yeah I still get the old 'But Dr Harry said' from my relatives. Oh and the best one I'm not a good dog trainer because I dont drop everything and train my dipshit primadonna cousins dog for free multiple times. Did it once, now you pay bimbo. Dog ended up given away and now pumps out the puppies There seems to be no crossing over of the fact my dogs are well behaved, relatives ooh adn ahh over them then dont want to take advice from me I have given up and just refuse to answer any more questions.

theyre good at picking up visual clues and getting food. Wouldnt call that up there. I would consider a dog that gets frustrated and works it out for himself without having to look back at the handler a good problem solver, one that does it of its own volition for its own reward, not just what button of the handlers to push for treats

joy. Give them my contact details I manage to put everyone back in their box

She's good at home but you need to practice under distraction. What techniques has the school shown you? Are the instructors helping at all? Maybe get a one on one trainer to give you some tips then start going back to dog school. I know its hard and can be embaressing but Rome wasnt build in a day. Hang back from the other dogs, work on control. A corrective collar is a good start and dont feed her that day AT ALL so she will be so hungry she will want to pay attention to you and treats instead of other dogs. If the school cannot or will not help you then find another capable. It is not a problem that should preclude you from attending but you should be getting help with it or behavior like this just snowballs.

he will be interested if he realises they're his only source of food. He's obviously used to sloppy refined foods with taste promoters like fat and sugar so there will be a period of adjustment. A little hunger never killed anyone

get a packet of antihistamines, I find phenergen is great. For your dog just start with one, it will make them drowsy. I have used 2 at a time and it really settles it. Sounds like a contact allergy that he's just ripped raw and continued to irritate.

I think a lot of it too comes down to how we raise our dogs. We do almost everything for them and it then becomes a use it or lose it type scenario. A lot of dogs will survive if they are dumped or turn feral, they have not lost innate abilities to scavenge, hunt, or survive. Breed shapes and maintenance levels will also play a lot in survival, a little pug will fare far worst then a german shepherd out in the bush. I see so many dogs with a complete lack of mental process. It is not because they are stupid, but because through training their owners have taught them to switch off, obedience seems to be a huge factor in this. When I did a little test, I wanted my class to teach their dogs to target with a stick. Most of them straight away gave an obedience command and the dog shut off. It stopped thinking and just sat there waiting for the next command. I got so many 'oh my dog is dumb' ... but give them free reign, say nothing and soon the dogs were picking it up quickly and many learned to touch with paw, nose and open mouth in a few minutes. The average backyard does not challenge the dog to explore, in fact we choose our precious gardens over the dogs natural exploratory instincts.

Honestly I completely avoid any dog roll, can or sachet. All my dogs get raw meat on the bone no matter what the age - so your pup would do fine on lamb neck, chicken neck, chicken wing etc. Save the money from the rolls etc and just get one good dry food like Eagle Pack, Royal Canin, or at a pinch Advance make a puppy rehydratable formula. Believe me at his age he should have no probs with puppy kibble though they're fantastic chewers

Inattention In A Young Dog
Nekhbet replied to Rileys mum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
if you want them to be interested in food without the upset stomach just dont feed him the morning you intend to train. A hungry dog will always pay attention. Treats are fingernail size at the most and by that I dont mean your thumb. He just sounds scattered. Put a martingale on him and give him a little correction if his excitement and inattentiveness gets too far. As for focus I would rather you mark the dog for naturally looking at you then using watch command. I see so many dogs just use focus as another trick. Everytime he looks at you mark, reward. Especially when you're out for a walk, change direction, speed etc and everytime he complies or looks at you mark (YES or GOOD) and reward ALSO VERBALLY. I also find owners talk too much at their dogs, so leave your voice simpy for verbal praise and marking, or giving cues like 'come on' etc. The dog will actually pay attention and want to do it for you, it takes very little time. As for walking, if he shoots ahead do a 180 degree turn, let him have the leash and call him. If he doesnt follow he will correct himself, if he does follow and focus there is a reward. This works for dogs of all ages, at 6 months dogs have more then a 2 minute attention span, the trick is to work out how to harness it properly. -
yup there was rumours of KNVP coming to USA but it wont happen. Probably a good thing they hold onto KNVP everything else that seems to get out of its country of origin becomes crippled or completely removed from what it was originally. Plus we can barely keep up with IPO/Sch I dont think this country is really ready for ringsport. More is the pity about that. We'll all just have to move to a normal european country. ahahaha dont get me started on this. But remember if its ANKC recognised and your dog passes it will gosh darn it you must have an A1 class working dog on your hands there head ... desk... honestly bugger sports I would rather see more dogs out there hunting, pointing, herding, coursing etc with their owners. Doing the real thing and not just a simulation.

he gets on well with dogs but I'm not one for short blokes

Running the risk of repeating myself Cosmolo Ring Kim Lim NOW. I recommended her months ago to you. http://www.hightonvet.com.au/ Bowen on its own isnt enough, she combines everything and gets them walking. Glucsamine and chondroiten comes in a human capsule form push it down his throat (min 1000mg) and follow it with some cheese. Be tough. No dog will starve itself to death. If he does get emaciated put a feeding tube down his nose and syringe it in if he's that poorly. Get yourself some super strength fish oil liquid, the ethical nutrients one and pour two capfulls of that down his throat every day. Chuck the Cartrophen I found it absolutely useless in dogs with big problems like Diesel. I wrap his elbows with some padding and vetwrap when they're really sore and keep the dog in a coat all the time, no outside time unless for toilet in winter and put booties on if he's going to be outside the cold travels up the leg. Antiinflammatories will not help him because they help mask the pain and he makes it worst, then they wear off and he's screaming again, try the antihistamines. I went through the same with Diesel, hell I was carrying the poor dog to piss and he spent the rest of his day lying about or screaming with every movement. The only reason I put Krueger to sleep was his hip fell out and his leg was just rotating in the spot out of the socket. I tell this too you because it has worked for me and many others, it hasnt costed a fortune and it wont hurt the dog. You snapped at me last time and I am offering you a non surgical option that may make Dexter happier. Take it or leave it.

Scenario- What Would Your Advice Be As A Trainer?
Nekhbet replied to melzawelza's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
normal pack dynamics, the up and coming younger male is taking his anxiety and excitement out on the older male. Dog fights will break out when excitement peaks, the bitch is not a factor in this situation, two rather evenly matched males are. Also the dogs sounds understimulated, underattended and over excited. Why not let them in the house? I would also be separating the older from the younger and gain control on walks while they are ON LEAD and not able to fight. -

Miffy asking for food will be more habitual and them giving snacks so she keeps begging. with a dog that small I would be tempted to switch to raw, roo mince, some boiled rice and veges to fill it out and some chicken wings to keep her going in between feeds. Feed once in the morning then wing to chew in the arvo.

watch all the bored doggy housewives throw themsevles at him now

I'll join the queue DDB - was limping heavily as an adolescent and couldnt walk for more then 5 minutes at a time. Vet quoted $1800 shoulder surgery just by looking at the dog and moving his leg about a bit. Went to the chiro turned out to be a bad disc in his lower back and he was throwing all the weight foreward some time later someone broke in and beat him on the face with a piece of timber. Eye had an ulceration on it and his face was swollen. 1st vet just said the eye was gone and remove it. I tried another vet who did some steroids, antibiotics etc and we now have a mostly functional eye with only a little bit of pale scarring on it. I dread the poor people who don't have the savvy to second guess and roll with some vets decisions or worst, PTS. no apparently some vets are magical and can tell just from a little manipulation that your dog will be a cripple and you will need to take out a second morgage in order to fix it.
-
I'll just have to buy one and let everyone know how it goes ... oh damn
-
I rarely go to the vet either unless its dire straits. If they have food, water and shelter then they're fine by the law. Not having a coat in show condition is not an offence in the slightest. Unless these dogs are actually suffering for some reason I think you're over thinking the whole thing. Not every dog sleeps on a human bed, gets groomed professionally and eats a premium diet. Doesnt mean they're mistreated.

What Would You Do If Your Dog Was Sick
Nekhbet replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
To me it comes down to quality of life. If the dog is going to have a long term problem then I am happier to PTS while it is still reasonably functional then wait until it's totally decrepit or on deaths door. Cost is not that huge an issue although if it was stupidly astronomical I would have to have a good look at it. I love my dogs but I am not going to bankrupt myself or put the dog through hell. When my DDB had a lump I decided if he needed chemotherapy then he would be PTS. Too much money I dont have and frankly that is suffering in a creature that has no idea why it is experiencing what the procedure. -
oooh yup ringsport and even just have schutzhund here in Vic ... those were the days.. *dreams*
-
from what I hear they're more civil then prey but similar to mals ... some say better would like a dutchie to try out one day
-
yup had a Hypro vet talk up his foods one day ... uh huh. When you actually put some meat in the dog food I'll listen that it is a superior, nay, 'premium' food
-
Dogpro 4x2s contain preservatives, check the website. The BestCare Box 1 4x2s also contain preservatives. They're both just wheat based junk food really no wonder your dog is hyperactive. I used Box 1 biscuits for a while (not as the sole food source) and my dogs hair fell out and he stank, the other fared no better. Why dont you find some dog cookie recipes on the net, bake them then leave the oven door adjar on low to dry them out to the same consistancy as 4x2s

Is It Ok To Feed Prescription Diets On A Long-term Basis?
Nekhbet replied to LDH's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
most of the Hills prescription diets are complete and can be fed long term, I know when I worked at the vet a few dogs were on I/d permanently due to pancreatitis. If she's doing OK on it I wouldnt go rocking the boat
