I need my job unfortunately Lyndsay The comp did sound poorly put together, they firstly didnt even get a license to run a competition! I would worry about a breeder who could supply a pup a month. If they really want to promote why not win discount on a kelpie pup or simply the free training for your dog/s? Or has been mentioned more farm gear/voucher. Ahhh so hard when I'm trying to attract more pet people to the store then that poster is there, boring into the back of my conscience.

my dogs could never care less, any dogs staying over soon realise there is nothing to fuss about when they see my 3 legs up asleep. If your dog IS hurting itself please go to the vet, get something like ACP tablets and crate the dog for its own safety. I've seen a dog go through a glass pane, and had one of my own do it (thankfully smashed the frame and didnt cut himself) it's not nice and they can bleed to death quickly if they sever a major artery.

I asked about that too Ish, it is also a Go Getta kelpie pup, he's raffling them off in there too

I had a Gallagher rep come into work today. He presented us with a massive poster of a promotion, buy a certain amount of electric fencing gear and go into the draw to win a Go Getta Kelpie puppy. So I said to the rep, do you realise the RSPCA does not condone animals as prizes at all and you will probably get a few phonecalls. "I wont be the one getting them, hah" I hate the competition. I do not agree with it at all I'm going to speak to my boss tomorrow but still, I had palpatations that the REP had no issue at all with the comp. I see the actual promotion has tried to make it OK that they are giving away a pup but it doesnt gel well with me at all am I just being sensitive?

who knows these days .. not the most handsome of dogs though is he!

from the sounds of it you want something a little more low energy, easy and fairly independent since you already have your routine. If you are not really committed to agility and performance then I wouldnt go for a higher energy dog, if you get bored of it you are not stuck with a high energy dog with no outlet. I think most of the breeds recommended wouldnt be just right unless you found an unusually quiet individual Why not just get another rescue dog. You will know the personality and energy level or an ex show dog. Or go up a notch to the mastiffs. Bull Mastiff, Dogue, etc ok maybe a little more stubborn but more laid back then the hunting and herding breeds on the go wise and LOVE people.

whoah they cannot keep your money! WTF!! How terrible they do that in time of panic and emergency!

it's not about a look, its about overal muscular and skeletal structure, who cares what shape the dog ultimately is. Testosterone has its place in the growth of males especially those that need to grow slowly over a longer period of time. If a dog has too much testosterone then there will be behavioral issues. I recommended desexing in one young dog of med breed because his testes were huge (too much so for his age) and he was territorially aggressive to anything and everything, just oozed macho meathead attitude. Desexed *poof* aggression level plummeted.

are we talking commercial tripe or actual 'whisperers' people who are confident, calm, able to communicate with the dog on its own level, pick up and understand how the dog is feeling WITHOUT BIAS or BS. If you are a person who is afraid or uncertain you will not do well. When I was still in my early teens I did some work experience at the RSPCA, and there was a dog on death row for attacking a person. It looked so frightened so I cracked open the door a little and got down, it was OK and I inched my way in until it crawled into my lap. Staff found me on the floor of the pen with this dog laying quietly in my lap, they were horrified. Poor dog was just frightened and when I didnt show fear or stress it settled and accepted a final bit of love. Basic understanding and reading a dog is not hard they show their emotions so clearly most of us just dont take the proper time to read them. Dogs are not as complicated as we make them out. I think these days we could all be more like the old time whisperers if we spent more time with our animals and simply paid attention to what they do and we do.

I too work on myself as a reward for the dog. Food and toys are involved sometimes, ultimately its attention from me they want, I treat the rest as icing on the cake I say stick with what you know. As for service dogs, considering they dont live with their handlers and need to be able to handed over to another person at another point you want something else to be the focus of their reward. Otherwise hand it over to another handler and get what my dogs do - pfffft no That and the work they do like bitework HAS to be highly rewarding in the event itself otherwise they wouldnt do it or lose enthusiasm over time. ETA food doesnt mean motivation or enthusiasm in a dog moreso then praise. I see a lot of owners really unenthusiastic or being just plain boring so we have to introduce something else, they're just so low value in their demeanour not because the dog doesnt see the value. I would like to actually see a lot more owner-reward based being encouraged so people get a little more motivated

I wouldnt until he has done most of his growing, 18months - 2 years. Errr your aiming for a healthy dog - so what only purebreeds deserve to grow to their full potential? Cross or not he's still a very large dog and I would wait. Vets dont necessarily provide an unbiased view on this by the way

there are plenty of trainers who can do it and show you. http://www.petresortsaustralia.com.au/ email steve austin in NSW he could recommend someone up in your state to help you do it properly. I know he snake proofs his working dogs and has to ensure its 100%
-
I would keep the dead snake as a scent and borrow a reeeeeeeeeeally good e-collar

yup one little bitch got me a couple of months ago with the big buckle of her leather collar ... paddle pop stain for ages

not all pig dogs are bull arabs actually. THere are few actual bull arabs recognised under the BA registery compared to simply type bull arabs. Then there are lurchers which are deerhound, greyhound x etc. These are not on registries. Bandogs are PP and some hunting but they will not be recognised here. no state will recognise personal protection 'crosses' or encourage unrecognised crosses to be bred for hunting. Hell they wont even recognise foxhounds for deer in Vic anymore. If you want to reduce puppy numbers you have to make the ill bred backyard and puppy farm dogs worth less money. That is the driving force not accidents. When you can breed your random thingy and think you'll get a few thousand for the litter well why wouldnt you? While people pay stupid pricing the cycle continues. The difference is BYBers are not held accountable for their breeding. microchipping and having the breeders name permanently on it too would be a fab idea.
-
the problem is not all unwanted pups are accidents either
-
a lot of good hunting dogs and pig dogs are cross breeds. So we wipe them out and replace them with what?
-
WTF ... how big a grant did he get for that?
-
well then dont breed him dear. you have to make it fair. Animals are in shelters because they're untrained and randomly bred before sheer numbers. Not every non ANCK breeder is a person who churns out dogs for profit either, not all breeds are ANKC recognised. puppy farmers - gone BYBers - if you want to breed at all there should be a license petstores - I agree with mandatory desexing from pet stores and pounds. At least if you breed it get it from a good source.
-
I dont think it should be mandatory for everyone. I have two entire dogs and I wont change it. Neither will be bred from. I think signing a council contract that you will not breed would be the way to go if anything, if you have a whoops litter you have to abort/desex all dogs from then on. Pretty easy really
