worming is simply a flush out of the system, there is no real residual effect. Worm them all in 2 days as well to make sure there are no more lurkers

Help Needed For An Allergic Staffy
Nekhbet replied to 2staffys's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
you need to get him off that junk food ASAP. Try royal canin large breed, eagle pack or nutro. Also get off the dog rolls completely, if you want to add something fresh try preservative free kangaroo meat or lamb necks to munch on. He's lacking on the inside if he's always itchy and scaley. You can also try the ethical nutrients high strength liquid fish oil on top of new food. As for the bedding unless your dog is allergic to nylon sounds like a hard sell to me from the vet. Wash it only it a hot wash and dont use detergents, then leave it inside to dry so the pollens dont get into it. Tablets, I prefer to just use antihistamines. -
It probably was backed by members, especially the german shepherd people who went through a lot of hoo ha to get the Shutzhund titled imports from Germany (who all need to pass Sch in order to breed) exempt from the dangerous dog legislation (ie need to be desexed etc) to protect their investment. Under the SV system in germany all dogs need to pass a shutzhund test and in order to get new blood in they HAVE to import a schutzhund titled dog. Doing this will mean there is no proof on paper the dog has done bitework. They probably wont remove the BH as it is a companion dog test that proves the dog is stable in temperament. I do think its bullshit though as yes, many people who want to purchase working dogs want to see what the sire and dam has achieved. Now we wont have proof of that on paper. In fact ... backfire ... without proof people can now claim whatever the hell they want with their breeding stock. Frankly I would be very angry if I was a breeder of working line dogs especially having spent a lot of money on imports - now they want to remove proof of workability. I can see the ANKC is not for working breeders at all. Dissapointing considering I was going to fork out for a kennel name etc to become a reg breeder And also true, how can the ANKC decide what they will and wont accept being members of the FCI?

RSPCA had minimal to do with this, Animal Lib gathering support and getting people to write in did more. They simply sent in one letter on their behalf. The puppy farmer applying already had another

Possible Hip Dysplasia In Amstaff?
Nekhbet replied to DerRottweiler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
yup I agree go anyway. -
if he goes for the bite then thumb under the tongue and press gently until he gives in, say nothing, then reoffer your hand. If he doesnt bite praise him. Nip it in the bud sooner then later I do it with all bitey pups and they get the idea VERY quickly.
-
eh? All Sch titles have a bitework component except the preliminary BH test. Hence why ANKC wants to strip all Sch titles off dogs, even Sch1 proves it has done some bitework. Dont have it on paper, cant prove anything to my council ranger who wants you to obide by Victorian law for your new expensive import.
-
Thats very handy considering they want to get around the DD laws with their import german shepherds - no Sch/IPO no proof of bitework on australian paperwork. What an absolute crock. Faith in the ANKC dropping.

Meh? I think people on here have a preconceived notion of an aversive. If we find it unpleasant or have an idea that it is negative then the dog must find it an aversive. Not true at all. Let's look at humans, some people are terrified out of their skins with needles while others sit for hours getting tattoos. Traditionally we think, oh wow that must be so painfull etc how could anyone do that ... yet those with tattoos realise the pain in actually quite minimal if not sometimes totally unnoticable - therefor it can be appetitive. Some dogs are frightened of loud noises, yet others have no problem - eg my dogs can sleep through gunshots a few meters away while other dogs would run a mile. It's lound and to most unpleasant, yet mine dont give a rats. It is a dog whos threshold of what is considered a punishment or even an aversive is higher, that is part of it. Hence the difference between working and show line dogs most of the time, what makes one dog avoid like crazy the other will show interest or resilience. Most of this is genetic. And I dont believe that punushment simply suppresses behaviour. In some cases with ill timed or weak punishments yes, all they do is temporarily suppress. But the right punishment can extinguish the behaviour. The dog still needs to be shown an alternative if you want to do behaviour modification properly, but that it simply suppresses is a fallacy ... along with if you correct an aggressive dog you will make it more aggressive OR the doozy you will make it MORE aggressive towards its target uh huh. A dog obviously will avoid something they perceive to be aversive. And really it is perception. Some dogs shy at a breeze rattling leaves while other dogs can take a few good hits with a stick and not flinch. Some dogs sleep happily in a crate while others scream, panic and shit everywhere while tearing the crate to shreds to escape. well your dog obviously has the intelligence to move when something is to fall on his head. Maybe the rewards are not outwardly visible to you - obviously to him he finds it rewarding enough to risk something falling on his head. Think about it, if the fear outweighed the reward he wouldnt do it. Obviously the fear is slim to none. I mean pushes his buttons in that the whole situation satisfys something for him - hell you never know maybe he likes trying to make things fall on his head to get a bit of a thrill, like puppies with new things that then proceed to scare themselves and go off on an excitement tangent pretending to be frightened but actually having a ball.

it's not illegal its just against their policy for most countries ebays. Obviously singapore ebay has no problem with it at all.

sounds like an elongated soft palate, common in the flat faced dogs. If it's happening regularly then definately see a vet about it and see if it's at the stage where it may require surgery down the track. Meanwhile do not let the dog get too hot and make sure it doesnt scoff down its food until you have it checked.

my comment was what a dog finds aversive not how treatment affects behaviour. I'm saying that obviously your dog finds no aversive in the situation. It does not stop the behaviour. Obviously its satisfying something, be it drive, curiousity or now its a game to scare ourselves. Your other dog just doesnt have a reason to try and get through situations hence he doesnt try. It doesnt mean situations have to be aversive, some animals just cant be bothered because they see no point to it, ie there's nothing worth it on the other side, or in the bin etc. A reward doesnt have to be revolutionary to set a behaviour, it just has to push the right button in the dog to make it ocntinue the behaviour. that simply means the punisher was not suffient to stop the behaviour. It may have stopped a soft dog, but a harder dog will try again if the punishment is not enough. Its part of the personality of the dog. Every creature has a different personality and their behaviour is derived from that. One dog sees no reason to try something new, while the other has a greater natural curiosity and investigative drive. It's the same as some people go out there and try new things, while others are happy to just sit in their rut and not go out of their comfort zone even though there might be something out there better for them. Some are just happy as they are and see no need in trying new things. I wouldnt consider that an aversive. It more seems like she exhibits an initial residual hesitaion which she overcomes. You're lucky your dog obviously has some decent genetics.

obviously its not since the singapore one has a live animal section

I wouldnt desex Razor, I would leave the balance tipped in your household UNLESS he has a testosterone issue. If he has a decent set of testes, started marking trees etc early (like 3-5 months old) then I would say yup, at least try the implant. I have seen testosterone create this over dominant behaviour in dogs predisposed. But saying that old habits die hard and you have a lot of work ahead of you. For everyone else Boss is NOT a puppy anymore. So Razor and him fighting is not an adult attacking a puppy at all, its an entire adult scuffling with an adolescent in the early stages of full sexual maturity. Now as for Boss, he smelled funny, he had pain from his surgery and at least annoyance from his stitches, and he snapped back because probably still felt off. You made minimal effort to prevent Razors harrassment of him so he felt he needed to take matters in his own hands, and Razor being dominant put this young upstart in his place DESPITE the fact he may have started it. As soon as I had seen Razor being a dominant turd mounting him, licking etc I would have separated and put Razor back in his box. You need to get better control over Razor it seems, from the start you had a dog that needed to spend more time under your thumb I dont see a reason to PTS or to assume desexing Razor will make a difference. You need more professional help in areas you may have missed. Meanwhile separate while you are not home and controlled supervised interaction to teach them both what is and is not acceptable behaviour in the house. ETA if they have healed quickly then it was nothing more then a scuffle. You're right, if they really wanted to do damage there would have been more then shallow punture wounds, hell I get scratches, scrapes and holes from my lot just playing.

Possible Hip Dysplasia In Amstaff?
Nekhbet replied to DerRottweiler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
go chiro first, Dr Potter seems to find whatever is wrong with them quick smart with manupulation. I dont bother with scans unless the chiro doesnt work or there is something very very wrong. I'm putting $10 on lower back ETA my Dogue went through this a couple of weeks ago, literally collapsed out of his crate, couldnt walk. Went to a dog chiro and yep, he had done his lower back again which had given him a whopping case of sciatica. My Malinois started yelping that same week, werribee vet clinic said arthritis in her hips ?!?! and medicated her to the eyeballs. The only way this dog could settle was with a hand full of tramadol. Then they said she needs x-rays and anaesthetic at $500 ... dog chiro found she had dislocated her tail, popped it back into place and she was right as rain straight away. -
can you install a dog door?

def go to a chiro. You're in western suburbs, try Potter Chiropractic behind Werribee plaza. He's really good and knows his stuff HD doesnt just suddenly appear like that, sounds like he's done his back and has pressure on the nerves. -
if it's not stopping the behaviour obviously it's not a punisher. He's skittling backwards probably because he learned there is a chance said object will land on your head so he simply avoids potential confrontation with the object. If a dog is persistent then what you perceive as a punisher is not actually a punisher. It could be a mild hindrance but since it does nothing to modify the behaviour you cannot consider it truely a punisher to the dog. Some dogs can take a look, door slams, water, whacks, loud noises etc and not find them emough to change behaviour. Its depends on the individual dog.

any time during the day is good, early morning is better. know anywhere? as long as there are proper warrens on clear land, I wont do junk piles or scrub mess. And no pindone in the area for at least 6 months

ooh yeah great idea Pandii! The ferrets would love an outing too! Have to be sooner then later before snake season and bunny breeding season starts
-
too angry to take photos it didnt go as deep as I thought, it was only on the surface so it blotted out Ams pity I didnt have the camera when the DDB was walking around with a bunny head in his mouth and the ears hanging out today is total prey food day, IE mum went ferreting and there was enough to go round. Quite scary how easily my dogs can chew up a rabbits head O_o fingers ... keep away ...
-
It's drying now I'm trying the bi carb. Thank god there is no smell. I'm giving him death stares and he's trying so hard to act like he has no idea he's done anything wrong ... again ... at least he hasnt pulled the bin apart today

I used to cook up massive pots of rice and veg for the doggies, then just add raw minced carcasses on top. Rice keeps them fuller for longer, raw food is just required in too large a quatity here if I went meat only.
