if mating happens) and let them give her an earful as well.
  5. by the way I dont have constant access to the internet so if you want it please call/sms me on my mob 0401 389 863
  6. yup I have a ticket, can someone ring me on my mob if they want it, I'm up in Syd at the moment with no internet of my own
  7. Who wants to go ... I'm sick as the proverbial and I just cant fit that in too $80 it's yours
  8. pity you dont have a schutzhund club there she would benefit from prey based obedience, agility and tracking. Your dog has to learn how to switch off. It is possible, she simply has her prey button stuck to on Have a look at some of the free articles on www.leerburg.com on training with prey and markers as a start
  9. I own 3 and have owned many more. I have also had many ruined dogs given to me to retrain and rehome, from pets to protection dogs. I must have broken the mold. It can be common in your situation. Your male has had his stable world rocked by being attacked, many male dogs go into overdrive and try to control their surroundings which usually ends up in fights. I think professional help is the way to go, I wouldnt say get rid of the dogs at all it comes down to how much training you're willing to invest as well as management. At your AmStaffs age desexing will do very little unless his problems are from a testosterone overload ... since his behavior has been fine so far I see no reason to assume this, he's acting like an average entire male bull breed from what I can see. The Corso is coming up in age which he could see as a bit of a threat hence the picking (although not seeing the dogs it is not to say that the corso is not partially to blame in starting fights) You do have an explosive mix of 2 entire males and an entire bitch. I have a similar situation at home with 3 large, strong dogs and I make it work but it takes work. If you need a hand feel free to run me an email, I'm in Sydney this weekend but free from Tuesday onwards. I dont always eat first, in fact I dont eat at all in the morning and all my dogs get fed first. I dont elevate any dog to the top they're all treated equally under the same rules and they know where the boundries are and what happens if they cross them. Eating first and elevating one of the males in this instance will do little, in fact you're liable to create bigger fights if the males consider themselves evenly matched - a still virile, fit AmStaff and an up and coming Corso male. With this you're better to teach the dogs the owner is the ultimate top dog and they're not to put a toe out of line or else. Reward the good, give a consequence for the bad.
  10. yes. Idiot owners who dont train them, feed them a rubbish diet, let them get to double the ideal weight, let them jump about as pups then complain all the problems are the 'lines' or 'genetics'.
  11. Tess is old. She probably cant join in the fun to that degree any more, gets excited and (being a weim) barks you can try locking them up if you go out but really I wouldnt be putting anti bark collars on an older dog. Why dont you go speak to the neighbours, have a friendly chat and slip in 'oooh the dogs dont bother you do they'? I did that with mine and I get a heads up if my lot are being poo heads when I'm not home
  12. breathing ... hmm ever listened to some of those DDs or byb smallies with the elongated pallates that choke them? Walking ... yup see a lot of SWFs and small breeds poorly bred with angled, crooked legs, knees that flick about c-section ... so we do the BYB/puppy farmer trick and just let the dog die without intervention? Women around the world need it too should we charge them with child abuse? eye problems ... who tests for things? Oh look reg breeders. Who breeds dogs with proper shaped heads? Ooops look at that ... reg breeders skin problems ... err yeah OK so the 'english staffy' and 'blue' craze riddled with problems is the ANKCs fault is it back and hips ... rememberdiesel.webs.com what a crock of sht.
  13. by the way there are always payment plans available for fines. Fines not paid go to Civic Compliance Vic and from there you arrange payment plans of whatever you afford, they are very understanding about it.
  14. if the dogs are not registered to the current residential address then legally they are not registered. Why is that fine there? Because of the time and frustration it takes staff to try and track down owners who dont update details. I dont know how many hours and 6-degree-of-separation leads I have had to chase because people change address/details/SURNAMES and dont change it on their pets details. Not fair. Fines are there to 1) help you remember to be responsible and 2) ensure there is a pound, ranger and facilities provided for the community Never had a dog escape or had a fine. Have had the ranger come once on an unjusitfied complaint and he spent half the day rolling about with the dogs playing. Every time we move the first thing I do is update microchip details and put a hideously reliable backup as the second contact. I registered my dogs here in Geelong and made sure the woman at the council understood the breed and didnt write 'Belgian Malamute' or some other stupidity as commonly happens.
  15. oh yeah I cant STAND music and funny cursors ... AND SPARKLES ... american websites seem to be drenched in it. Sparkly banners, little gifs everywhere jeezus it's like an epileptics nightmare I also dont want to see just show photos. If thats all there is I leave. I prefer to see how the dogs are when running about at home/river/park etc to hint at their true shape and movement not just a dolled up, stacked to hide possible conformation faults photos. - blatantly butt ugly or sub standard dogs being bred from (especially bitches) - no mention of dogs personality at all - massive rants on puppy pages about how strict the breeder will be with their placing. Yes I know you care but a little tact goes a long way - huge websites with minimal info spread over millions of pages - no pedigrees or health scores see ya What I like - photos of puppies who have been sold now in their new homes - achievements pages - a friendly tone to the website - spelling and grammar correct - good assortment of quality photos - not afraid of a bit of honesty in the website - rainbow bridge pages ... I dont mind them at all - easy to navigate, to the point but not drowning in drivell and rambling information. Enough to get the prospective puppy person interested
  16. he could have been stepped on or just roughly handled. True he is a tiny tacker and it's rather daunting for a dog to be reached down to sit on the floor and do a bit of play when you're at his level so he gains some confidence. I would just be ignoring the ducking behavior it's probably just residual. Show him there's nothing to be afraid of, dont grab him quickly or swing him about. If you dont fulfil expectations for him and in face create a new happy situation he will grow out of it.
  17. I buried it over a foot down and we made our own premix concrete. I made the trench fairly wide (I think just under a foot wide) so if they tried to dig near the fence they would hit concrete. I put soil back over the top so the grass would grow. you wont find chain mesh at Bunnings. You have to go to a fencing place. We got the posts at the recyclers for about $120 for the lot. The chain mesh was a few hundred dollars (by the way be careful there is a razor tipped version which we had), quick set concrete is about $7-8 for 20kg. You can easily put ping string on it, but frankly I would only bother around the top. If you look at the photos you do have to run tension wire (we did double strand) top and middle so you have you know how to use strainers. Then (this was the painful part) in the freezing col you have to thread thin wire around every post to hold the chain mesh on, pull it tight and wind it every few inches to make sure the dogs jumping at the mesh wont knock it down. My hands were raw and almost bleeding So wish we could have stayed there. That was at OHs parents place, they promised us some land on their farm to build a house so I spent what money I had to build this. Then they renegged on the offer and told us to basically piss off
  18. it is important dogs learn canine behavior and body language from each other. Trick is to find well trained dogs to do it with, not the free for alls people tend to call dog parks that do more harm then good.
  19. skybus is the easiest way and can take a decent amount of luggage, if you book accomodation hotels are used to interstate travellers and can recommend ways to get there quite cheaply. At least in the CBD there is everything, food, clothing, hairdressers, major public transport etc
  20. we built this for 3 dogs, dogue de bordeaux, german shepherd and malinois it was about 40m of fencing, buried into the ground (concreted as well) and over 6 foot tall. We did it ourselves, much cheaper and larger then a small run
  21. happypaws that method you described is fine for some dogs, especially small pups in some instances. Before everyone jumps down my throat it actually does teach the dog something. But it has its time and place. I think for waffle have another treat or wing etc in your hand. Offer him the other wing and see the dogs reaction. If he's still resource guarding then definately call a behaviorist, if his demeanour softens then teach him swapsies ... Here you take this for the one you have, make a MASSIVE fuss of the dog for being good and coming too you for another treat. Gradually you can decrease the value of the barter item Thats funny enough people on here do it all the time. And TOT is pinned who says that is good for this cavie x either.
  22. taking her out less and less only compounds the problem as you are finding out. The less she goes out and learns, the more her excitement increases, the more your frustration increases and it's a vicious circle. You NEED to take her to obedience or call a trainer in. Dog like this end up at pounds every day because they're 'difficult, untrainable, etc'. I train at a dog school as well as train privately, and I see people embaressed by their dogs but I tell them DONT BE! You shouldnt be embaressed if you have a dog that you are trying to help , in fact you should be congratulated. And we dont have whispering, staring etc it's not allowed and frankly it doesnt make a happy environment. You purchased a high energy, intelligent, active breed and you need to cater to its breed requirements. Also what works for one dog does not necessarily work for the other especially when it comes to cross breeds. There is not one piece of equipment that is breed specific, they are individual dog specific. If your dog was vomiting on a check chain then you were simply choking it. It is NOT meant to choke the dog. Practice in the backyard if you have to, let the dog on a loose lead and you simply pop in a quick motion, not draaaaaaaaaag the dog. If the dog shoots ahead or pully you simply pop the lead to give a correction and call the dog back to you, reward for compliance.
  23. yup you need to go to obedience, not only for your own skills but to help socialise the dog btw what the heck is an alusky?
