Vegetable Based Dry And Wet Food
Nekhbet replied to sllebasi's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would only bother with dry Eagle pack has holistic formulas based on one protein source, Royal Canin has exclusive protein formulas based of vege protein you can buy these online -
oh puppies will eat until they pop! It's up to you to monitor input and make sure theyre not getting too much protein or nutrition and end up with problems. You also need to monitor if theyre getting too chubby and cut back the food otherwise they're putting too much weight on growing joints As for kibble, I have raised my dogs on premium kibble (Dogue was on Eagle Pack, others were raised on Royal Canin) adn I'm glad I did. My dogue took a little longer to grow but he's solid, very fit and active for a dog of his build. He;s even been lure coursing and caught the lure! I dont like pure all kibble diet, only my opinion - a base of dry food and then add raw meaty bones in there. At least you know your dog is getting everything he needs but like I said thats just what I recommend :D My dogue had growth issues from a poor diet (collapsed wrists and very flat feet) and this diet fixed him up nicely. As well as his massive skin infection ;) Now out of growing phase they get Royal Canin as a base food, then whatever I have hunted, bought or left over. see he was one heck of an ugly pup

Puppy Missing Critical Socialisation Period
Nekhbet replied to melzawelza's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
He may have been in a glass box but he has been exposed to noise, lots of people, children, being handled etc etc. So technically he's not that unsocialised compared to a alot of animals out there. The one thing I do HATE about pet store pups is that during critical period they are taught to pee and poo right on their beds or next to food. Now that is a long standing habit that sometimes never goes Sounds like he's more just an out of control lunatic that the owner doesn have the skills to handle. As for being fear related how did you come up with that? Was his tail down? Ears back? Hackles up? -
exactly what lovemesideways has said :D. Delta insists on saying their methods are the best, yet NO dog at the pinnacle of training is trained by one of their members with their methods alone ... why? Because they do not have the skills or the tools or the broad mind it takes to do that. And actually corvus, people in society DO need reliable dogs. Especially those who chose to keep large breeds, entire males that may have attitudes etc you want reliability and safety from your dog. Yes I know Steve is PIAA, that gets my goat too. Bad. But at the same time the man is a damn good dog trainer who knows how to motivate an animal and get it working happily. If he can make a chicken play the piano he can do anything

with aggressive dogs or big problems any mistake IS a big deal. And you seem to think that if it doesnt come from a positive trainer it must be harmful to the animal. I dont use alpha rolls or spray bottles on dogs I train, and I'm not a positive trainer. I'm also not an idiot who will cause harm to an animal or further their problems. Once again you give advice on things you know little about yet are happy to insist on. Go Shmoo.
-
GSDC agree with the ANKC's standpoint on schutzhund so I dont see why they would. In fact they refuse to accept any member who does schutzhund, bitework, protection etc with any of their dogs. most working breeders wont be members of the Belgian club, so I'm sending emails out individually and on working K9 forums.
-
because shmoo you're insisting on poo pooing everything and giving advice to people about dificult situations when you have little experience with it. You should be saying 'find a trainer that has experience with aggression and situations like this' not simply 'oh a positive one' - most have little to no idea about how to solve the problem or put a dog back in its rightful place. I think poodiful has probably tried pack modification techniques CM advocates, the alpha roll is actually used quite rarely and only by him if you notice. Leaving things like the DD collars, corrections etc up to a professional are recommended by the show anyway.

And from a trainers point of view, you try what is best for the dog first NOT to suit your ideals. Trainers should aim to fix the dog in the most humane method possible, and what is ultimately good for the dog. and I dont think it's fair to post bad things about people you have never seen train in the flesh, especially things like *shudder* and all that rubbish. I get a bit miffed when people on this forum are more then happy to point fingers and perpetuate garbage about good, decent people who have worked VERY hard in this country, just because they havnt decided to go ride the Delta bandwagon. I would like you to show me one purely positive Delta only accredited person working to train police, military, gov scent detection dogs etc, the animals that help our society. Shmoo you seem to be a little confused on what training is about. As for positive training its basis is on negative punishment (removal of good things and pack punishments) unless you truely sit there and continuously shove rewards at your dog all the time. all training no matter what you use, has to be fun for the dog or it will not work. I can use a corrective collar on a dog and it can still be bursting out of its skin in happyness to be with me. I think you need to get out and see some different training methods before you form opinions.

unless your breeder has prescribed the raw meaty diet I would avoid it for a dogue. Yes raw meaty bones ARE required and healthy BUT you have a growing giant breed that needs quite specific nutrition. BARF diets (such as Dr Lonsdale suggests) are fine IF you have experience in proper nutrition for your breed. I am surprised his website has little in the way of valuable information on proportinos etc. I would err on the side of caution and go Eagle Pack, Nutro, Nutrience, Royal Canin etc giant breed formulas topped up with raw meaty bones. and just to show I'm not a raw poo pooer I prefer to feed whole (intestines out of course) instead of what the butcher chucks out oh he caught this fish himself by the way from one dogue owner to another, welcome!

yup I think we forget when you have a couple of kids or your health isnt good you cant just protest with a tent in a public park or live out bush. I feel sorry that we are pushing animals out of our lives even with rentals. People will be destructive ferals animals or not. Unfortunately to make life easier on themselves many owners and agents dont give a rats and say no pets. Some people have to move in a hurry and cannot find an affordable family rental in time. Our rent has gone up $25 a week in two years, but where are we going to go with our menagerie? Older houses too are now being cleared and turned into brand new units so the traditional old cheapies that allowed everything are dying out too.

that was the original idea sandgrubber. Prey was a US idea from people who had access to fresh roadkill or hunted animals on a regular basis. It recommended leave the animal whole which in essence, decreased the total digestible pure protein in comparison to what some people call 'prey' with butcher bought meats and organs. Fur, feathers etc also increase the fibre content of the gut helping things pass through quite quickly too I can attest to that my lot are getting deer legs for dinner, hoof, hair, bone and all. They got the rib cage yesterday trimmed of most of the meat. I threw a bit of skin for them to play with and eat, rottie devoured half a doe ribcage as well as about a square foot of skin and hair. Thats a prey diet right there.

no technique will be effective if implemented incorrectly. No matter what it is. Limited interaction when you're feeling up to handling it or one in a crate/pen and the other out then swap. You have the luxury of smaller dogs so at least juggling and control can be slightly easier!

OK so from what I can see and my rudimentary french, an associated member is still a member with the FCI but has come to a special agreement with them on some matters (not all, they still have to abide by FCI rules) http://www.showdogs.co.za/hotspot/fci/focu...p_bulletin3.htm
-
I dont see mention anywhere of associate memberships except here from ANKC people. I thought the FCI was all or nothing - hence the ACK, CKC and KC are NOT members but there are special agreements between the two. I think the 'associated' membership is a bit of a myth personally. They're listed as full members of the FCI and are simply trying to get out of it. There is no other kennel club that falls under the 'associated membership' title either.

Shmoo you never use check chains on sight hounds due to their neck structure, if you dont know this glaring fact then maybe you need a freshen up on dog training equipment. And not every dog is of a soft temperament so some need it. here's the difference, I have seen him train. You just seem to have an issue with anyone that dare use anything bar purely positive training irrespective of their true skill level.
-
:p not touching that one ... I think you need professional help with your pack structure in general and to have Elvis assessed. It may even be Ziggy instigating the fights and Elvis simply finishes them! Sometimes we're quick to assume one dog is the problem. PLus who knows if he is truely dog aggressive or just incompatible with ziggy in the current situation. Dont make a decision yet until you have had your home situation checked by a professional, and dont make any rash decisions until you're ready to deal with them

eh where did you hear that? Gotta love second hand information Steve does a lot of work with customs as well as TV dogs. I have met his dogs and a friend trusts him with her own home bred dogs. I think the OP should go have a look around first before listening to rumours, the governments trust steve with training their dogs and even handlers so I dont see why anyone else shouldnt. He thoroughly understands motivation, reward and getting the best out of a dog.

I didnt say raw foods were bad I said prey model diet - based simply on meats, bones and organs. If you read the websites of the newf breeders they feed BARF which has veges in there too. The Omas Pride frozen BARF diet is 20% vegetables and 70-80% ground meat/bone as well as other natural vitaminous additives. If breeders want to do it, that is fine they have the knowledge of their breed. But the average dog owner can get it very wrong quickly and in a giant breed if you are not confident as to the 1) proper rations for your breed and 2) the actual percentages of the constituents of your ingredients you could be getting it wrong to the detriment of the dog. I would never whoel heartedly recommend to anyone to feed a giant breed or even some large breeds on solely raw diets in the growing phase unless you are happy to take the responsibility and are under the guidence of a suitably quilified expert of giant breeds and raw diets. I would rather see a pup be on a natural, premium kibble with some raw added throughout the growing phase.

Possible Hip Dysplasia In Amstaff?
Nekhbet replied to DerRottweiler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
wow aweful lot of money for an airy fairy report like that. He may have not perfect hips but that does not mean he will develop symptoms. It depends on the dog, my dog has virtually no hip sockets and still gets about fine now we've worked out whats right for him. -
ooh are you gonna get smooches! I've sent his medical records with him dognurse Vet recommeded heaps of cuddles as part of his treatment you have to now it's on paper Miss the little guy already he drooled and rolled all over me this morning before he left. Keep in touch I definately want to know how he goes! There will be a lot of people at work asking for updates for this little guy and of course photos are mandatory Being he's such a hunter I think a nice indoor home would be better for him as he has no idea about city life or traffic
-
OK here's rabbit getting heaps of cuddles from my OH! I will put up details ASAP if people want to donate to the rescue that was so kind to take him on!
-
dognurse I pm'd you ... and you will be seeing the little man now dubbed 'rabbit' tomorrow!
-
OK Success! Rescue is taking this cat, he will be at a surgeon in the morning I do need transport from North Geelong to Boronia in the morning as I cant afford to do it myself. I am looking after the cat over night at my place. If you can ring me on my mobile tonight p.s. yes he's free to go wherever
-
yes they are illegal, trust me I am so angry today you have no idea. Everything has been dropped in my lap because I'm the animal person The vet too had her jaw on the ground and is furious about the whole situation My mobile is on all night so please ring me if you have someone who can take him, I cant really afford to drive too far like the other side of melbourne so for some instances he might have to be pick up from my house in North Geelong

Currently a young cat is at the vet after getting his leg caught in an old snap jaw style rabbit trap. His owners wont pay for amputation (or anything at all grrr) so before this cat has to be euthanised I'm putting out the call if any rescue is willing to take him, do the work and adopt him out. He's a ~12 month old male, has not been desexed or vaccinated. He's incredibly friendly, great with kids and is a great mouser/rabbit catcher! He would easily find a new home as he is a total smooch, and even with his leg in a trap he didnt make a fuss or get scared while in the car. Prognosis so far is there is no bone damage, the foot is regaining blood supply but it's damaged to the point it will probably require amputation. Quote is $600-$1000 at Bellarine Vet Clinic here in Geelong. He's incredibly lucky the trap was old and rusty so it didnt do as much damage as it possibly could have. I am taking him home tonight on a drip and meds to try and see if anyone will take him, if not I will have to take him back to the vet for euthanasia in the morning as I myself are completely out of money and he has a high risk of septacemia if left like this for too much longer *********** rescue and transport has now been arranged and ALV will cover costs to get cat to the Vet in Boronia this is one extremely lucky cat I can tell you that
