  1. i'm not back pedalling I'm clarifying. When people invest I assumed you use the money you have or minimise how much money is outgoing on your investment. I simply dont see a lot of logic taking out large morgage on an investment property that you then have to add a lot into. If you add up the bank interest and fees how much will your investment property really end up costing you? Cosmolo your property puts you out of pocket about $5000 a year - take that over say a 20 year loan thats $100,000 assuming your out of pocket stays similar and it is tenanted the entire time. Put $5k every year into a 12 month term deposit account you're looking at well over $200,000 in 20 years at about 6% interest. Now imagine if you put your morgage payments into something like that every year - would it be more then the projected value of your investment property? I dont know it just seems like a bit of a luxury to me when there are other opportunities that dont need repairs, cant be trashed or burned down and dont cost you other things like rates, insurance, agent fees etc. didnt mean to insult anyone I just dont see why the complaining when there are other options. Houses at todays prices are a luxury for the owner occupier let alone investment.
  2. I would say you need to start again. SHe's conditioned now to associate the clicker with food and probably the sight of it will trigger a food response from her. Why dont you try YES as a marker instead?
  3. she's too obsessed. Give her a good feed and start using praise rewards instead.
  4. I said an investment PROPERTY is a luxury item. IE you dont need it to survive. I didnt say investment in general did I? as for houseing affordability, my grandmother managed to own 5 properties simply working in market gardens over the years. She came to Australia with nothing. Couldnt see that happening now unfortunately that house prices are out of proportion to most average wages. and if property prices crash, you have a problem. Have you worked out what you would end up having if you put your morgage + rental money into a term deposit account or something at a reasonable interest rate?
  5. The reason home visits are better for situations like this 1) safety of the dog and owner 2) you can get a true picture of the dogs behaviour in its natural daily environment not an hour a week artificial one that can bring out totally different reactions 3) the behaviourist can assess the living arrangements of the dogs and see what can be done to modify them in a way the owner can cope with At my club we get highly aggressive dogs or problem dogs. Sometimes though I still prefer to go see the dog in its daily environement and take the time to set the foundations properly THEN get them coming to dog school when the owners have some more skills and confidence there is method to my madness lol
  6. not all working breeds are european remember that if you want to recognise working there is also search and rescue, hunting, coursing, retrieving, earthing, herding, tracking, etc I think the concept should embrace the FCI philosophies that make a distinction between what they call 'beauty' tests and working tests and that a dog should achieve in both to be an all round balanced member of the breed.
  7. I think stop worrying so much and most importantly stop weighing the dogs. You end up getting obsessed over numbers. Feel the dogs body, is he losing body fat or muscle? In all probability he's losing some fat with the cold weather. My dogs weight bounces around over the year, my malinois especially. She can get quite thin during winter from all her running about in the rain and cold despite feeding, and stops eating for a day at a time in summer. honestly 700gm could be a few decent poos in a dog too
  8. Just keep offering her bones and raw foods until she eats. Sounds like the princess idea is still sticking in your mind. If she's not hungry then she's not hungry, no food or snacks until she eats whats offered to her. Fibre is fine but raw diet boney poos are the best at anal gland expressing
  9. I am assuming this rule goes further then schutzhund - to includ KNVP, belgian, french, mondio ring titles as well? My malinois has KVNP in her lines (with her grandfather achieving the met lof) - as do many mals - how will that affect them? I assume poorly as well. Remember not all breeders are members of their breed club and not every breed affected by this has a strong club to represent its interests. Not every working breeder does a protection sport either, some go straight into work such as PP, military, police, etc so they are not necessarily in with the sport dog crowd. The Belgian Malinois wouldnt, the dutch shepherd is still in its infancy here. Is the ANKC sending out a letter and providing an opportunity for all breeders to respond? I am astounded that many working dog breeders and trainers were the LAST to know about this. Such earth shaking news should have been sent out as an official email/letter. This is the KNVP (Royal Dutch Policedog Test) someone explain to me how something like this is 'useless' and 'uneccesary'. In fact we should be begging more dogs and trainers like these to come down here. We are starving of decent quality animals in this country. Being so isolated we already have a barrier in sharing genetics and then the ANKC goes and slaps the face of breeders around the world with this crap. I would join a full FCI member association in a heartbeat.
  10. you need to ask the council before bringing a club to one of their grounds. For insurance as well as safety/noise/usage issues. Write them a letter ASAP.
  11. oh my god. Are people purposely putting dangerous information up or is this a joke? The dog has issues that needs a qualified behaviourist NOT a dog club. From what I can try and gleam seems like the previous advice has increased the behaviour and the e-collar use is ill timed and at the wrong stimulus level. The household dynamics have also not been addressed hence the dogs reacting the way they do. Big difference between TRAINING and BEHAVIOURAL TRAINING. If the dogs need exercise, get an old treadmill and run them on that out in the garage or some other room. One dog at a time in the room. Wear them out that way at least its safe and will poop them out well and truely. Separation until you can afford to fix the problem, yes. In the meantime the only reading I would be providing is www.leerburg.com, do not IMPLEMENT simply read up on dog behaviour and dominant/aggressive dogs. It also has advice on dog fights, separation etc.
  12. ahh i'm such a sucker ... I just ordered 2 much easier then the metal ones which I can now use for the car and training instead of in the house (total PITA when I try and move those massive things to vaccuum!
  13. I prefer to use the horse supplements (which are also for dogs) like the troy Behave paste and other similar products. Vitamin B, camomile etc nothing bad in there
  14. sniffer dogs will be working for something, just the reward comes after the detection. Rewards dont have to be shown to the dog all the time, they become conditioned to receive reward when the job is done. Eg a sniffer dog handler will have a toy in their pocket and when the dog responds to a scent the toy is thrown in front of the dog to make it look like it comes from the scent article
  15. ok this whole thing has gotten confused totally because people have boundaries on their perception of what dog training is about. It doesnt matter what animal you train for what purpose. A good trainer is one that can - understand the drives of that particular dog - tailor a system that works for that dogs temperament and behaviour - implement it in a consistant and fair manner so the dogs learning and performance is maximised Point is here not what specific methods a police dog trainer uses. Even what is suitable between K9s there will be differences because every dog is an individual. The point is someone who can train a dog to that level of performance, who can read dogs that well is someone that would be able to read and train your dogs better then someone with a lower level of training experience. I hope that is clearer. exactly. again - exactly. All training no matter what HAS to have an elemet of motivation or the dog just WONT DO IT. You cannot simply force a dog to behave in a certain way and to do it happily if there is no element of reward for the animal.
  16. trust me I have no intention on giving up or backing down on this one especially thats the scary part
  17. yes it is a dream. I know what you're getting and and I agree, it is a free country. It just 'looks' a little better when the official organisation comes out with it instead of individuals trying to band together to save it. As for disqualification that would just be from the club [if they so saw it to be a reason to do so] as they dont want their members supposedly 'encouraged' by inaction silly isnt it.
  18. staranais http://www.gsdcv.org.au/FAQs then in the little drop down box pick 'training' category and the question about Schutzhund comes up in a pop up box
  19. from the WA website ... at least they're not as rabid about it as some others are. ETA I dont mean in the past Tapferhund, I meant now. The GSDCA says members cannot do schutzhund so obviously things are going on outside the rules there too. It's just one big cock up really, everything is everywhere at the moment
  20. from GSDCV and from GSDCA GSDCA affiliate clubs are (apparently) GSDCV GSD League NSW GSD Assoc WA GSDCSA GSDCQ GSDCT GSDCNT ACTGSD Association Newcastle and Hunter Region GSDC Broken Hill GSDC
  21. an investment property is a massive luxury item. It also comes with costs that shouldnt outweight the rent that is paid (otherwise they're pretty much not worth owning) but thats part and parcel of getting thousands of dollars a year from tenants. Whinging you're out of pocket on an investment property is like complaining your ferrarri needs new wheels that are gonna cost soooo much. Problem is too that so many people are willing to buy investment properties as stupid prices and then slog the renters with the morgage increase they cant afford. If we stopped paying massive prices for houses they wouldnt be that expensive and more people would be out of rentals and back into houses they can actually afford.
  22. my dogue was the same a few weeks ago, turned out he had put his back out when he went to sleep and got a massive case of sciatica and fluid build up in the lower back. He couldnt walk, was crying and wobbling. Chiro fixed it for $10. Check for stomach and lower back pain ASAP he sounds like he's done something to his leg or back.
  23. actually that sounds like one or two good F off nips from a terrier, not a mauling at all.
  24. he;s a working breed and he's focussed all his drive on chasing the hose ;) If it was anxiety you would see he would be backing away from it showing very nervous signals. He's just having fun with it. The thing to decide is if you want to accept it or not - ie how much can you tolerate the noise and possible destruction
