  1. it's not a choke chain since you're not choking the dog with it. You're providing clear, consistant messages to your dog that his behavior is unacceptable. You shouldnt feel guilty about that at all. Dont be guilted into thinking that using an aversive is a cruel thing, it's not. Dogs correct each other and believe me if one finds something acceptable you should sometimes see what they do to stop the other! If it is not harming him, then stop worrying and concentrate on having a happy, healthy dog.
  2. yup Winston is leash trained. He also tried to crawl up the other trainers leg for dog treats I thought it would be great for the younger dogs to learn how to behave around the smaller creatures which many cannot get access to in their younger days. Same concept Bisart, the ferret was totally nonchalant about the border collie pup that tried to round it up and just looked at him, turned around and waddled off poor BC just stood there puzzled and then followed him about for a while like 'well you can't herd em, join em'. Nah Jigsaw I wouldnt let my special little man get stressed out. All our ferrets are very used to my giant dogs and are absolutely fearless about them so I thought it great to introduce the school dogs to something different and non reactive. The two whippets on the other hand thought their eyes were going to fall out of their heads! ETA I am thinking of bringing down the other ferrets soon in a cage and maybe the rabbit who is also harness trained. Although he is a bit of a liability, he'll beat up any dog no matter what the size! His tally is 2 Griffons and a labrador so far O_o
  3. education is the key but getting there before the laws are changed. I notice there is always a lot of bru ha ha after the deed is done ... shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. Government policy is hard to reverse particularly when the original morons lobby so hard to have it passed anyway. There are states that allow things like schutzhund, prongs, hunting etc to happen. Using GOOD examples from there and also educating the public to understand the truth behind these animals is key. Too many people think bitework is dangerous, prongs are evil, hunting dogs kill things etc.
  4. you know the RSPCA ... never one to shrink back from an attention whoreing opportunity for their agendas are they
  5. I didnt see any promotion of oodles I simply saw the OP asking a logical question. Maybe some people need to stop jumping down peoples throats so quickly.
  6. now our school is all about socialising and making great friendly dogs ... I can now certify 3 puppies are critter friendly I took my friendly ferret down and he had a romp with the pups that turned up. Even shared some treats with them! He's absolutely bomb proof which is great and doesnt react back at them so they got used to him so quickly. The pups loved him and had a great time learning how to behave around small animals nicely
  7. I dont see them tailored at all. Clueless people buy equally clueless, randomly bred dogs. There are plenty of people who herd, hunt, vermin control, protection dogs, guide dogs, detection dogs etc. I would never buy an alarm when I have my dogs. Constricting laws are making dogs obselete before trends are. We're being forced out of real sports by the SpEsHaL people who have no clue about anything but have clout in government. We cant course, we cant protection train or do schutzhund, we cant hunt deer unless dogs are a certain breed, we cant do thism we cant do that ...
  8. bordeauxs are popular with backyard breeders, puppy farms now and fighters. I have had people offer money for my entire boy to breed fighting dogs with. Problem is they see the DDB as a massive APBT and it fails. One bloke in Melbourne crossed APBT with DDBs and they were lanky, weak nerved failures. Probably stolen then found out they were desexed or unbreedable and killed them. What a horrific thing to go through. And yes it is terrifying that someone could do this to an animal
  9. diet wise, especially when growing, it's worth paying more. You get the best out of your dog with the best nutrition (and you dont just find the dog doing massive cheap dog food poos everywhere) You move across the board with quality, not down Dog food labels are quite easy - if it says meat by product, wheat, mixed cereals etc or real meat is not first on the list then dont bother with it.
  10. supercoat is nothing more then grain laden junk food. He doesnt need tuckertime at all, why dont you get him some nice chicken wings to chew on instead. Also you dont have to feed a lot of royal canin, especially if you add some raw meaty bones to the mix. Gretel is right you get what you pay for with foods. Your breeder probably would have told you that :D Oh it's better just to buy one big bag it will last you quite a long time and is better value but shop around for it there can be up to $10 difference between stores. good treats for puppy preschool is cold cooked pork sausage or hotdogs, some tiny bits of cheese etc. Something really tasty and you only use teeny fingernail sized treats when training otherwise you end up with a bloated tired puppy (or one who then runs around a throws up all that rich food )
  11. is he outside before he comes in? DO you have possums/fruitbats/wildlife that could be dropping poo he's eating before bed? Or a neigbour chucking over dinner scraps? I'd still do nothing but boiled chicken and rice until it stops, it cant hurt at all
  12. he sounds sick. Poo like that is not normal and sounds like it wakes him up and he just goes before a whine gets out. Go take him to the vet and get it checked out. He should not be eating rich food just some boiled chicken and rice until it firms up again. Despite what you feed his system will be upset and pretty much anything will give him the runs. I wouldnt be angry I'd be looking for the reason your dog has a sick stomach.
  13. fail. lamb flaps, ribs etc big chewy parts the dogs have to use their molars on to cut through will do the job. He better tell my dogs that then, everyone sparkly white and never used a toothbrush in my life.
  14. for those wanting to feed something like rabbit or other very lean game meats as a primary meat source be aware they can be too low in fats. There is a condition called 'rabbit starvation'. Go get a .22 and start shooting or make friends with ferreters. commercial rabbit prices are stupidity. We're going out again this weekend, hope to get at least 15 bunnies for the freezer
  15. do the maths ... considering the high turnover of puppy farmers who would keep pups no longer then 8 weeks (let's be optimistic and say 3 months) thats up to 50 dogs bred in a 3 month period, in 12 months thats 200 + dogs coming out of one 'limited' breeding establishment. Thats still a hell of a lot of dogs and money. Not really prohibitive is it.
  16. too late if they're already sick. The point of antibodies is the bodies way of mopping up nasty viruses and bacteria. They bind to them and make them useless to continue breeding in the host. Antibodies are make by memory cells created when an animal first contacts the disease (which is why we vaccinate, to create immune memory) When you vaccinate though remember you are flooding the system. Their immune system will be slightly weaker in the week after you vaccinate as well
  17. for inside get him a nice crate with bedding. If he cannot access he cannot chew since you have a chewer you needs some better, hardier toys and treat balls. Feed him out of his toys, rotate them and exercise the dog as much as possible! http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AUSSIE-DOG-TOY-DISC...=item414e5087aa http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Super-Tough-Rubber-...=item4cee1e4dba http://stores.shop.ebay.com.au/AUSSIE-DOG-..._nkw=aussie+dog http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Tough-By-Nature-Goo...=item414e86b417 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Triple-Crown-Everla...=item335b3436f8
  18. mm very rare but Eurasier? nothing else purebred fits a giant lappy description ... could have been a mix
  19. Have you thought about a Dogue de Bordeaux? From a decent breeder who doesnt have nervy lines, they're great dogs
  20. I agree totally. A good trainer should also understand their limitations with a particular dog and then go 'hey call X because they are more experienced then me and I wont be able to give you all the help you need' particularly if you are going to limit the methods you use to train. That is why I liked the NDTF course, you were offered everything and then you used what you found useful and practical. Better to know more then just one linear way of thinking. I believe highly in the value of positive reinforcement BUT not as a total system of training for every dog and write off the ones that dont comply. Hell I even use a clicker sometimes (lets not spread that around shall we ) I have read the course book for the Delta course and it had me puzzled (actually, in stiches but anyway). It seemed very rewritten with a bit of bias. The trainers and members I came into contact with vehemently pronounced the evils of check chains etc. Most had never used one before. I attended the Delta Therapy Dog training day and the lady there was on about how horrible they were - again never used one and was not a dog trainer in the slightest. I consider that hypocritical. I give things a go before I pronounce them evil or a failure (well most things, common sense dictates things like beating dogs is just not on) And I also will never make a person feel bad for using something that works ... I have noticed berations and guilt trips becoming a common thing from some positive trainers and I find that abhorrent.
